Argentina captain and football superstar Lionel Messi was reportedly the target of multiple serious security threats during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including alleged plans involving explosives, according to a leaked police dossier cited by Spanish media.
The documents, reportedly compiled through the International Police Cooperation Center (IPCC) under coordination with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), detail a series of bomb threats, stalking incidents, death threats and online abuse directed at players, referees and national teams during the tournament.
One of the most serious incidents reportedly occurred before Argentina’s June 28 group-stage fixture against Jordan in Texas.
According to the dossier, a man contacted Dallas airport authorities and claimed that he and two other people were travelling towards the stadium carrying homemade explosives and an AR-15 rifle.
He allegedly threatened to attack police personnel and players from both teams and specifically mentioned Messi.
A separate threat emerged online during Argentina’s July 7 round-of-16 encounter against Egypt in Atlanta.
An X user reportedly claimed that he was entering the stadium with four bombs strapped to his body and intended to attack Messi.
The threat prompted a major security response.
Explosives specialists, canine teams and K-9 officers were deployed to conduct searches of the stadium during and following the match, according to reports based on the police material.
No attack was reported.
The dossier also describes a separate bomb alert on the same day, when an individual allegedly told police that three explosive devices had been placed in rubbish bins inside the stadium.
Security personnel subsequently carried out extensive checks.
Ronaldo, Mbappe among other stars targeted
Messi was not the only high-profile footballer whose security became a concern during the tournament.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly faced repeated incidents involving overzealous or intrusive followers.
Authorities investigated cases involving individuals seeking information about his accommodation in Houston and attempts to get close to him, including an alleged effort by a fan to enter an elevator with the player.
France forward Kylian Mbappe also faced hostility. He was reportedly subjected to xenophobic abuse following a confrontation with Paraguay’s goalkeeper.
After France eliminated Paraguay from the competition on July 4, supporters in Paraguay were also reported to have burned an effigy depicting the French star.
Other players were allegedly threatened following incidents on the pitch. Norway international Alexander Sorloth and his wife reportedly received threats after the striker missed a scoring opportunity.
Colombian midfielder Jaminton Campaz and French defender Lucas Digne were also reportedly subjected to threats linked to incidents during matches.
Referee received thousands of threatening messages
French referee François Letexier was another prominent target of abuse after Argentina defeated Egypt in a controversial round-of-16 encounter in Atlanta on July 7.
According to the police dossier cited in Spanish reports, Letexier received more than 6,000 threatening messages through his personal WhatsApp account following the match.
Security measures were subsequently strengthened around the referee and his family in France.
VAR assistant referee Willy Delajod was also reportedly targeted.
The incidents highlighted the security challenges faced by authorities during a tournament that brought together millions of spectators, international teams and some of the world’s most recognisable sporting personalities.
The IPCC, operating with US federal agencies and law-enforcement bodies from participating countries, reportedly monitored terrorism-related alerts, threats against players and officials, disorderly supporters and other security incidents throughout the World Cup.
The reported disclosures underscore the scale of the security operation surrounding the tournament and the increasingly serious nature of threats targeting high-profile athletes via both physical and digital channels.

एक लीक पुलिस दस्तावेज के हवाले से स्पेनिश मीडिया में प्रकाशित रिपोर्टों के मुताबिक, मेसी को निशाना बनाकर विस्फोटक हमले की धमकियां भी दी गई थीं।
रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, अंतरराष्ट्रीय पुलिस सहयोग केंद्र (IPCC) के दस्तावेज अमेरिकी फेडरल ब्यूरो ऑफ इन्वेस्टिगेशन (FBI) के समन्वय में तैयार सुरक्षा निगरानी से जुड़े थे।
इनमें खिलाड़ियों, रेफरी और राष्ट्रीय टीमों के खिलाफ बम धमकी, पीछा करने, जान से मारने की धमकी तथा ऑनलाइन दुर्व्यवहार के कई मामलों का उल्लेख है।
सबसे गंभीर घटनाओं में से एक अर्जेंटीना और जॉर्डन के बीच 28 जून को टेक्सास में खेले गए मुकाबले से पहले सामने आई।
दस्तावेज के मुताबिक, एक व्यक्ति ने डलास एयरपोर्ट से संपर्क कर दावा किया कि वह दो अन्य लोगों के साथ स्टेडियम की ओर जा रहा है और उनके पास घर में बनाए गए बम तथा एआर-15 राइफल है।
उसने पुलिसकर्मियों और दोनों टीमों के खिलाड़ियों को निशाना बनाने की बात कही और विशेष रूप से मेसी का नाम लिया।
7 जुलाई को अटलांटा में अर्जेंटीना और मिस्र के बीच राउंड ऑफ 16 मुकाबले के दौरान सोशल मीडिया पर भी मेसी को निशाना बनाकर धमकी दी गई।
रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, एक्स पर एक यूजर ने दावा किया कि वह स्टेडियम में प्रवेश करने वाला है और उसके शरीर पर बंधे चार बम हैं, जिनसे वह मेसी को निशाना बनाएगा।
इस धमकी के बाद स्टेडियम में सुरक्षा व्यवस्था कड़ी कर दी गई। विस्फोटक विशेषज्ञों, प्रशिक्षित कुत्तों और K-9 अधिकारियों ने स्टेडियम की व्यापक तलाशी ली।
मैच के दौरान और उसके बाद भी सुरक्षा जांच जारी रही। हालांकि, किसी हमले की सूचना नहीं मिली।
इसी दिन एक अन्य व्यक्ति ने कथित तौर पर पुलिस को फोन कर दावा किया कि स्टेडियम के तीन कूड़ेदानों में बम रखे गए हैं। इसके बाद सुरक्षा एजेंसियों ने परिसर की विस्तृत जांच की।

अर्जेंटीना और मिस्र के बीच 7 जुलाई को अटलांटा में खेले गए विवादास्पद राउंड ऑफ 16 मुकाबले के बाद फ्रांसीसी रेफरी फ्रांस्वा लेटेक्सियर भी गंभीर ऑनलाइन उत्पीड़न के निशाने पर आ गए।
स्पेनिश रिपोर्टों में उद्धृत पुलिस दस्तावेज के अनुसार, लेटेक्सियर को उनके निजी व्हाट्सऐप नंबर पर 6,000 से अधिक धमकी भरे संदेश भेजे गए।
इसके बाद फ्रांस में रेफरी और उनके परिवार की सुरक्षा बढ़ाई गई। VAR सहायक रेफरी विली डेलाजोद को भी कथित तौर पर धमकियां मिलीं।

रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, IPCC ने अमेरिकी संघीय एजेंसियों तथा विश्व कप में भाग लेने वाले देशों की कानून-प्रवर्तन एजेंसियों के साथ मिलकर आतंकवाद संबंधी अलर्ट, खिलाड़ियों और अधिकारियों के खिलाफ धमकियों, उपद्रवी प्रशंसकों तथा अन्य सुरक्षा घटनाओं पर नजर रखी।
लीक दस्तावेजों में सामने आए ये मामले यह भी दर्शाते हैं कि दुनिया के सबसे चर्चित खिलाड़ियों को निशाना बनाने वाली धमकियां अब केवल स्टेडियम तक सीमित नहीं हैं, बल्कि सोशल मीडिया और डिजिटल प्लेटफॉर्म के जरिए भी तेजी से सामने आ रही हैं।
