Jharkhand Inter-Caste Marriage Sparks Family Boycott as Parents Hold Symbolic Funeral for Daughter
A deeply emotional family dispute has emerged in Jharkhand’s Chatra district after a 21-year-old woman chose to marry a man from another caste against the wishes of her parents.
Unable to accept her decision, the woman’s family organised symbolic funeral rituals, carrying an effigy with her photograph in a funeral procession before performing cremation, shradh, and pind daan ceremonies.
Meanwhile, the groom’s family claims they have been facing indirect threats ever since the marriage.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that the young woman is legally an adult and had clearly informed police that she had entered into the marriage voluntarily.
The bride belongs to a Brahmin family, while the groom serves as an Agniveer soldier and belongs to the Dangi community, which is recognised under the Kushwaha (OBC) category in Jharkhand.
According to Gidhaur police station in-charge Purushottam Agnihotri, the woman’s parents initially approached the police alleging that their daughter had been taken away without consent.
Police later traced the couple and brought them to the station for questioning. During the interaction, the 21-year-old woman firmly stated that no one had forced or influenced her and that she had married entirely of her own choice.
Since the woman denied any coercion or abduction, the police said there was no legal basis to register a kidnapping case.
Officials reiterated that her statement clearly established that the marriage had taken place with her free consent.
The charge station further revealed that the woman expressed discomfort over repeated pressure from her family.
She reportedly informed police that if such harassment continued, she would seek assistance from senior officers. Following her statement, the couple was allowed to leave.
Recalling the events, the bride’s mother said the family did not indicate that their daughter intended to marry the soldier.
According to her, preparations had already been completed for her marriage within the Brahmin community, with nearly Rs 5 lakh reportedly spent on the arrangements.
The mother said her daughter had left home claiming she was going to appear for college examinations. The family only discovered the marriage after learning about it later.
She further stated that although police later brought the couple before the family, their daughter refused to accompany them back home despite repeated requests.
Describing the reason behind the symbolic funeral, the grieving mother said the decision stemmed from emotional pain as well as the pressure of maintaining social standing.
She remarked that belonging to a Brahmin family meant they had to answer to society.
In an extraordinary display of protest, relatives carried an effigy displaying the woman’s photograph to the cremation ground.
Funeral chants of “Ram Naam Satya Hai” echoed during the procession before symbolic cremation, shradh and pind daan rituals were performed, treating her as though she had passed away.
Offering a contrasting perspective, the groom’s father said both families had initially been aware of the relationship and that the couple ultimately married according to their own wishes.
He added that his family had accepted the marriage without objection.
However, he alleged that the family has been experiencing indirect intimidation ever since.
Although no one had openly confronted them, he claimed that people had been making threatening remarks while the family was consciously avoiding any confrontation to prevent tensions from escalating.
The groom’s father also alleged that certain videos were being circulated on social media in an apparent attempt to damage his son’s career prospects and create unnecessary controversy around the marriage.
When asked whether police protection had been sought, he clarified that no formal request had been made because there had been no direct attack.
Nevertheless, he admitted that the prevailing atmosphere remained a matter of concern for the family.
Several members of the local Brahmin community also participated in the symbolic funeral procession, reflecting the broader social response to the marriage.
Meanwhile, Sanjay Pandey, the Gidhaur block president of a Brahmin community organisation, said community members attended the ceremony in solidarity.
However, he denied that the organisation had instructed or encouraged the family to conduct the symbolic last rites.
Responding to the allegations of intimidation, police station in-charge Purushottam Agnihotri said authorities would examine any complaint submitted by the groom’s family.
He added that if the family provides videos or other evidence supporting allegations of threats, the police will investigate the matter and extend all necessary legal assistance.

झारखंड के चतरा जिले से एक ऐसा मामला सामने आया है जिसने सामाजिक परंपराओं और व्यक्तिगत स्वतंत्रता के बीच टकराव को उजागर कर दिया है। 21 वर्षीय युवती ने परिवार की इच्छा के विरुद्ध दूसरी जाति के युवक से विवाह कर लिया, जिसके बाद उसके परिजनों ने उसे मृत मानते हुए प्रतीकात्मक अंतिम संस्कार कर दिया।
युवती की तस्वीर लगी अर्थी निकाली गई, उसका दाह संस्कार किया गया और श्राद्ध व पिंडदान की रस्में भी पूरी की गईं। दूसरी ओर, दूल्हे के परिवार का आरोप है कि विवाह के बाद से उन्हें परोक्ष रूप से धमकियां मिल रही हैं।
पुलिस अधिकारियों के अनुसार युवती बालिग है और उसने स्पष्ट रूप से कहा कि उसने अपनी मर्जी से विवाह किया है। युवती ब्राह्मण परिवार से ताल्लुक रखती है, जबकि उसका पति अग्निवीर सैनिक है और डांगी समुदाय से आता है, जिसे झारखंड में कुशवाहा (ओबीसी) वर्ग में शामिल किया गया है।
गिद्धौर थाना प्रभारी पुरुषोत्तम अग्निहोत्री ने बताया कि शुरुआत में युवती के परिजनों ने शिकायत दर्ज कराते हुए आरोप लगाया था कि उनकी बेटी को बहला-फुसलाकर ले जाया गया है।
जांच के दौरान पुलिस ने दोनों को तलाश कर थाने पर बुलाया। पूछताछ में युवती ने साफ शब्दों में कहा कि वह अपनी इच्छा से घर छोड़कर गई थी और बिना किसी दबाव के अपनी पसंद के युवक से विवाह किया है।
पुलिस का कहना है कि युवती द्वारा किसी तरह की जबरदस्ती या अपहरण से इनकार किए जाने के बाद अपहरण का मामला दर्ज करने का कोई कानूनी आधार नहीं बचा। अधिकारियों ने दोहराया कि विवाह पूरी तरह उसकी स्वेच्छा से हुआ है।
थाना प्रभारी के मुताबिक, युवती ने यह भी बताया कि परिवार की ओर से उस पर लगातार दबाव बनाया जा रहा था। उसने चेतावनी दी कि यदि यह सिलसिला जारी रहा तो वह वरिष्ठ पुलिस अधिकारियों से मदद मांगेगी। इसके बाद पुलिस ने दोनों को जाने की अनुमति दे दी।
युवती की मां ने बताया कि परिवार को इस बात का बिल्कुल अंदाजा नहीं था कि उनकी बेटी सैनिक से विवाह करने जा रही है। उन्होंने कहा कि बेटी की शादी पहले ही ब्राह्मण समाज में तय कर दी गई थी और तैयारियों पर लगभग पांच लाख रुपये खर्च किए जा चुके थे।
मां के अनुसार, बेटी घर से यह कहकर निकली थी कि वह कॉलेज में परीक्षा देने जा रही है। बाद में परिवार को उसके विवाह की जानकारी मिली।
उन्होंने बताया कि पुलिस बाद में दोनों को परिवार के सामने लेकर आई थी, लेकिन काफी समझाने के बावजूद बेटी ने घर लौटने से साफ इनकार कर दिया।
प्रतीकात्मक अंतिम संस्कार किए जाने के कारण पर बात करते हुए मां ने कहा कि यह फैसला केवल भावनात्मक पीड़ा ही नहीं, बल्कि समाज के दबाव का भी परिणाम था। उनका कहना था कि ब्राह्मण परिवार होने के कारण उन्हें समाज के सामने जवाब देना पड़ता है।
इसके बाद परिजनों ने युवती की तस्वीर लगी प्रतीकात्मक अर्थी निकाली। “राम नाम सत्य है” के उद्घोष के बीच अर्थी श्मशान घाट पहुंची, जहां प्रतीकात्मक दाह संस्कार के बाद श्राद्ध और पिंडदान की सभी धार्मिक रस्में निभाई गईं और बेटी को मृत मानकर अंतिम संस्कार संपन्न किया गया।
दूसरी ओर, दूल्हे के पिता ने दावा किया कि दोनों परिवार इस रिश्ते से पहले से परिचित थे और बेटे-बेटी ने अपनी इच्छा से विवाह किया। उन्होंने कहा कि उनके परिवार ने इस फैसले को स्वीकार कर लिया है।
हालांकि उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि विवाह के बाद से उनके परिवार को अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से धमकाने की कोशिशें की जा रही हैं। उनका कहना था कि लोग तरह-तरह की बातें कर रहे हैं, लेकिन वे किसी भी विवाद से बचना चाहते हैं ताकि स्थिति और न बिगड़े।
उन्होंने यह भी आरोप लगाया कि सोशल मीडिया पर कुछ वीडियो जानबूझकर प्रसारित किए जा रहे हैं, जिनका उद्देश्य उनके बेटे की नौकरी और भविष्य को प्रभावित करना है।
पुलिस सुरक्षा के सवाल पर उन्होंने कहा कि अब तक किसी ने सीधे तौर पर हमला या सामना नहीं किया है, इसलिए औपचारिक शिकायत नहीं की गई। इसके बावजूद मौजूदा माहौल को लेकर परिवार चिंतित बना हुआ है।
प्रतीकात्मक अंतिम संस्कार में स्थानीय ब्राह्मण समाज के कई लोगों ने भी भाग लिया, जिससे इस घटना को सामाजिक समर्थन का स्वरूप मिलता दिखाई दिया।
वहीं, ब्राह्मण समाज के गिद्धौर प्रखंड अध्यक्ष संजय पांडेय ने कहा कि समाज के लोग अंतिम यात्रा में शामिल हुए थे, लेकिन संगठन ने परिवार को ऐसा करने के लिए न तो कोई निर्देश दिया और न ही इस तरह का निर्णय लेने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
धमकी के आरोपों पर प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए थाना प्रभारी पुरुषोत्तम अग्निहोत्री ने कहा कि यदि दूल्हे का परिवार औपचारिक शिकायत दर्ज कराता है तो पुलिस पूरे मामले की निष्पक्ष जांच करेगी।
उन्होंने कहा कि यदि परिवार कथित धमकियों से जुड़े वीडियो या अन्य साक्ष्य उपलब्ध कराता है, तो पुलिस कानून के अनुसार कार्रवाई करते हुए उन्हें हरसंभव सुरक्षा और सहायता प्रदान करेगी।
