India Signals Readiness for a Role in Ukraine Peace Efforts, Jaishankar Says in Kyiv
S Jaishankar says India is willing to contribute to efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war as he discusses peace, Black Sea shipping and Indian seafarer safety in Kyiv.
Black Sea security and the safety of Indian seafarers figure prominently in talks as New Delhi backs dialogue over continued hostilities
KYIV: India has left the door open to a more direct role in efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar saying New Delhi would step in if its involvement could contribute to peace.
Jaishankar made the remarks during his Kyiv visit on Thursday while appearing alongside Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
His comments underline India’s continued preference for diplomacy as the means of addressing a war that has persisted despite repeated international efforts to bring the fighting to an end.
The conversation between the two ministers also moved beyond the battlefield to the Black Sea, where military activity has created risks for commercial maritime traffic.
Attacks involving shipping in the region were among the issues discussed by the Indian and Ukrainian sides.
For New Delhi, the maritime dimension has a direct human cost.
Recent violence in the Black Sea has resulted in the deaths of Indian seafarers and injuries to others, adding the safety of Indian nationals to India’s concerns over the expanding consequences of the conflict.
The latest diplomatic engagement therefore carries significance beyond the bilateral relationship between India and Ukraine.
The two countries are also assessing developments in a conflict whose effects extend to shipping, civilian safety and international commerce.
Jaishankar’s Kyiv programme includes discussions with Sybiha on bilateral ties and wider regional developments.
His European outreach also includes talks with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.
The ministry has described the trip as an opportunity to deepen relations with Ukraine while exchanging views on developments in the region and subjects on which the two countries have common interests.
India has maintained that the conflict ultimately needs to be addressed through negotiations rather than military escalation.
That position has assumed renewed relevance as fighting continues to create risks well beyond the immediate areas of combat.
The government’s concern over Indian seafarers has further sharpened its call for restraint.
Ensuring that commercial vessels and their crews can operate safely has become an important part of New Delhi’s engagement with the evolving situation in the Black Sea.
Against this backdrop, Jaishankar’s statement in Kyiv amounts to an indication that India is willing to contribute beyond diplomatic messaging if there is a meaningful opportunity to do so.
While he did not announce a specific mediation initiative, his remarks make clear that New Delhi is prepared to assist in whatever constructive capacity may prove useful.
The visit consequently combines two strands of India’s approach to the war: protecting its immediate national interests, including the safety of its citizens, while continuing to advocate dialogue and diplomacy as the route towards a lasting settlement.
