Kerala Murder Mystery Solved After 39 Years: Hospital Clue Leads Police to Fugitive Living Under New Identity

A murder case that had remained unsolved for nearly four decades has finally reached a dramatic turning point, with Kerala Police arresting a 64-year-old man accused of killing his brother-in-law in 1987.
Investigators say the breakthrough came after an unexpected clue surfaced during a hospital visit, ultimately exposing the accused, who had allegedly spent almost four decades living under an assumed identity in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and later in Kerala.
Police identified the accused as Mohanan Pillai Kodiyattu, a native of Veliyam village in Kollam district.
According to investigators, after allegedly committing the murder, he abandoned his old identity, adopted the name Rajan Keshavan, rebuilt his life, married, raised a family, and remained beyond the reach of law enforcement for 39 years.
The arrest followed months of renewed investigation into the long-pending case. Pooyappally Station House Officer O.P. Shajimon said the investigation gained momentum after officers revisited the family background of the accused.
During the inquiry, the team unexpectedly met a person who recalled encountering an individual at Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital a few months earlier.
That man had reportedly been asking about the Kodiyattu family of Veliyam, a detail that immediately attracted the investigators’ attention.
According to the police, the crime dates back to January 11, 1987. Mohanan is accused of murdering his 35-year-old brother-in-law, Chandrasekharan Pillai, following frequent disputes over the latter’s alleged involvement in brewing illicit liquor and storing it at Mohanan’s residence.
Investigators allege that an argument escalated into violence, after which Mohanan fetched a machete from a neighbour’s house and fatally attacked Chandrasekharan by slashing his neck.
During the initial investigation, police recovered the alleged murder weapon from Mohanan’s house and collected other material evidence before he disappeared. Shortly after the incident, he allegedly fled to Tamil Nadu to evade arrest.
Investigators said Mohanan eventually reached Velankanni in Tamil Nadu’s Nagapattinam district, where he found employment in the hospitality sector.
It was there that he met Valsa, who was associated with a family from Kottayam visiting the famous Christian pilgrimage centre.
Recalling those days, Valsa said Rajan, as he introduced himself, gradually became acquainted with her family while staying at the same hotel.
Impressed by his conduct, the family reportedly offered him employment at their rubber nursery in Kottayam.
Several months later, he moved to Kottayam and eventually proposed marriage to Valsa. Believing his claim that he was an orphan, her family accepted the proposal.
The couple later settled in her ancestral home, where he became known locally by the family’s house name, Kalayil.
They have two children, a daughter now aged 37 and a son aged 35.
Meanwhile, police in Kollam continued searching for Mohanan for years. Investigations reportedly extended as far as Mumbai, where he had previously worked.
Although investigators filed a chargesheet after recovering evidence, the trial could not proceed because the accused remained absconding, and over time the case gradually went cold.
SHO Shajimon said the murder weapon and crucial evidence had already been recovered in 1987, and the case file had long been submitted before the court.
However, the absence of the accused prevented further progress in the trial.
The investigation was revived recently as part of efforts to trace long-absconding offenders.
During the fresh inquiry, officers received information that a man living in Kottayam’s Kallara village had been making inquiries about the Kodiyattu family in Veliyam, prompting investigators to coordinate with police stations across Kottayam district.
Further inquiries revealed that Mohanan, now living as Rajan Keshavan, had spent years working in hotels and local shops.
Police also found that he had allegedly developed alcohol addiction, faced allegations of domestic violence, and had obtained official identity documents, including an Aadhaar card and Voter ID, under his assumed identity.
A police officer associated with the investigation said Valsa had on several occasions threatened to report him for allegedly assaulting her.
Whenever local police intervened following her complaints, Rajan would reportedly assure officers that he would reform, allowing the matter to end without further legal consequences.
Two weeks ago, when investigators from Kollam reached his residence, Valsa allegedly informed them that during drunken conversations her husband had occasionally hinted at a hidden past and had even disclosed his real name.
Acting on that information, police located him at the toddy shop where he was employed. Officers also learned that he had reportedly made similar admissions while intoxicated before colleagues there.
SHO Shajimon said the investigation covered hotels across the district because Mohanan had worked in the hospitality sector during the 1980s.
Initially, the suspect denied all allegations, insisting that he was Rajan Keshavan and had lived in the village for nearly three decades.
However, his responses became inconsistent when questioned about his parents and family background.
Investigators then brought him to Veliyam, where his sisters identified him as Mohanan Pillai.
Police have now initiated the process for DNA examination to scientifically establish his identity and complete the legal formalities in the decades-old murder case.
For Valsa and her children, the arrest has brought mixed emotions.
While expressing shock over her husband’s alleged past, she also said she had no intention of extending legal assistance to him.
According to her, years of alcoholism and domestic violence had severely affected the family’s life, even preventing their son and daughter from finding suitable marriage alliances.

करीब चार दशक से अधूरी पड़ी एक हत्या की गुत्थी आखिरकार सुलझ गई। केरल पुलिस ने 1987 में अपने बहनोई की हत्या के आरोप में 64 वर्षीय एक व्यक्ति को गिरफ्तार किया है, जो कथित तौर पर पिछले 39 वर्षों से नई पहचान अपनाकर पहले तमिलनाडु और बाद में केरल में सामान्य जीवन जी रहा था।
पुलिस का कहना है कि एक अस्पताल में मिले छोटे से सुराग ने वर्षों से फरार आरोपी तक पहुंचने का रास्ता खोल दिया।
गिरफ्तार व्यक्ति की पहचान कोल्लम जिले के वेलियम गांव निवासी मोहनन पिल्लै कोडियाट्टू के रूप में हुई है। जांच एजेंसियों के अनुसार हत्या के बाद उसने अपनी पुरानी पहचान छोड़ दी, ‘राजन केशवन’ नाम अपनाया, विवाह किया, परिवार बसाया और वर्षों तक कानून की नजरों से बचा रहा।
हाल के महीनों में पुलिस ने इस पुराने मामले की दोबारा जांच शुरू की। पूयापल्ली थाने के प्रभारी ओ.पी. शाजीमोन ने बताया कि जांच के दौरान पुलिस ने आरोपी के पारिवारिक संबंधों की फिर से पड़ताल की।
इसी क्रम में टीम को एक ऐसे व्यक्ति की जानकारी मिली, जिसने कुछ महीने पहले कोट्टायम सरकारी मेडिकल कॉलेज अस्पताल में एक व्यक्ति को वेलियम के कोडियाट्टू परिवार के बारे में पूछताछ करते देखा था। यही जानकारी पूरे मामले में निर्णायक साबित हुई।
पुलिस के अनुसार 11 जनवरी 1987 को मोहनन ने अपने 35 वर्षीय बहनोई चंद्रशेखरन पिल्लै की हत्या कर दी थी। जांच में सामने आया कि चंद्रशेखरन कथित रूप से अवैध शराब बनाते थे और उसे मोहनन के घर में रखते थे, जिससे दोनों के बीच लंबे समय से विवाद चल रहा था।
आरोप है कि एक दिन विवाद इतना बढ़ गया कि मोहनन पड़ोसी के घर से धारदार हथियार लेकर आया और बहनोई पर जानलेवा हमला कर उसकी गर्दन काट दी।
प्रारंभिक जांच के दौरान पुलिस ने कथित हत्या में प्रयुक्त हथियार मोहनन के घर से बरामद कर लिया था और अन्य महत्वपूर्ण साक्ष्य भी एकत्र कर लिए थे। हालांकि घटना के तुरंत बाद आरोपी फरार हो गया और तमिलनाडु भाग निकला।
जांचकर्ताओं के अनुसार मोहनन तमिलनाडु के नागपट्टिनम जिले स्थित प्रसिद्ध ईसाई तीर्थस्थल वेलंकन्नी पहुंचा, जहां उसने होटल उद्योग में काम करना शुरू किया।
वहीं उसकी मुलाकात वल्सा से हुई, जो कोट्टायम के एक परिवार के साथ तीर्थयात्रा पर आई थीं।
वल्सा ने बताया कि होटल में रहने के दौरान राजन नाम से परिचय देने वाले इस व्यक्ति की उनके परिवार से निकटता बढ़ी। बाद में परिवार ने उसे कोट्टायम स्थित अपने रबर नर्सरी में नौकरी का प्रस्ताव दिया, जिसे उसने स्वीकार कर लिया।
कुछ महीनों बाद वह कोट्टायम आ गया और वल्सा से विवाह का प्रस्ताव रखा। उसने स्वयं को अनाथ बताया, जिस पर विश्वास करते हुए परिवार ने शादी के लिए सहमति दे दी।
विवाह के बाद दोनों वल्सा के पैतृक घर में रहने लगे और स्थानीय लोग उसे परिवार के घराने के नाम ‘कलायिल’ से पहचानने लगे। दंपति के दो बच्चे हैं—37 वर्षीय बेटी और 35 वर्षीय बेटा।
उधर, कोल्लम पुलिस वर्षों तक आरोपी की तलाश में जुटी रही। जांच मुंबई तक भी पहुंची, जहां मोहनन पहले काम कर चुका था।
पर्याप्त साक्ष्य मिलने के बावजूद आरोपी के फरार रहने के कारण अदालत में आरोपपत्र दाखिल होने के बाद भी मुकदमे की सुनवाई आगे नहीं बढ़ सकी और समय के साथ मामला लगभग ठंडे बस्ते में चला गया।
थाना प्रभारी शाजीमोन ने बताया कि हत्या का हथियार और अन्य महत्वपूर्ण साक्ष्य वर्ष 1987 में ही बरामद कर अदालत में प्रस्तुत कर दिए गए थे। लेकिन आरोपी की गिरफ्तारी न होने से न्यायिक प्रक्रिया आगे नहीं बढ़ सकी।
हाल ही में लंबे समय से लंबित मामलों की समीक्षा के दौरान पुलिस ने इस केस को फिर से खोला। नई जांच के दौरान यह जानकारी मिली कि कोट्टायम के कल्लारा गांव में रहने वाला एक व्यक्ति वेलियम स्थित कोडियाट्टू परिवार के बारे में पूछताछ कर रहा था।
इसके बाद कोल्लम पुलिस ने कोट्टायम जिले के विभिन्न थानों के साथ समन्वय स्थापित कर जांच तेज कर दी।
आगे की जांच में पता चला कि राजन केशवन के नाम से रह रहा मोहनन वर्षों तक होटलों और स्थानीय दुकानों में काम करता रहा।
पुलिस का दावा है कि उसे शराब की गंभीर लत लग गई थी, उसके खिलाफ घरेलू हिंसा के आरोप भी सामने आए और उसने आधार कार्ड तथा मतदाता पहचान पत्र सहित कई सरकारी दस्तावेज भी अपनी नई पहचान के आधार पर बनवा लिए थे।
जांच से जुड़े एक पुलिस अधिकारी ने बताया कि वल्सा कई बार पति द्वारा कथित मारपीट से परेशान होकर पुलिस से शिकायत करने की बात कहती थीं। हर बार स्थानीय पुलिस के पहुंचने पर वह भविष्य में सुधार का आश्वासन देता था और मामला वहीं शांत हो जाता था।
करीब दो सप्ताह पहले जब कोल्लम पुलिस उसके घर पहुंची, तब वल्सा ने कथित तौर पर बताया कि नशे की हालत में उसका पति कई बार अपने अतीत के बारे में संकेत देता था और अपना वास्तविक नाम भी बता चुका था।
इसी जानकारी के आधार पर पुलिस ने उसे उस ताड़ी की दुकान से हिरासत में लिया, जहां वह काम कर रहा था। पुलिस को यह भी जानकारी मिली कि वह शराब के नशे में वहां भी अपने अतीत से जुड़े संकेत देता था।
शाजीमोन ने बताया कि जांच के दौरान उन सभी होटलों की भी पड़ताल की गई, जहां आरोपी के काम करने की संभावना थी। गिरफ्तारी के समय उसने स्वयं को राजन केशवन बताते हुए सभी आरोपों से इनकार किया और दावा किया कि वह तीन दशक से उसी गांव में रह रहा है।
लेकिन परिवार और माता-पिता के बारे में पूछे गए सवालों पर उसके जवाब विरोधाभासी हो गए। इसके बाद उसे वेलियम ले जाया गया, जहां उसकी बहनों ने उसकी पहचान मोहनन पिल्लै के रूप में की।
अब पुलिस उसकी पहचान का वैज्ञानिक सत्यापन कराने के लिए डीएनए परीक्षण की प्रक्रिया पूरी कर रही है, ताकि अदालत में सभी कानूनी औपचारिकताएं पूरी की जा सकें।
वल्सा ने पति की गिरफ्तारी पर मिश्रित भावनाएं व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि वह उसके बचाव के लिए कोई कानूनी सहायता उपलब्ध नहीं कराएंगी।
उनके अनुसार वर्षों तक शराब की लत और घरेलू हिंसा ने पूरे परिवार का जीवन प्रभावित किया और इसी कारण उनके बेटे और बेटी के विवाह भी नहीं हो सके।
