Kanpur Newborn Kidnapping Case: Engineer Arrested Over Alleged ₹5 Lakh Baby Boy Deal

Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh: A power department engineer in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur has been arrested for allegedly offering an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) ₹5 lakh to arrange a baby boy, police said, after investigators uncovered his alleged connection with an attempted newborn abduction at a community health centre.
The accused, identified as 40-year-old Ram Kumar Verma, is currently posted as a Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) at an electricity sub-station in Maudaha, Hamirpur.
Police said he is a native of Kanpur and has two daughters, aged eight and 11.
The alleged arrangement came to light during the investigation into ANM Geeta Devi, who was arrested two months ago after she was allegedly caught attempting to take a newborn boy from the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Ghatampur.
Phone records lead police to engineer
According to Ghatampur Station House Officer Manoj Singh Bhadauria, investigators examined Geeta’s call records after her arrest and found that she had remained in frequent contact with Verma in the days preceding the alleged attempt to take the baby.
Police also examined location data from Verma’s mobile phone.
According to investigators, it placed him in the vicinity of the Ghatampur CHC around the time hospital staff intercepted Geeta.
The new information prompted police to question Geeta again while she was in custody.
During questioning, she allegedly told investigators that Verma had promised to pay her ₹5 lakh if she succeeded in arranging a male child for him, the SHO said.
Police subsequently located Verma and questioned him. Officers said he admitted to the allegations during interrogation and was arrested.
He was later produced before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
Nurse allegedly caught leaving with newborn
The original incident occurred around 9 pm on May 10, when Geeta allegedly picked up a newborn baby from the Ghatampur CHC and attempted to leave the facility without being noticed.
Hospital staff reportedly intercepted her before she could leave the premises and alerted the police.
A case was subsequently registered against her at Ghatampur police station under provisions relating to kidnapping, human trafficking and criminal conspiracy.
At the time of her arrest, police said Geeta had not disclosed any alleged involvement of another person. She initially appeared to have acted independently, investigators said.
The subsequent examination of her communications, however, led police to investigate her association with Verma.
Alleged desire for son behind plot
Police said Verma already had two daughters and allegedly wanted a male child. Investigators believe this was the motive behind the alleged arrangement with Geeta.
The police also said Verma and Geeta had known each other for several years. According to investigators, they first came into contact when Verma was posted in Kanpur Dehat and remained in communication thereafter.
The investigation is now focused on establishing the full circumstances surrounding the alleged attempt to obtain the newborn and determining whether anyone else was involved.
Probe continues
The arrest of Verma has added a new dimension to the newborn kidnapping case, which initially centred on the ANM’s alleged attempt to remove the child from the health centre.
Police said digital and other evidence is being examined as part of the investigation.
The allegations against Verma remain subject to judicial proceedings, and his arrest or alleged admission during police questioning does not by itself establish guilt.

कानपुर, उत्तर प्रदेश: उत्तर प्रदेश के कानपुर में नवजात बच्चे को कथित तौर पर चोरी कर ले जाने की कोशिश के मामले की जांच में एक चौंकाने वाला कनेक्शन सामने आया है।
पुलिस ने बिजली विभाग के एक इंजीनियर को गिरफ्तार किया है, जिस पर आरोप है कि उसने एक महिला स्वास्थ्यकर्मी को ₹5 लाख देकर अपने लिए एक बेटा लाने की कथित पेशकश की थी।
गिरफ्तार आरोपी की पहचान 40 वर्षीय राम कुमार वर्मा के रूप में हुई है। वह फिलहाल हमीरपुर के मौदहा स्थित बिजली उपकेंद्र में सब-डिविजनल ऑफिसर (SDO) के पद पर तैनात है।
पुलिस के मुताबिक, वह मूल रूप से कानपुर का रहने वाला है और उसकी दो बेटियां हैं, जिनकी उम्र आठ और 11 वर्ष है।
यह कथित सौदा उस मामले की जांच के दौरान सामने आया, जिसमें Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) गीता देवी को दो महीने पहले घाटमपुर सामुदायिक स्वास्थ्य केंद्र (CHC) से एक नवजात को कथित तौर पर ले जाने की कोशिश करते हुए पकड़ा गया था।
कॉल रिकॉर्ड से खुला इंजीनियर से संपर्क
घाटमपुर थाना प्रभारी मनोज सिंह भदौरिया के मुताबिक, गीता की गिरफ्तारी के बाद पुलिस ने उसके मोबाइल फोन के कॉल रिकॉर्ड की जांच की।
इसमें आरोपी इंजीनियर राम कुमार वर्मा से उसकी गिरफ्तारी से पहले लगातार संपर्क होने की जानकारी सामने आई।
जांचकर्ताओं ने वर्मा के मोबाइल फोन की लोकेशन भी खंगाली। पुलिस का कहना है कि घटना के समय उसका फोन घाटमपुर CHC के आसपास मौजूद था।
इन तथ्यों के सामने आने के बाद पुलिस ने जेल में बंद गीता से दोबारा पूछताछ की।
पुलिस के अनुसार, पूछताछ में गीता ने कथित तौर पर बताया कि वर्मा ने उससे एक बच्चे का इंतजाम करने के बदले ₹5 लाख देने की बात कही थी।
इसके बाद पुलिस ने वर्मा को तलाश कर पूछताछ की। पुलिस का दावा है कि पूछताछ के दौरान उसने अपराध स्वीकार किया।
इसके बाद उसे गिरफ्तार कर अदालत में पेश किया गया, जहां से उसे न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया गया।
CHC से नवजात को ले जाने की कोशिश
मामला 10 मई की रात करीब 9 बजे का बताया गया है। पुलिस के मुताबिक, गीता ने घाटमपुर CHC से एक नवजात बच्चे को उठाया और अस्पताल से चुपचाप बाहर निकलने की कोशिश की।
हालांकि, अस्पताल के कर्मचारियों ने उसे कथित तौर पर बच्चे के साथ बाहर निकलने से पहले ही पकड़ लिया और पुलिस को सूचना दी।
इसके बाद घाटमपुर थाने में गीता के खिलाफ अपहरण, मानव तस्करी और आपराधिक साजिश से संबंधित धाराओं में मुकदमा दर्ज किया गया।
शुरुआती पूछताछ के दौरान गीता ने किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति की भूमिका का खुलासा नहीं किया था। पुलिस के मुताबिक, उस समय ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ कि उसने यह कदम अपने स्तर पर उठाया था।
बाद में उसके मोबाइल रिकॉर्ड की जांच से पुलिस को उसके और वर्मा के बीच संपर्क का पता चला, जिसके बाद जांच का दायरा बढ़ाया गया।
दो बेटियों के पिता पर बेटे की चाहत का आरोप
पुलिस के अनुसार, वर्मा की पहले से दो बेटियां हैं और वह कथित तौर पर बेटा चाहता था। जांचकर्ताओं का मानना है कि इसी इच्छा के चलते उसने गीता से कथित संपर्क किया।
पुलिस ने बताया कि वर्मा और गीता एक-दूसरे को कई वर्षों से जानते थे। दोनों की पहचान तब हुई थी, जब वर्मा की तैनाती कानपुर देहात में थी।
इसके बाद भी दोनों के बीच संपर्क बना रहा।
जांच में सामने आएगी पूरी साजिश
वर्मा की गिरफ्तारी से नवजात को CHC से ले जाने की कोशिश का मामला नया मोड़ ले चुका है।
अब पुलिस यह पता लगाने में जुटी है कि कथित योजना में और कौन लोग शामिल थे और नवजात को ले जाने के पीछे पूरी साजिश क्या थी।
जांच एजेंसियां कॉल रिकॉर्ड, मोबाइल लोकेशन और अन्य उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों की पड़ताल कर रही हैं।
हालांकि, पुलिस द्वारा लगाए गए आरोप अभी न्यायिक जांच के अधीन हैं।
गिरफ्तारी या पुलिस पूछताछ में कथित स्वीकारोक्ति अपने आप में दोष सिद्ध होने का अंतिम प्रमाण नहीं है। मामले में अंतिम निर्णय अदालत की प्रक्रिया के बाद ही होगा।
