India Rebukes NYT Headline on PoJK, Says There Is No ‘Pakistani Kashmir’; Reaffirms Territory Is an Integral Part of India
Washington/New Delhi: India has strongly objected to the terminology used in a report published by a leading American newspaper, asserting that the expression “Pakistani Kashmir” is factually incorrect.
The Indian Embassy in the United States said on Wednesday that the description used in the headline was misleading and reiterated India’s long-standing position on the status of the region.
The objection came after The New York Times carried a report on recent violence in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), using the phrase “Pakistani Kashmir” in its headline.
Responding publicly, the Embassy said there is no entity by that name and stressed that the correct description is Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK).
Reaffirming India’s official stand, the Embassy stated that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, including the areas presently under Pakistan’s control, have always been and will continue to remain an integral and inalienable part of India.
The mission further alleged that Pakistan continues to occupy portions of Indian territory illegally and is using force against people living in those occupied areas.
According to The New York Times report, which cited local officials and independent assessments, at least 30 people—including protesters, members of the security forces and civilians—have lost their lives in clashes reported since early June, including the latest violence that erupted earlier this week.
The report also referred to the ongoing agitation led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a coalition of activist groups that has been staging demonstrations across PoJK since last month.
The organisation has been protesting over 12 disputed seats in the region’s legislative assembly, alleging that the electoral process is manipulated to facilitate the installation of a government favoured by the establishment.
India has previously maintained that the continuing unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir reflects deep public resentment over what it describes as Pakistan’s economic exploitation of the region, denial of fundamental rights and oppressive administrative practices.

वाशिंगटन/नई दिल्ली: संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका में भारतीय दूतावास ने एक प्रमुख अमेरिकी समाचार पत्र में प्रकाशित रिपोर्ट के शीर्षक पर कड़ी आपत्ति जताते हुए कहा है कि “पाकिस्तानी कश्मीर” जैसी कोई इकाई अस्तित्व में नहीं है।
दूतावास ने बुधवार को स्पष्ट किया कि इस तरह की शब्दावली भ्रामक और तथ्यात्मक रूप से गलत है तथा भारत का रुख इस मुद्दे पर पूरी तरह स्पष्ट और अपरिवर्तित है।
यह प्रतिक्रिया द न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स में प्रकाशित उस समाचार के बाद आई, जिसमें पाकिस्तान के कब्जे वाले जम्मू-कश्मीर (पीओजेके) में हालिया हिंसक घटनाओं का उल्लेख करते हुए शीर्षक में “पाकिस्तानी कश्मीर” शब्द का इस्तेमाल किया गया था।
भारतीय दूतावास ने कहा कि क्षेत्र का सही उल्लेख “पाकिस्तान के कब्जे वाला कश्मीर (पीओजेके)” है और किसी अन्य नामकरण का कोई तथ्यात्मक आधार नहीं है।
दूतावास ने दोहराया कि जम्मू-कश्मीर और लद्दाख के संपूर्ण केंद्र शासित प्रदेश, जिनमें पाकिस्तान के अवैध कब्जे वाले क्षेत्र भी शामिल हैं, भारत के अभिन्न और अविभाज्य हिस्से हैं तथा भविष्य में भी बने रहेंगे।
भारतीय मिशन ने यह भी कहा कि पाकिस्तान भारतीय क्षेत्र के कुछ हिस्सों पर अवैध रूप से कब्जा किए हुए है और वहां रहने वाले लोगों के खिलाफ बल प्रयोग कर रहा है।
द न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स की रिपोर्ट में स्थानीय अधिकारियों और स्वतंत्र आकलनों का हवाला देते हुए कहा गया है कि जून की शुरुआत से लेकर इस सप्ताह हुई ताजा हिंसा तक कम से कम 30 लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है।
मृतकों में प्रदर्शनकारी, कानून-व्यवस्था से जुड़े कर्मी और आम नागरिक शामिल बताए गए हैं।
रिपोर्ट में संयुक्त अवामी एक्शन कमेटी (जेएएसी) के नेतृत्व में चल रहे आंदोलन का भी उल्लेख किया गया है। विभिन्न सामाजिक संगठनों के इस समूह ने पिछले महीने से पीओजेके में तथाकथित क्षेत्रीय विधानसभा की 12 विवादित सीटों को लेकर प्रदर्शन शुरू कर रखा है।
समिति का आरोप है कि इन सीटों के माध्यम से सत्ता प्रतिष्ठान अपनी पसंद की सरकार स्थापित करने के लिए चुनावी प्रक्रिया को प्रभावित करता है।
भारत पहले भी कह चुका है कि पाकिस्तान के कब्जे वाले कश्मीर में जारी व्यापक विरोध प्रदर्शन वहां के लोगों में बढ़ते असंतोष का परिणाम हैं। भारत का कहना है कि आर्थिक शोषण, मूलभूत अधिकारों से वंचित किए जाने और दमनकारी प्रशासनिक व्यवस्था ने क्षेत्र में जनाक्रोश को जन्म दिया है।
