Kohat Mosque Blast: Death Toll Rises to 31 in Pakistan Police Compound Attack
Suicide bombing during Friday prayers was followed by an armed assault on a police facility in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leaving dozens dead and injured.
KOHAT, Pakistan: The death toll from a coordinated attack on a police compound in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province rose to 31 on Saturday, a day after a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the complex while police personnel and their families were attending Friday prayers at a mosque.
The attack took place in Kohat, around 60 kilometres southwest of Peshawar.
The initial explosion at the mosque was followed by an assault by armed men who attempted to enter the police facility, triggering a prolonged exchange of fire with security personnel.
The casualty figures increased as rescue operations and the security response continued.
Earlier reports had put the number of fatalities at 16, with dozens of people injured. The toll subsequently climbed as more victims were recovered from the affected compound.
The mosque was located inside a police complex that also housed offices linked to the Special Branch intelligence unit and the Counter Terrorism Department, along with residential facilities for security personnel.
Police officers, their families and other worshippers were present in the compound when the attack occurred.
According to officials, the suicide attacker used a vehicle packed with explosives to breach the compound before detonating it.
Armed attackers then tried to make their way further inside, resulting in a fierce gun battle with police and other security forces.
The powerful explosion caused substantial damage to the compound. Parts of the mosque and surrounding structures were damaged, while debris was scattered across the site. Emergency personnel rushed to the area and began evacuating the wounded to nearby hospitals.
Rescue teams continued searching the affected area for victims as security personnel carried out a detailed operation inside the compound.
The confrontation continued for several hours before authorities announced that the security operation had been brought to an end.
The attack has renewed concerns over militant violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a region that has experienced repeated attacks against police, military personnel and other government installations.
No immediate claim of responsibility was established following the attack.
The circumstances surrounding the assault, including the identities of the attackers and the precise sequence of events, remained under investigation.
Authorities were also assessing the extent of the damage and verifying the final number of casualties as rescue and security operations continued.

कोहाट पख्तूनख्वा की राजधानी पेशावर से करीब 60 किलोमीटर दक्षिण-पश्चिम में स्थित है। मस्जिद में हुए शुरुआती विस्फोट के बाद हथियारबंद हमलावरों ने पुलिस परिसर के भीतर घुसने की कोशिश की।
इसके बाद सुरक्षा बलों और हमलावरों के बीच लंबे समय तक गोलीबारी होती रही।
हमले के शुरुआती घंटों में मृतकों की संख्या कम बताई गई थी, लेकिन राहत और तलाशी अभियान आगे बढ़ने के साथ आंकड़ा बढ़ता गया।
घटनास्थल से घायलों को निकालकर आसपास के अस्पतालों में पहुंचाया गया, जबकि सुरक्षा बलों ने पूरे परिसर को घेरकर तलाशी अभियान चलाया।
जिस मस्जिद को निशाना बनाया गया, वह एक बड़े पुलिस परिसर के अंदर स्थित थी। इसी परिसर में स्पेशल ब्रांच की खुफिया इकाई और काउंटर टेररिज्म डिपार्टमेंट से जुड़े कार्यालय तथा सुरक्षा कर्मियों के आवास भी मौजूद थे।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, आत्मघाती हमलावर विस्फोटकों से भरे वाहन के साथ पुलिस परिसर में पहुंचा और विस्फोट कर दिया।
इसके बाद हथियारबंद हमलावरों ने परिसर के अंदर आगे बढ़ने का प्रयास किया, जिसके चलते पुलिस और अन्य सुरक्षा बलों के साथ भीषण मुठभेड़ शुरू हो गई।
विस्फोट इतना शक्तिशाली था कि परिसर की कई संरचनाओं को भारी नुकसान पहुंचा। मस्जिद और आसपास के हिस्सों में मलबा फैल गया।
धमाके के बाद बचाव दलों ने घटनास्थल पर पहुंचकर घायलों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकालने और अस्पताल पहुंचाने का काम शुरू किया।
सुरक्षा बलों ने परिसर के भीतर व्यापक तलाशी अभियान चलाया। राहत कर्मियों ने संभावित पीड़ितों की तलाश की, जबकि सुरक्षाकर्मियों ने हमलावरों के खिलाफ अभियान जारी रखा। कई घंटे तक चले गतिरोध के बाद सुरक्षा अभियान समाप्त किया गया।
इस हमले ने खैबर पख्तूनख्वा में बढ़ती सुरक्षा चुनौतियों को फिर सामने ला दिया है।
अफगानिस्तान की सीमा से लगे इस क्षेत्र में पुलिस, सैन्यकर्मियों और सरकारी प्रतिष्ठानों को निशाना बनाकर पहले भी कई हमले हो चुके हैं।
हमले के तुरंत बाद किसी संगठन की ओर से इसकी स्पष्ट जिम्मेदारी सामने नहीं आई। हमलावरों की पहचान और हमले के पीछे की पूरी साजिश का पता लगाने के लिए जांच जारी रही।
अधिकारी घटनास्थल को हुए नुकसान का आकलन करने के साथ-साथ मृतकों और घायलों की अंतिम संख्या की भी पुष्टि कर रहे हैं। पूरे घटनाक्रम की जांच के बाद हमले से जुड़े अन्य तथ्यों के सामने आने की उम्मीद है।
