Jharkhand was honored with the “Best-Performing State” award on Saturday for its remarkable performance in successfully conducting the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections held last year.

In a significant achievement, the state received national recognition for the first time for ensuring the smooth and efficient conduct of the elections, according to a statement issued by the office of Jharkhand’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu to Jharkhand CEO K. Ravikumar during the National Voter’s Day event at Zorawar Auditorium, Manekshaw Centre, in Delhi.

Expressing gratitude, Ravikumar dedicated the award to all voters of the state, booth-level officers (BLOs), polling personnel, police officers, security forces, political parties, and media representatives who contributed to the successful management of the elections. “The credit for the free, fair, and peaceful conduct of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in 2024 goes to all stakeholders involved in the electoral process. This achievement is a testament to the collective efforts of everyone,” he said.

The statement from the CEO’s office highlighted several innovative measures undertaken during the elections to ensure their success. One key initiative was to make the voter list more integrated, inclusive, and error-free. Booth-level officers were tasked with verifying voters at every household multiple times, ensuring accuracy and updating the records. Stickers were also placed on houses to mark verified voters.

Special efforts were made to include voters from particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) in the electoral process. Additionally, polling stations were equipped with assured minimum facilities, including electricity, drinking water, toilets, wheelchairs, and ramps to ensure accessibility for disabled and senior voters.

For voters in remote villages, polling stations were constructed within their communities, and transportation was arranged for those living more than 2 kilometers from polling locations. The arrangement of transportation also helped voters to a great extent. The CEO’s office also noted the peaceful participation of voters in Maoist-affected areas, where citizens exercised their rights freely, many for the first time.

These measures collectively ensured free, fair, and inclusive elections, earning Jharkhand national recognition. Ravikumar emphasized that the award represents the dedication of everyone involved and the state’s commitment to strengthening democracy.
