Leaked Audio Purportedly Links Goldy Brar to Nijjar Killing as India-Canada Row Fades
A purported conversation attributed to gangster Goldy Brar has revived attention to the 2023 killing of Khalistan Tiger Force leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, even as Canadian investigators say they found no evidence implicating Indian officials.
A purported leaked audio recording has brought a fresh twist to the investigation into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Khalistan Tiger Force leader who was shot dead in Canada in June 2023.
In the audio clip, gangster Goldy Brar is allegedly heard claiming that he and members of his network were responsible for Nijjar’s murder.
The authenticity of the recording and the alleged claim would require independent verification.
The alleged conversation is reported to have taken place between Brar and Paramjit Singh Pamma, a figure associated with the Khalistani separatist movement.
In the purported recording, Brar is heard offering his version of the reasons behind the killing.
According to the reported conversation, Nijjar was accused by Brar of supporting people allegedly involved in drawing teenagers into drug trafficking.
Brar allegedly claimed that young people had been pressured or manipulated into selling narcotics and acting as informants.
He reportedly presented these allegations as the reason why Nijjar was targeted, claiming that he and his associates decided to act against him.
Nijjar was killed outside a Sikh cultural centre in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023.
His death later became the centre of one of the most serious diplomatic disputes in recent years between India and Canada.
The diplomatic confrontation intensified after then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly alleged that there could be a connection between agents of the Indian government and the killing.
New Delhi strongly rejected the accusation, repeatedly describing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
India has consistently maintained that it had no involvement in Nijjar’s death.
The latest reported audio claim comes against the backdrop of developments in the Canadian investigation that appear to have weakened allegations directly linking Indian government officials to the murder.
In July this year, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said its investigation had not produced evidence showing that Indian officials were involved in Nijjar’s killing.
Lisa Moreland, deputy commissioner of the RCMP, said the organised crime investigation, including the charges and indictments that followed, did not establish the involvement of Indian government officials.
The investigation had already resulted in charges against individuals in Canada in connection with the case, but the RCMP’s statement was significant because it addressed one of the central political allegations that had strained relations between New Delhi and Ottawa.
Since Trudeau left office, relations between India and Canada have gradually shown signs of recovery.
Law-enforcement agencies from the two countries began engaging with each other last year, marking an attempt to restore institutional cooperation.
Diplomatic engagement also gathered momentum when Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the margins of the G7 summit in Kananaskis in June last year.
The subsequent move towards appointing High Commissioners-designate to Ottawa and New Delhi has further been seen as an indication that both governments are seeking to rebuild normal diplomatic channels.
The purported Goldy Brar recording, however, has once again focused attention on the circumstances surrounding Nijjar’s death.
If authenticated, the recording could add another dimension to the narrative around the killing. But the contents of the clip, including the allegations made against Nijjar and the claim of responsibility, remain subject to verification.
For India and Canada, the case continues to carry political and diplomatic significance.
The criminal investigation into Nijjar’s killing and the larger debate over responsibility have played a major role in shaping relations between the two countries over the past several years.
