Pandavani Legend Teejan Bai’s Legacy Lives On Through Her Disciple and RPF Inspector Taruna Sahu
A heartfelt promise made to her mentor continues to guide the life of Railway Protection Force (RPF) Inspector Taruna Sahu even today.
Soon after earning her police uniform, Sahu made it a point to visit her guru, the legendary Pandavani exponent Teejan Bai, to seek her blessings.
Instead of congratulating her on the achievement, the veteran folk artist gave her a simple yet meaningful message—never abandon the centuries-old tradition of Pandavani. Taruna says she has honoured that commitment ever since.
The passing of Teejan Bai at the age of 69 at AIIMS Raipur after a prolonged illness marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in Indian folk culture.
Hailing from the Pardhi community, she shattered long-standing social barriers to become the first woman from her community to earn national recognition for performing Pandavani, the traditional oral storytelling art based on the Mahabharata.
Her influence, however, lives on through the more than 200 disciples she mentored over several decades.
Among those deeply inspired by her is 40-year-old Taruna Sahu, currently posted as an RPF Inspector in Rajnandgaon.
Her association with Teejan Bai began during her childhood in the 1990s while studying at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya.
What started as a school training programme eventually transformed into one of the most defining relationships of her life.
Recalling her first encounter with the legendary artist, Taruna said she was a hostel student who loved singing loudly in the classroom.
Her music teacher noticed her talent and introduced her to Teejan Bai’s training camp. Out of nearly 100 students, only 10 were selected to perform alongside the renowned artist in Delhi after just 15 days of practice.
Their presentation of Draupadi Swayamvar became the beginning of a remarkable journey.
Over the years, Taruna shared the stage with her guru more than 50 times and even had the privilege of performing before former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
The bond between the guru and her disciple extended far beyond music. Taruna spent nearly 16 years learning directly under Teejan Bai, who treated her like a member of the family.
She fondly remembers staying at her mentor’s house and says those years gave her not only artistic training but also an identity that changed the course of her life forever.
Speaking shortly before Teejan Bai’s demise, Taruna shared several personal memories that revealed the woman behind the celebrated performer.
She remembered how her guru enjoyed wearing colourful bangles, gold jewellery, and make-up.
Applying lipstick, kajal,l and traditional lali before every performance was part of her routine, while chewing paan had become an inseparable ritual before stepping onto the stage.
Despite pursuing a demanding career in the police force, Taruna never allowed her artistic roots to fade away.
She continues performing Pandavani during weekends, holidays, and whenever her official responsibilities permit.
While acknowledging that the traditional art form alone cannot provide financial stability, she says her love for Pandavani remains stronger than any professional obligation.
Taruna recalls that the first thing Teejan Bai told her after she became a police officer was to continue performing Pandavani regardless of her career.
That advice became a lifelong promise.
According to her, although the folk tradition may not guarantee a steady income, its emotional and cultural value makes it impossible for her to leave behind.
Determined to make Pandavani relevant for younger generations, Taruna is now experimenting with modern presentation techniques.
Since the performances are delivered in the Chhattisgarhi language, many audiences outside the state struggle to understand the lyrics.
To bridge that gap, she is developing visual backdrops that complement the live narration and songs, making the two-hour performances easier for wider audiences to appreciate.
Passing the tradition to the next generation has also become one of her biggest priorities.
She recently met a young girl who developed an interest in Pandavani after watching one of her performances on YouTube.
The child’s mother later brought her for training, giving Taruna renewed hope that the ancient storytelling tradition will continue to flourish through future artists.
For Taruna, Pandavani represents much more than entertainment. She believes the stories from the Mahabharata teach timeless lessons about truth, justice, and the battle between righteousness and evil.
Drawing from her experience as a police officer, she says these moral teachings remain highly relevant in today’s society.
She also feels government-supported Pandavani training camps should continue because similar initiatives introduced her to Teejan Bai and transformed her life.
Paying tribute to the late folk icon, Padma Shri awardee and noted musician Anup Ranjan Pandey described Teejan Bai as far more than an accomplished performer.
According to him, she symbolised the cultural soul of India, carrying the country’s traditions, values and spiritual heritage to audiences around the world through her powerful voice, tambura and unforgettable interpretations of the Mahabharata.
Veteran broadcaster Sudhir Saxena also remembered Teejan Bai’s early days with great affection.
He recalled interviewing her for the first time in 1978, describing her as a fearless and confident young performer. Soon after that interview, she delivered a performance on Akashvani radio and proudly received her very first payment as an artist.
Teejan Bai’s remarkable journey also reached television audiences when she appeared in filmmaker Shyam Benegal’s acclaimed series Bharat Ek Khoj.
Her presence in the iconic production introduced the rich tradition of Pandavani to millions of viewers across the country, ensuring that her voice and legacy would inspire generations to come.
रेलवे सुरक्षा बल (आरपीएफ) की इंस्पेक्टर तरुणा साहू आज भी अपनी गुरु को दिया गया एक वादा पूरी निष्ठा से निभा रही हैं। पुलिस अधिकारी बनने के बाद उन्होंने सबसे पहले अपनी गुरु और महान पंडवानी कलाकार तीजन बाई से आशीर्वाद लेने का निर्णय लिया। उस मुलाकात में तीजन बाई ने उन्हें केवल एक बात कही—चाहे जीवन में कितनी भी ऊंचाइयाँ हासिल कर लो, लेकिन पंडवानी की परंपरा को कभी मत छोड़ना। तरुणा का कहना है कि उन्होंने आज तक उस वचन को निभाया है।
लंबी बीमारी के बाद 69 वर्ष की आयु में रायपुर स्थित एम्स में तीजन बाई का निधन भारतीय लोक संस्कृति के लिए अपूरणीय क्षति माना जा रहा है।
पारधी समुदाय से आने वाली तीजन बाई ने सदियों पुरानी सामाजिक बाधाओं को तोड़ते हुए राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर पहचान बनाने वाली अपनी बिरादरी की पहली महिला पंडवानी कलाकार बनने का गौरव हासिल किया।
महाभारत की कथाओं पर आधारित इस लोककला को उन्होंने देश ही नहीं बल्कि दुनिया भर में नई पहचान दिलाई। उनके द्वारा प्रशिक्षित 200 से अधिक शिष्य आज उनकी विरासत को आगे बढ़ा रहे हैं।
इन्हीं शिष्यों में 40 वर्षीय तरुणा साहू भी शामिल हैं, जो वर्तमान में राजनांदगांव में आरपीएफ इंस्पेक्टर के रूप में कार्यरत हैं।
उनका तीजन बाई से पहला परिचय 1990 के दशक में जवाहर नवोदय विद्यालय में पढ़ाई के दौरान हुआ था। एक साधारण प्रशिक्षण शिविर से शुरू हुआ यह रिश्ता आगे चलकर उनके जीवन की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण सीख बन गया।
अपने शुरुआती दिनों को याद करते हुए तरुणा बताती हैं कि छात्रावास में रहते हुए उन्हें गाना गाने का बेहद शौक था। एक दिन उनकी संगीत शिक्षिका ने उनकी प्रतिभा पहचानकर उन्हें तीजन बाई के प्रशिक्षण शिविर में भेजा।
करीब 100 बच्चों में से केवल 10 विद्यार्थियों का चयन दिल्ली में तीजन बाई के साथ मंच साझा करने के लिए हुआ। महज 15 दिनों की तैयारी के बाद उन्होंने द्रौपदी स्वयंवर की प्रस्तुति दी।
इसके बाद उन्होंने अपनी गुरु के साथ 50 से अधिक मंचीय कार्यक्रम किए और पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री अटल बिहारी वाजपेयी के सामने प्रस्तुति देने का गौरव भी प्राप्त किया।
गुरु और शिष्या का रिश्ता केवल कला तक सीमित नहीं रहा। लगभग 16 वर्षों तक तरुणा ने तीजन बाई के सान्निध्य में रहकर पंडवानी सीखी। वह बताती हैं कि उनकी गुरु ने उन्हें अपनी बेटी की तरह स्नेह दिया, अपने घर में रहने की अनुमति दी और जीवन में एक नई पहचान बनाने का अवसर प्रदान किया।
तीजन बाई के निधन से कुछ दिन पहले तरुणा ने अपनी गुरु की निजी यादें भी साझा की थीं। उनके अनुसार, तीजन बाई को रंग-बिरंगी चूड़ियाँ, सोने के आभूषण और श्रृंगार का विशेष शौक था। हर प्रस्तुति से पहले लाली, लिपस्टिक और काजल लगाना उनकी आदत थी, जबकि मंच पर जाने से पहले पान खाना उनके लिए एक तरह की परंपरा बन चुका था।
पुलिस सेवा जैसी व्यस्त जिम्मेदारियों के बावजूद तरुणा ने अपनी लोककला से कभी दूरी नहीं बनाई।
आज भी वह छुट्टियों और साप्ताहिक अवकाश के दौरान पंडवानी प्रस्तुत करती हैं। उनका मानना है कि भले ही इस कला से आजीविका चलाना आसान नहीं है, लेकिन यह उनके जीवन का सबसे बड़ा जुनून है।
तरुणा बताती हैं कि पुलिस अधिकारी बनने के बाद जब वह वर्दी पहनकर अपनी गुरु से मिलने गईं तो तीजन बाई ने सबसे पहले उन्हें पंडवानी को कभी न छोड़ने की सलाह दी। यही सीख उनके जीवन का संकल्प बन गई। उनका कहना है कि आर्थिक चुनौतियों के बावजूद इस लोककला से उनका भावनात्मक जुड़ाव इतना गहरा है कि इसे छोड़ने की कल्पना भी नहीं की जा सकती।
नई पीढ़ी को पंडवानी से जोड़ने के लिए तरुणा आधुनिक तकनीक का भी सहारा ले रही है। चूंकि यह कला छत्तीसगढ़ी भाषा में प्रस्तुत की जाती है, इसलिए राज्य के बाहर के दर्शकों को इसे समझने में कठिनाई होती है।
इसी वजह से वह मंच पर दृश्यात्मक प्रस्तुतियों और पृष्ठभूमि ग्राफिक्स का उपयोग करने की योजना बना रही हैं, ताकि लगभग दो घंटे तक चलने वाली प्रस्तुति अधिक प्रभावशाली और सभी के लिए सहज बन सके।
तरुणा का मानना है कि इस विरासत को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए बच्चों को प्रशिक्षित करना बेहद आवश्यक है। हाल ही में यूट्यूब पर उनकी प्रस्तुति देखने के बाद एक छोटी बच्ची पंडवानी गाने लगी। बाद में उसकी मां उसे प्रशिक्षण के लिए लेकर आई।
इस घटना ने तरुणा को विश्वास दिलाया कि आने वाली पीढ़ियां भी इस अमूल्य लोककला को जीवित रखेंगी।
उनके अनुसार, पंडवानी केवल मनोरंजन का माध्यम नहीं बल्कि जीवन के नैतिक मूल्यों की शिक्षा देने वाली परंपरा है। महाभारत की कथाओं के माध्यम से यह अच्छाई और बुराई के बीच अंतर समझाती है।
एक पुलिस अधिकारी के रूप में अपराध और समाज की चुनौतियों को करीब से देखने के बाद भी उन्हें विश्वास है कि यह लोककला लोगों को बेहतर इंसान बनने की प्रेरणा दे सकती है।
उनका सुझाव है कि सरकार को पंडवानी प्रशिक्षण शिविरों की परंपरा जारी रखनी चाहिए, क्योंकि इसी पहल ने उन्हें तीजन बाई जैसी महान गुरु से मिलवाया था।
पद्मश्री से सम्मानित संगीतकार और लोकनाट्य कलाकार अनूप रंजन पांडेय ने तीजन बाई को श्रद्धांजलि देते हुए कहा कि वह केवल एक लोक कलाकार नहीं थीं, बल्कि भारत की सांस्कृतिक आत्मा का सजीव प्रतीक थीं। उनकी बुलंद आवाज, तंबूरा और महाभारत की प्रभावशाली प्रस्तुतियों ने भारतीय संस्कृति, परंपराओं और आध्यात्मिक मूल्यों को विश्वभर तक पहुंचाया।
वरिष्ठ प्रसारक सुधीर सक्सेना ने भी तीजन बाई के शुरुआती संघर्षों को याद किया। उन्होंने बताया कि 1978 में उनका पहला साक्षात्कार लिया था, तब भी उनके भीतर अद्भुत आत्मविश्वास दिखाई देता था। उसी इंटरव्यू के बाद उन्होंने आकाशवाणी पर प्रस्तुति दी और अपने कलाकार जीवन का पहला पारिश्रमिक प्राप्त किया।
लोककला को देशभर के घरों तक पहुंचाने में तीजन बाई का योगदान टेलीविजन के माध्यम से भी रहा। प्रसिद्ध फिल्मकार श्याम बेनेगल की चर्चित श्रृंखला ‘भारत एक खोज’ में उनकी उपस्थिति ने लाखों दर्शकों को पहली बार पंडवानी की समृद्ध परंपरा से परिचित कराया। उनकी आवाज और उनकी विरासत आने वाली पीढ़ियों को लंबे समय तक प्रेरित करती रहेगी।
