Iran Accuses Ukraine of Deadly Attack on Merchant Ship in Caspian Sea as Regional Tensions Deepen
A sharp escalation in regional tensions unfolded on Saturday after Iran accused Ukraine of launching a deadly strike on one of its merchant vessels in the Caspian Sea, leaving a sailor dead and another injured.
Tehran warned that the attack would not go unanswered, raising concerns that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine could widen further by drawing additional countries into the confrontation.
The allegation came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that Kyiv had carried out long-range operations in the Caspian Sea against vessels allegedly transporting military cargo connected to Iran.
His remarks underscored the increasingly international dimensions of the war, with strategic maritime routes and foreign partners becoming more deeply involved in the conflict.
According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the strike occurred on Saturday morning and triggered a powerful explosion aboard the merchant vessel.
The ministry, quoted by the official IRNA news agency, said one crew member lost his life while another sustained injuries.
Tehran reiterated that it has not taken sides in the Russia-Ukraine war and has remained outside the military conflict.
Responding swiftly to the incident, Iranian authorities summoned Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires in Tehran to lodge a formal diplomatic protest over what they described as a “hostile and criminal act.”
State media reported that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also discussed the matter with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, urging both the European Union and the United Nations Security Council to take a firm stand over the alleged attack.
The Caspian Sea occupies immense strategic importance for both Russia and Iran, two of its five littoral states.
With Russia maintaining a significant naval presence in the region, the waterway serves as a crucial military and commercial corridor linking Russian territory with Iran while extending Moscow’s long-range operational capabilities.
At the same time, President Zelenskyy accused Russia of supplying Iran with satellite imagery from the Middle East to assist in directing military strikes in that region.
In a post on X, he said Ukrainian forces had achieved “very strong results” through long-range operations conducted in the Caspian Sea, signalling Kyiv’s growing capability to strike targets far from the front lines.
Elsewhere in the conflict, authorities installed by Russia in the occupied part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region claimed that a drone attack on a holiday camp killed 12 people, including five children.
The Russian-backed administration accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately targeting civilians. Ukraine had not issued any official response to the allegation at the time of reporting.
Fresh hostilities also reached the Ukrainian capital early Sunday when Russian missile attacks triggered air raid alerts across Kyiv.
Falling debris from intercepted projectiles reportedly ignited fires in at least three districts of the city. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one blaze broke out on the seventh and eighth floors of a residential building in the city centre.
Although emergency services responded quickly, there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Ukraine’s Air Force said ballistic missiles had been launched toward the capital before the alert was lifted roughly 50 minutes later.
Amid the continuing violence, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed cautious optimism about prospects for diplomacy.
Speaking on Saturday, he suggested that negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv could resume if both sides agreed to freeze the conflict and return to the negotiating table in search of a peaceful settlement.

ईरान के विदेश मंत्रालय ने आधिकारिक समाचार एजेंसी आईआरएनए के हवाले से बताया कि शनिवार सुबह हुए हमले के बाद जहाज में भीषण विस्फोट हुआ। मंत्रालय के अनुसार इस घटना में एक चालक दल के सदस्य की मौत हो गई, जबकि दूसरा घायल हो गया।
तेहरान ने दोहराया कि उसने रूस और यूक्रेन के बीच चल रहे युद्ध में किसी भी पक्ष का समर्थन नहीं किया है और वह इस संघर्ष से पूरी तरह अलग रहा है।
घटना के बाद ईरान सरकार ने तेहरान स्थित यूक्रेन के कार्यवाहक राजदूत (चार्जे द’अफेयर्स) को तलब कर औपचारिक विरोध दर्ज कराया। ईरानी अधिकारियों ने इस कार्रवाई को “शत्रुतापूर्ण और आपराधिक कृत्य” करार दिया।
सरकारी मीडिया के अनुसार विदेश मंत्री अब्बास अराघची ने यूरोपीय संघ की विदेश नीति प्रमुख काजा कैलास से भी बातचीत की और यूरोपीय संघ तथा संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद से इस मामले में सख्त रुख अपनाने की अपील की।
कैस्पियन सागर रूस और ईरान सहित पांच देशों से घिरा हुआ है और यह क्षेत्र सामरिक दृष्टि से अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण माना जाता है।
रूस की मजबूत नौसैनिक मौजूदगी के कारण यह समुद्री मार्ग सैन्य गतिविधियों, व्यापारिक आवागमन और ईरान के साथ रणनीतिक संपर्क का महत्वपूर्ण केंद्र बना हुआ है।
इसी बीच राष्ट्रपति ज़ेलेंस्की ने रूस पर एक और गंभीर आरोप लगाया। उन्होंने कहा कि मॉस्को मध्य-पूर्व से प्राप्त उपग्रह चित्र ईरान के साथ साझा कर रहा है ताकि वहां सैन्य अभियानों को दिशा देने में मदद मिल सके।
सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर उन्होंने लिखा कि यूक्रेन ने कैस्पियन सागर में लंबी दूरी तक की गई सैन्य कार्रवाइयों में “बेहद महत्वपूर्ण सफलता” हासिल की है।
युद्ध के दूसरे मोर्चे पर रूस के कब्जे वाले यूक्रेन के जापोरिज्जिया क्षेत्र में एक अवकाश शिविर पर ड्रोन हमले में 12 लोगों की मौत हो गई, जिनमें पांच बच्चे भी शामिल थे।
रूस समर्थित स्थानीय प्रशासन ने इस हमले के लिए यूक्रेन को जिम्मेदार ठहराते हुए आरोप लगाया कि नागरिकों को जानबूझकर निशाना बनाया गया। समाचार लिखे जाने तक इस दावे पर कीव की ओर से कोई आधिकारिक प्रतिक्रिया नहीं आई थी।
रविवार तड़के यूक्रेन की राजधानी कीव भी रूसी हमलों की चपेट में आ गई।
बैलिस्टिक मिसाइलों के खतरे के बीच पूरे शहर में हवाई हमले की चेतावनी जारी की गई। अवरोधित मिसाइलों के मलबे से शहर के कम से कम तीन इलाकों में आग लग गई।
महापौर विताली क्लिट्स्को ने बताया कि शहर के मध्य क्षेत्र में स्थित एक बहुमंजिला इमारत की सातवीं और आठवीं मंजिल पर आग भड़क उठी। हालांकि तत्काल किसी जनहानि की सूचना नहीं मिली और लगभग 50 मिनट बाद हवाई हमले की चेतावनी समाप्त कर दी गई।
लगातार बढ़ते सैन्य तनाव के बीच कज़ाखस्तान के राष्ट्रपति कासिम-जोमार्ट तोकायेव ने कूटनीतिक समाधान की संभावना जताई।
उन्होंने कहा कि यदि रूस और यूक्रेन युद्धविराम पर सहमत होकर संघर्ष को स्थिर करें और पुनः वार्ता शुरू करें, तो दोनों देशों के बीच शांति समझौते की दिशा में सार्थक प्रगति संभव हो सकती है।
