Sarnath Earns UNESCO World Heritage Status After 28-Year Wait, Becomes India’s 45th Heritage Site.
Nearly three decades after it was placed on UNESCO’s Tentative List, the ancient Buddhist centre of Sarnath has secured a coveted place on the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking a landmark moment for India’s cultural legacy.
Revered as the place where Lord Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, Sarnath has now become the country’s 45th UNESCO World Heritage Site and the fourth such monument from Uttar Pradesh.
Reacting to the announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the development as a moment of immense pride for the nation.
In a message posted on X, he said Sarnath’s inclusion on the prestigious global list honours India’s rich civilisational and spiritual traditions.
The Prime Minister noted that Lord Buddha’s timeless teachings of wisdom, compassion and harmony continue to guide humanity and expressed hope that the recognition would inspire visitors from across the world to experience Sarnath and embrace the values associated with Buddhism.
The decision was taken during the 48th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, elevating one of Buddhism’s most sacred pilgrimage destinations to the highest level of international heritage recognition.
According to an official government statement, the inscription is expected to significantly strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s Buddhist tourism circuit while enhancing India’s standing as a global centre of Buddhist heritage.
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat also welcomed the announcement, calling it a defining milestone in the preservation of India’s cultural inheritance.
In a post on X, he said Sarnath symbolises peace, knowledge and compassion and stands as a testament to the enduring philosophical and spiritual contributions of Indian civilisation.
He remarked that UNESCO’s recognition reinforces India’s historic role as a source of ideas and values that have inspired generations across the world.
Uttar Pradesh Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said the inscription reflected the state’s sustained efforts to preserve and promote its diverse civilisational heritage on the global stage.
He observed that Uttar Pradesh is home to an extraordinary blend of spiritual traditions, ranging from the legacy of Lord Buddha and the Ramayana to Jain and Sufi heritage.
According to him, both the Central and State governments have consistently worked towards conserving and developing sites associated with different faiths with equal dedication.
Describing the development as a historic achievement, the minister said Sarnath’s recognition after a wait of 28 years would significantly enhance the international profile of Uttar Pradesh’s Buddhist Circuit.
He added that the honour would further strengthen the state’s image as a destination representing peace, spirituality and cultural inclusiveness while attracting a much wider global audience.
Conservation architect Abha Narain Lambah, who prepared the nomination dossier for UNESCO, said Sarnath occupies a unique position in the history of Buddhism.
She explained that the site represents the location of Lord Buddha’s First Sermon, the birth of the Buddhist Sangha, some of the earliest examples of Buddhist architecture and an uninterrupted pilgrimage tradition spanning nearly 2,500 years.
According to her, this rare combination gives Sarnath exceptional universal value.
Additional Chief Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Religious Affairs, Amrit Abhijat, said the UNESCO inscription was the result of sustained efforts to present Uttar Pradesh’s heritage destinations before an international audience.
He noted that Sarnath has remained the cornerstone of the state’s strategy to establish Uttar Pradesh as the heartland of Buddhist pilgrimage through global tourism promotion, familiarisation tours, engagement with the travel industry, Buddhist festivals and continuous improvement of visitor facilities.
Highlighting the state’s growing international recognition, Abhijat pointed out that Lucknow’s inclusion in UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network as a Creative City of Gastronomy in October 2025 had already showcased another dimension of Uttar Pradesh’s cultural richness.
He expressed confidence that Sarnath’s World Heritage status would substantially increase international tourist arrivals, encourage visitors to spend more time exploring the state,e and provide fresh momentum to the entire Buddhist Circuit.

लगभग तीन दशक के लंबे इंतजार के बाद भगवान बुद्ध की प्रथम धर्मदेशना स्थली सारनाथ को यूनेस्को की विश्व धरोहर सूची में शामिल कर लिया गया है।
इस ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि के साथ सारनाथ भारत का 45वां तथा उत्तर प्रदेश का चौथा यूनेस्को विश्व धरोहर स्थल बन गया है।
बौद्ध धर्म के सबसे पवित्र तीर्थस्थलों में शामिल सारनाथ को यह सम्मान 28 वर्षों तक यूनेस्को की अस्थायी सूची में रहने के बाद प्राप्त हुआ है।
इस उपलब्धि पर प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने प्रसन्नता व्यक्त करते हुए इसे प्रत्येक भारतीय के लिए गर्व का क्षण बताया।

प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि भगवान बुद्ध का ज्ञान, करुणा और सद्भाव का संदेश आज भी पूरी मानवता का मार्गदर्शन कर रहा है तथा इस मान्यता से दुनिया भर के अधिक लोग सारनाथ आएंगे और बुद्ध के आदर्शों से जुड़ने के लिए प्रेरित होंगे।
यूनेस्को की विश्व धरोहर समिति के 48वें सत्र में लिया गया यह निर्णय बौद्ध धर्म के इस पवित्र स्थल को अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर सर्वोच्च विरासत सम्मान प्रदान करता है।
सरकार की ओर से जारी विज्ञप्ति में कहा गया कि इस मान्यता से उत्तर प्रदेश के बौद्ध पर्यटन परिपथ को नई वैश्विक पहचान मिलेगी और भारत की बौद्ध विरासत को अंतरराष्ट्रीय मंच पर और अधिक मजबूती मिलेगी।
केंद्रीय संस्कृति मंत्री गजेंद्र सिंह शेखावत ने भी इस उपलब्धि को भारत की सांस्कृतिक विरासत के लिए ऐतिहासिक क्षण बताया।
उन्होंने कहा कि सारनाथ शांति, ज्ञान और करुणा का शाश्वत प्रतीक है तथा भारतीय सभ्यता द्वारा विश्व को दिए गए आध्यात्मिक और दार्शनिक योगदान का सजीव प्रमाण है।
उनके अनुसार यूनेस्को की यह मान्यता भारत की उस ऐतिहासिक भूमिका की पुनर्पुष्टि करती है, जिसने सदियों से पूरी दुनिया को विचार और मूल्यों की दिशा दिखाई है।
उत्तर प्रदेश के संस्कृति मंत्री जयवीर सिंह ने कहा कि यह उपलब्धि राज्य की विविध सांस्कृतिक और आध्यात्मिक विरासत को राष्ट्रीय तथा वैश्विक स्तर पर स्थापित करने के निरंतर प्रयासों का परिणाम है।
उन्होंने कहा कि भगवान बुद्ध की भूमि से लेकर रामायण, जैन और सूफी परंपराओं तक उत्तर प्रदेश असाधारण सांस्कृतिक विरासत का धनी है।
प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ के नेतृत्व में सरकार ने सभी धर्मों और परंपराओं से जुड़े विरासत स्थलों के संरक्षण और विकास को समान प्राथमिकता दी है।
जयवीर सिंह ने कहा कि 28 वर्षों के लंबे इंतजार के बाद मिली यह मान्यता उत्तर प्रदेश के लिए ऐतिहासिक उपलब्धि है।
उनका कहना था कि इससे राज्य के बौद्ध पर्यटन परिपथ को वैश्विक स्तर पर नई गति मिलेगी और उत्तर प्रदेश शांति, अध्यात्म तथा सांस्कृतिक समरसता के संदेश को दुनिया के व्यापक समुदाय तक पहुंचाने में और अधिक सक्षम होगा।
सारनाथ के लिए यूनेस्को नामांकन प्रस्ताव तैयार करने वाली संरक्षण वास्तु विशेषज्ञ आभा नारायण लांबा ने कहा कि यह स्थल बौद्ध इतिहास में अद्वितीय स्थान रखता है।
उन्होंने बताया कि यहीं भगवान बुद्ध ने अपना प्रथम उपदेश दिया था, यहीं से बौद्ध संघ की स्थापना हुई और यहां बौद्ध स्थापत्य कला के प्रारंभिक स्वरूपों के साथ लगभग ढाई हजार वर्षों से चली आ रही तीर्थयात्रा की परंपरा आज भी जीवित है।
उनके अनुसार यही विशेषताएं सारनाथ को विश्व धरोहर के रूप में असाधारण महत्व प्रदान करती हैं।
पर्यटन, संस्कृति एवं धर्मार्थ कार्य विभाग के अपर मुख्य सचिव अमृत अभिजात ने कहा कि यह सम्मान उत्तर प्रदेश की विरासत को वैश्विक पर्यटन मानचित्र पर स्थापित करने के निरंतर प्रयासों का परिणाम है।
उन्होंने बताया कि सारनाथ को बौद्ध तीर्थयात्रा के वैश्विक केंद्र के रूप में विकसित करने के लिए अंतरराष्ट्रीय पर्यटन मंचों पर विशेष प्रचार, विदेशी प्रतिनिधिमंडलों के भ्रमण, ट्रैवल ट्रेड सहभागिता, बौद्ध महोत्सवों के आयोजन तथा पर्यटक सुविधाओं के निरंतर विस्तार पर विशेष ध्यान दिया गया है।
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि अक्टूबर 2025 में लखनऊ को यूनेस्को की क्रिएटिव सिटीज़ नेटवर्क में क्रिएटिव सिटी ऑफ गैस्ट्रोनॉमी का दर्जा मिलने से उत्तर प्रदेश की सांस्कृतिक पहचान को पहले ही वैश्विक मान्यता मिल चुकी है।
अब सारनाथ के विश्व धरोहर स्थल बनने से राज्य में विदेशी पर्यटकों की संख्या बढ़ेगी, उनका प्रवास लंबा होगा और पूरे बौद्ध पर्यटन परिपथ को नई अंतरराष्ट्रीय पहचान और गति प्राप्त होगी।
