India’s Archery Golden Day: Women’s Recurve Team Stuns South Korea; Chikitha’s Family Sacrifice Pays Off
Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod end South Korea’s long reign in women’s recurve, while Chikitha Taniparthi’s double-gold debut highlights a remarkable journey from a Telangana village to Asian Games glory.
AICHI-NAGOYA: Indian archery produced a day to remember at the 2026 Asian Games, with the women’s recurve trio ending South Korea’s long-standing dominance before Chikitha Taniparthi’s remarkable double-gold campaign added another compelling chapter to the country’s success.
Ankita Bhakat, Kirti Sharma and Kumkum Mohod held their nerve in difficult conditions to defeat South Korea 5-3 in the women’s recurve team final on Friday.
The victory delivered India its first Asian Games gold in the event and ended a Korean winning run that had stretched across seven editions since 1998.
The result was significant beyond the medal itself.
India had never previously reached the final of the women’s team recurve competition at the Asian Games. The three-member squad therefore entered the record books by breaking through a barrier that had stood for decades.
A final decided by composure
The gold-medal contest was remarkably close, with neither side able to establish a commanding advantage early on.
The opening two sets were shared, leaving the match finely balanced. With gusty conditions making precision more difficult, the Indian archers stayed within touching distance of their highly decorated opponents.
The turning point arrived in the third set. South Korea’s Kang Chaeyoung, Oh Yejin and Lee Yunji struggled to maintain their earlier accuracy and collectively posted 52 points.
India responded with 55 to move ahead and put the Korean trio under pressure.
The final set became a test of nerve. Korea finished on 54, and India initially appeared to have matched that score after Kirti’s opening arrow was assessed.
A review subsequently upgraded the shot from an 8 to a 9, taking India’s total to 54 and leaving the set tied.
That was enough.
With the overall set-point advantage already in India’s favour, the drawn fourth set confirmed the historic 5-3 victory and sent the Indian trio into celebration.
The triumph came after India had swept aside China 5-1 in the semifinal, earning a place in the Asian Games final for the first time.
The achievement also represented a step up from the bronze won by India’s women’s recurve team at the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
South Korea’s long reign finally broken.
South Korea has traditionally been the benchmark in women’s recurve archery. The country’s team had won the Asian Games title at every edition since 1998, collecting seven successive gold medals before Friday’s defeat.
India’s breakthrough therefore came against one of the most established forces in the discipline.
The victory has been described as a major shift in the Asian archery landscape, particularly because India had previously not even appeared in the final of this event.
The Indian performance was built not only on scoring ability but also on resisting pressure when the margin for error became extremely small.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Bhakat, Mohod and Sharma, saying their precision and composure in a closely fought final had produced India’s first-ever gold in the women’s recurve team event.
Chikitha’s golden journey began far from the Asian Games spotlight
India’s archery success at the Games had already received another remarkable boost through Chikitha Taniparthi, who won two gold medals in compound archery on her Asian Games debut.
The 21-year-old from Sultanpur village in Telangana’s Peddapalli district first helped India win the women’s compound team title alongside Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Prithika Pradeep.
She later partnered Sahil Jadhav to victory in the mixed team competition against South Korea.
The mixed-team victory had an additional significance: India’s success secured an Olympic quota for the Los Angeles 2028 Games, where compound archery is set to make its Olympic debut.
Behind those medals, however, lies a story that began with a father determined to give his daughter an opportunity that he had never received himself.
From karate to a bow and arrow
Archery was not Chikitha’s first sporting ambition. As a schoolgirl, she trained in karate and eventually earned a black belt. Her father, Srinivas Rao, encouraged his children to take up sport and wanted his daughter to pursue an individual discipline.
The turning point came during a Dussehra holiday when Chikitha began experimenting with a simple bow brought by her uncle. What started as backyard recreation gradually developed into a serious sporting pursuit.
Chikitha has recalled that she did not initially choose archery herself. Her father decided after encouraging her to explore sport, influenced in part by the success of Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal.
The family’s financial circumstances, however, made the journey anything but easy.
Rao, a small farmer, invested heavily in his daughter’s development. Reports say the family lost around ₹1.5 lakh in an unsuccessful attempt to acquire her first proper compound bow.
He subsequently borrowed about ₹3.5 lakh and eventually sold a rice harvester to finance better equipment and training.
The family also created makeshift training arrangements close to home while searching for better facilities.
Rao travelled with his daughter to nearby towns for coaching before their efforts eventually brought them into contact with established archery circles and coach Abhishek Verma.
Chikitha was later selected for training at the Sports Authority of India centre in Sonipat, an opportunity that helped take her preparation to a more professional level.
From a village range to international success
The youngster’s progress accelerated after she committed herself to compound archery. She eventually made her international mark at the 2025 World Archery Youth Championships in Winnipeg.
Her rise has not been entirely smooth. After achieving major success, Chikitha has spoken about the pressure of trying to reproduce performances at the highest level and the difficulties she encountered with her shooting.
Rather than allowing those setbacks to define her season, she focused on controlling what she could, rebuilding confidence and returning to competition with a clearer approach.
Meditation and breathing exercises also became part of her routine. Chikitha has said that practising them regularly helps her maintain composure and trust the process during the intense concentration required in archery.
That mental discipline was on display in the Asian Games mixed-team final. With India and South Korea tied after regulation, the contest went to a shoot-off.
Chikitha and Jadhav both delivered 10s, while a Korean final arrow fell short of the required mark, handing India the gold.
Two different journeys, one golden day
The stories of the recurve trio and Chikitha Taniparthi unfolded differently, but they converged on the same Asian Games stage.
Bhakat, Sharma and Mohod broke a decades-old Korean monopoly in women’s recurve. Chikitha, meanwhile, transformed years of family investment, sacrifice and personal perseverance into two compound archery gold medals.
Together, their performances have underlined the growing depth of Indian archery at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games—and produced one of the most memorable stretches of the country’s campaign.
