Vijay Aggarwal Faces UK Court After London Police File Sexual Assault Charges
Indian lawyer Vijay Aggarwal has been remanded in custody in London after police filed four sexual assault charges against him. The case is scheduled to move to Southwark Crown Court on September 10.
The Delhi-based lawyer, who has appeared in several high-profile Indian financial and political cases, has been remanded in custody along with a woman charged with allegedly assisting offences.
London: Indian lawyer Vijay Aggarwal has been remanded in custody by a London court after the Metropolitan Police brought four sexual assault charges against him following an investigation into allegations involving two women.
The 57-year-old Delhi-based advocate appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court after police arrested him at a property in Mayfair, one of London’s affluent central districts.
A 41-year-old woman, Manpreet Kaur, was also produced before the court in connection with the same investigation.
She has been charged with two counts of intentionally encouraging or assisting the commission of an offence that can be dealt with in either a magistrates’ court or a crown court.
Both have been ordered to remain in custody pending their next court appearance at Southwark Crown Court on September 10.
The charges against Aggarwal relate to four alleged incidents of sexual assault.
Police said their investigation was linked to complaints concerning incidents reported to have occurred on May 26 and August 9.
The complainants have not been publicly identified. Metropolitan Police said the two women continue to receive support from specialist officers.
The arrests followed police attendance at a residential property on Brick Street in the Mayfair area.
Investigators also detained two other individuals—a 23-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman—as part of the inquiry.
Neither has been charged so far, and both were released on bail while further inquiries continue. British police have not disclosed their identities.
The case has attracted considerable attention in India because Aggarwal has been associated with the defence of several prominent personalities facing major criminal and financial investigations.
His legal career has largely focused on complex white-collar and economic crime litigation, and he has appeared in cases investigated by agencies including the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate.
Aggarwal rose to wider prominence through his involvement as defence counsel in the 2G spectrum allocation case.
During his career, he has represented clients connected with some of India’s most closely watched corporate and political investigations.
Among the prominent names associated with his legal practice are businessman Nirav Modi, former Yes Bank managing director Rana Kapoor,
Deepak Kochhar in the ICICI-Videocon loan case and Rajiv Saxena in proceedings linked to the AgustaWestland matter.
He has also represented political figures, including former telecom minister A Raja, DMK leader Kanimozhi and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal.
The London proceedings, however, concern allegations entirely separate from those cases and are now before the British criminal justice system.
Under UK law, a criminal charge means that authorities have formally decided to prosecute a person. It does not establish guilt, which can only be determined through the judicial process.
The case is expected to proceed at Southwark Crown Court, where the allegations against Aggarwal and the charges involving Kaur will be dealt with in accordance with the next stage of the proceedings.

लंदन: भारत के चर्चित आपराधिक वकील विजय अग्रवाल के खिलाफ ब्रिटेन में गंभीर आपराधिक कार्रवाई शुरू हो गई है।
लंदन की एक अदालत ने यौन उत्पीड़न के चार आरोपों का सामना कर रहे अग्रवाल को न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया है।
57 वर्षीय विजय अग्रवाल को लंदन की मेट्रोपॉलिटन पुलिस ने गिरफ्तार करने के बाद वेस्टमिंस्टर मजिस्ट्रेट कोर्ट में पेश किया।
अदालत ने उन्हें हिरासत में भेजते हुए मामले की अगली कार्यवाही के लिए 10 सितंबर की तारीख तय की है। अब यह मामला साउथवार्क क्राउन कोर्ट के समक्ष जाएगा।
इस मामले में अग्रवाल अकेले आरोपी नहीं हैं।
41 वर्षीय मनप्रीत कौर को भी उसी जांच के संबंध में गिरफ्तार किया गया था। उन पर कथित अपराधों को जानबूझकर प्रोत्साहित करने या उन्हें अंजाम देने में सहायता करने के दो आरोप लगाए गए हैं।
अदालत ने मनप्रीत कौर को भी हिरासत में भेज दिया है।
पुलिस जांच उन शिकायतों से शुरू हुई, जिनमें दो अलग-अलग तारीखों पर यौन उत्पीड़न के आरोप लगाए गए थे। कथित घटनाओं के 26 मई और 9 अगस्त को होने की बात कही गई है।
लंदन पुलिस के अनुसार, जांच के दौरान अग्रवाल के खिलाफ चार अलग-अलग यौन उत्पीड़न के आरोप लगाए गए।
मेट्रोपॉलिटन पुलिस ने शिकायत करने वाली दोनों महिलाओं की पहचान सार्वजनिक नहीं की है। पुलिस का कहना है कि दोनों को विशेष रूप से प्रशिक्षित अधिकारियों की सहायता उपलब्ध कराई जा रही है।
जांच के दौरान दो अन्य लोगों को भी गिरफ्तार किया गया था। इनमें एक 23 वर्षीय पुरुष और 43 वर्षीय महिला शामिल हैं।
हालांकि, उनके खिलाफ अभी औपचारिक आरोप तय नहीं किए गए हैं। दोनों को आगे की जांच जारी रहने तक जमानत पर रिहा कर दिया गया है। ब्रिटिश पुलिस ने उनकी पहचान सार्वजनिक नहीं की है।
विजय अग्रवाल की गिरफ्तारी ने भारत में भी ध्यान आकर्षित किया है क्योंकि उनका नाम कई चर्चित मामलों में कानूनी पैरवी से जुड़ा रहा है।

राजनीतिक मामलों में वह पूर्व केंद्रीय दूरसंचार मंत्री ए. राजा, DMK नेता कनिमोझी और वरिष्ठ NCP नेता छगन भुजबल की ओर से भी पेश हो चुके हैं।
लंदन में उनके खिलाफ दर्ज वर्तमान मामला इन पुराने मामलों से अलग है और इसकी सुनवाई ब्रिटेन की न्यायिक व्यवस्था के तहत होगी।
ब्रिटिश कानून में किसी व्यक्ति पर औपचारिक आरोप लगाए जाने का अर्थ यह नहीं है कि वह दोषी साबित हो गया है। दोष या निर्दोष होने का अंतिम फैसला अदालत में उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों और कानूनी प्रक्रिया के आधार पर होगा।
फिलहाल विजय अग्रवाल और उनके साथ आरोपी मनप्रीत कौर दोनों को हिरासत में रखा गया है।
मामले की अगली सुनवाई 10 सितंबर को साउथवार्क क्राउन कोर्ट में होगी, जहां इस मामले की आगे की न्यायिक प्रक्रिया शुरू होगी।
