India Revives Kargil War Episode at UN, Challenges Pakistan’s Claims on Religious Rights
India has brought a little-known but pointed episode from the 1999 Kargil conflict into the latest diplomatic confrontation with Pakistan at the United Nations, questioning Islamabad’s authority to speak on religious rights and burial practices.
In its response on Friday, Indian diplomat Bhavika Mangalanandan recalled how Indian soldiers buried Pakistani troops killed during the conflict, arguing that they were accorded dignity and respect despite Pakistan’s alleged refusal to acknowledge the dead as its own servicemen.
Mangalanandan said the Indian Army had conducted the burials with military honours and in keeping with Islamic traditions.
She used the episode to challenge Pakistan’s statements on faith and religious freedom, highlighting what India described as a contradiction between Islamabad’s public position and its conduct during the Kargil War.
The Indian representative also turned the focus to Jammu and Kashmir, saying Pakistan should concentrate on conditions in the territory under its control rather than repeatedly commenting on the Indian Union Territory.
India maintains that parts of the region remain under Pakistan’s illegal occupation.
Jammu and Kashmir remains a flashpoint at the UN
The exchange is part of a continuing diplomatic dispute in which India has frequently accused Pakistan of using United Nations forums to raise what New Delhi describes as misleading allegations about Jammu and Kashmir.
A similar objection was voiced last week in the UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee, where Lok Sabha member Mahima Kumari Mewar represented India.
She criticised Pakistan for repeatedly bringing claims about Jammu and Kashmir before the international body, alleging that its statements misrepresented the situation.
Mewar also accused Pakistani forces and groups allegedly acting with their backing of killing dozens of civilians in recent months. She said the victims had been demanding basic rights, freedoms and essential services.
India questions Islamabad’s right to lecture others
New Delhi has broadened its criticism beyond Kashmir, pointing to Pakistan’s history of military-led governments, concerns over the credibility of elections and allegations of state support for terrorism.
India has argued that Pakistan’s own political and security record sits uneasily with its attempts to lecture other countries on democratic values and human rights.
The latest exchange highlights how the two neighbours continue to use international platforms to challenge each other’s positions.
For India, Pakistan’s statements on Jammu and Kashmir remain unacceptable interference in a territory New Delhi considers an integral part of the country.
