Student unrest at Lovely Professional University in Phagwara escalated into violence following an allegation involving a female student. Police announced a special probe as the highway was blocked.

PHAGWARA: What began as anger among students over an allegation involving a female student at Lovely Professional University developed into a major overnight law-and-order situation, forcing police to intervene and disrupting traffic on one of Punjab’s busy highway stretches.

The agitation gathered momentum inside the Phagwara campus before spilling outside the university gates.

By the early hours of Sunday, students had gathered in large numbers, with the protest later resulting in damage to property and the burning of some objects, according to reports.

The disruption became particularly serious when protesters moved onto the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway and stopped vehicles. Traffic was affected in both directions, leaving motorists stuck in long queues.

Police seek to establish what happened.

The immediate trigger was information circulating among students about an alleged sexual assault involving a female student. Students claimed the incident had occurred several days earlier and questioned why, in their view, action had not been taken.

Police subsequently registered a case against an unidentified person after recording statements from students.

However, senior officers stressed that the allegations were still being verified. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jalandhar Range, Naveen Singla said investigators would establish the facts through evidence rather than relying on accounts circulating among students or online.

The police response included plans for a Special Investigation Team, with forensic and technical evidence to be examined as part of the inquiry.

Students seek transparency

One of the immediate demands from protesters was access to the FIR. Students told police that they wanted to see the formal complaint before agreeing to end their road blockade.

During discussions at the campus, Singla assured them that a copy would be provided. He also said student representatives would be associated with the investigation.

The move was aimed at addressing concerns raised by students while allowing investigators to proceed with the inquiry.

Night-long agitation causes traffic chaos.

The protest intensified during the night as students from different residential blocks joined the gathering.

Around 2 am, the crowd moved towards the university’s principal entrance. Footage recorded inside the campus subsequently appeared on social media, showing the scale of the unrest.

The situation later extended beyond university premises. At roughly 4 am, the Jalandhar-Phagwara highway was blocked.

The consequences were immediate. Vehicles travelling towards Jalandhar and Ludhiana were caught in lengthy queues, while commuters using the Delhi-Amritsar route also faced delays.

Senior police officials, including Kapurthala SSP Gaurav Toora, reached the area as authorities attempted to restore normal movement and speak with the students.

LPU disputes claims circulating among students

While police began examining the allegations, the university adopted a different position on the information spreading through the campus.

LPU Registrar Dr Monica Gulati said the institution did not find truth in the rumours being circulated and urged students and parents not to forward or amplify information that had not been verified.

The university asked members of the public to rely on its official communications for updates.

The contrasting accounts mean that the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident remain subject to investigation.

Hostel safety becomes a wider issue.

As the confrontation continued, students raised concerns extending beyond the alleged incident.

Questions were also raised about security arrangements in university accommodation, covering both male and female hostels.

Among the demands was a request for women personnel to be assigned to the girls’ hostel. Singla indicated that the demand would be taken up with the university.

A meeting involving university officials and student representatives was planned for Sunday to discuss the broader list of grievances.

Police said hostel security would also be examined.

Earlier death of student also raised

During his conversation with students, the DIG was also told about the death of another female student at the university approximately two weeks earlier.

Singla said the student was from Telangana and that police had already initiated proceedings concerning the death, which had been treated as an unnatural death.

According to the police, the student’s family had travelled to the university following the incident.

Investigators have taken possession of her mobile phone and sent it for forensic examination. The findings will be considered before any further decision is taken.

Singla said that evidence suggesting foul play would trigger appropriate legal action and that the police would also act on credible information indicating possible wrongdoing.

LPU protest follows another Punjab campus agitation

The latest unrest at LPU came shortly after another student demonstration at Chitkara University in Rajpura.

That protest was linked to claims concerning two female students reported missing.

The back-to-back campus protests have brought renewed attention to student concerns about safety, hostel administration and the handling of complaints at private universities in Punjab.

For now, the LPU case remains under investigation, with police attempting to establish the facts behind the original allegation while university officials seek to prevent the spread of unverified information.

रात के दौरान छात्रों की संख्या लगातार बढ़ती गई। प्रदर्शन के दौरान परिसर में कुछ संपत्ति को नुकसान पहुंचाने और वस्तुओं में आग लगाए जाने की भी खबर सामने आई। बाद में बड़ी संख्या में छात्रों ने विश्वविद्यालय के बाहर सड़क पर पहुंचकर यातायात रोक दिया।

सोशल मीडिया पर फैली जानकारी बनी विवाद की वजह

विरोध की शुरुआत उस जानकारी के फैलने के बाद हुई जिसमें एक महिला छात्रा से कथित यौन उत्पीड़न का आरोप लगाया गया था।

कुछ छात्रों का कहना था कि घटना कई दिन पहले हुई थी और विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन ने मामले पर पर्याप्त कार्रवाई नहीं की। इसी मुद्दे को लेकर छात्रों ने जवाबदेही और कार्रवाई की मांग शुरू कर दी।

मामला पुलिस तक पहुंचने के बाद अज्ञात व्यक्ति के खिलाफ FIR दर्ज की गई। हालांकि पुलिस ने यह भी स्पष्ट किया कि आरोपों की वास्तविकता की जांच अभी जारी है।

जालंधर रेंज के DIG नवीन सिंगला ने कहा कि जांच में सोशल मीडिया या मौखिक चर्चाओं के बजाय उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों के आधार पर घटनाक्रम स्थापित किया जाएगा।

विशेष जांच दल से होगी पड़ताल

पुलिस ने छात्रों को भरोसा दिलाया कि मामले की जांच के लिए स्पेशल इन्वेस्टिगेशन टीम (SIT) गठित की जाएगी।

जांच में फोरेंसिक सामग्री के साथ-साथ तकनीकी और डिजिटल साक्ष्यों को भी देखा जाएगा। पुलिस ने यह भी कहा कि छात्र प्रतिनिधियों को जांच प्रक्रिया से जोड़े जाने पर विचार किया जाएगा।

छात्रों की एक प्रमुख मांग FIR की प्रति उपलब्ध कराना थी। उनका कहना था कि जब तक उन्हें शिकायत की प्रति नहीं मिलती, वे सड़क से अपना विरोध समाप्त नहीं करेंगे।

पुलिस अधिकारियों ने उन्हें FIR की प्रति देने का आश्वासन दिया।

आधी रात के बाद बढ़ता गया तनाव

रात लगभग दो बजे विश्वविद्यालय के विभिन्न हॉस्टलों से छात्र मुख्य प्रवेश द्वार की तरफ जुटने लगे।

परिसर के भीतर की तस्वीरें और वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर सामने आने लगे। जैसे-जैसे भीड़ बढ़ी, पुलिस के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी भी मौके पर पहुंचने लगे।

करीब चार बजे प्रदर्शन विश्वविद्यालय की सीमा से बाहर निकल आया और जालंधर-फगवाड़ा हाईवे पर यातायात बाधित कर दिया गया।

सड़क के दोनों ओर वाहनों की लंबी कतारें लग गईं। जालंधर और लुधियाना की ओर जाने वाले यात्रियों के अलावा दिल्ली-अमृतसर मार्ग पर सफर कर रहे लोगों को भी काफी परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ा।

कपूरथला के SSP गौरव तूरा समेत वरिष्ठ अधिकारी मौके पर पहुंचे और छात्रों से बातचीत कर स्थिति सामान्य करने की कोशिश की।

विश्वविद्यालय ने कहा- अपुष्ट बातों पर भरोसा न करें

उधर, विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन ने छात्रों के बीच फैल रही सूचनाओं पर अलग रुख अपनाया।

LPU की रजिस्ट्रार डॉ. मोनिका गुलाटी ने कहा कि वर्तमान में प्रसारित की जा रही अफवाहों में कोई सत्यता नहीं है। उन्होंने छात्रों, अभिभावकों और आम लोगों से बिना पुष्टि के किसी सूचना को साझा या आगे प्रसारित नहीं करने की अपील की।

विश्वविद्यालय ने कहा कि मामले से संबंधित आधिकारिक जानकारी के लिए उसके अधिकृत संचार माध्यमों का इस्तेमाल किया जाना चाहिए।

इससे मामले की तस्वीर फिलहाल दो अलग-अलग दावों के बीच बनी हुई है—पुलिस आरोपों की जांच कर रही है, जबकि विश्वविद्यालय ने सोशल मीडिया और परिसर में फैल रही अफवाहों को खारिज किया है।

छात्रों ने हॉस्टल सुरक्षा का मुद्दा भी उठाया

विरोध प्रदर्शन के दौरान छात्रों ने कई अन्य समस्याएं भी पुलिस और विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन के सामने रखीं।

इनमें हॉस्टलों की सुरक्षा व्यवस्था, खासकर लड़कियों के हॉस्टल में महिला कर्मचारियों की मौजूदगी का मुद्दा प्रमुख था।

छात्रों की मांग थी कि गर्ल्स हॉस्टल में महिला स्टाफ की पर्याप्त तैनाती हो। DIG सिंगला ने संकेत दिया कि इस मांग पर विश्वविद्यालय के साथ चर्चा की जाएगी।

रविवार को विश्वविद्यालय प्रबंधन और छात्र प्रतिनिधियों के बीच बैठक प्रस्तावित की गई थी। इसमें हॉस्टल सुरक्षा समेत अन्य शिकायतों पर बातचीत होनी थी।

छात्रा की मौत का मामला भी बातचीत में उठा

प्रदर्शनकारियों से बातचीत के दौरान करीब दो सप्ताह पहले विश्वविद्यालय में हुई एक अन्य छात्रा की मौत का मुद्दा भी सामने आया।

DIG सिंगला के अनुसार, मृत छात्रा तेलंगाना की रहने वाली थी और पुलिस ने उसकी अप्राकृतिक मौत के संबंध में कार्रवाई शुरू की थी।

घटना के बाद उसके माता-पिता विश्वविद्यालय पहुंचे थे।

पुलिस ने छात्रा का मोबाइल फोन अपने कब्जे में लेकर फोरेंसिक जांच के लिए भेजा है। जांच रिपोर्ट आने के बाद उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों के आधार पर आगे की कार्रवाई तय की जाएगी।

सिंगला ने कहा कि यदि जांच में किसी तरह की गड़बड़ी या आपराधिक हस्तक्षेप के प्रमाण मिलते हैं, तो कानून के अनुसार कार्रवाई की जाएगी। विश्वसनीय सूचना मिलने पर भी पुलिस उसे जांच का हिस्सा बनाएगी।

चितकारा यूनिवर्सिटी में प्रदर्शन के बाद LPU में बवाल

LPU में हुआ प्रदर्शन पंजाब की एक अन्य निजी यूनिवर्सिटी में छात्र आंदोलन के ठीक एक दिन बाद सामने आया।

राजपुरा की चितकारा यूनिवर्सिटी में दो छात्राओं के कथित तौर पर लापता होने को लेकर छात्रों ने प्रदर्शन किया था।

लगातार सामने आए इन घटनाक्रमों ने निजी विश्वविद्यालयों में छात्र सुरक्षा, हॉस्टल प्रबंधन और शिकायतों के निपटारे से जुड़े सवालों को फिर चर्चा में ला दिया है।

फिलहाल LPU मामले में पुलिस जांच आगे बढ़ रही है। जांच एजेंसियां कथित घटना के वास्तविक तथ्यों को स्थापित करने की कोशिश कर रही हैं, जबकि विश्वविद्यालय प्रशासन छात्रों और अभिभावकों से अपुष्ट सूचनाओं पर भरोसा नहीं करने की अपील कर रहा है।
