Lucknow Charbagh Kidnapping Case: Five-Month-Old Baby Rescued After 20 Days, Woman Held Over Suspected Child Trafficking Link
Relief finally reached a family whose five-month-old daughter had disappeared from the bustling Charbagh Railway Station nearly three weeks ago.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) successfully rescued the infant unharmed on Sunday and reunited her with her parents after arresting a 38-year-old woman suspected of abducting the child with the intention of selling her through an alleged child trafficking network.
Woman Arrested While Carrying the Baby, Trafficking Angle Under Investigation
Police identified the arrested woman as Chanda Devi, who was taken into custody after officers found the baby in her possession.
During preliminary interrogation, she reportedly claimed that she had kidnapped the child because she was unable to have children of her own.
Investigators, however, said the evidence collected so far suggests that the case may be linked to a broader child trafficking operation rather than a purely personal motive.
Police Suspect Organised Network Behind the Crime
Providing details of the investigation, Railway Superintendent of Police Rohit Mishra said preliminary findings indicate that the accused allegedly targeted infants at crowded locations such as railway stations and interstate bus terminals before transporting them to major metropolitan cities.
According to him, investigators suspect that children were intended to be taken to places including Mumbai and Delhi for illegal sale.
He added that police are examining whether Chanda Devi was working on behalf of an organised trafficking syndicate, although no associate has been identified at this stage.
Nearly 400 CCTV Clips Helped Investigators Crack the Case
A painstaking review of surveillance footage ultimately led investigators to the accused. Police examined almost 400 CCTV recordings, tracing the woman’s movements from the moment she was seen loitering around Charbagh Railway Station until she left the premises carrying the infant.
SP Rohit Mishra said the investigation’s first lead emerged from CCTV footage, and the decisive breakthrough also came through the same surveillance network.
Family Was Returning From Karnataka When Crime Took Place
According to investigators, the infant’s parents, originally from Uttar Pradesh but employed in Karnataka, reached Charbagh Railway Station on June 15 while travelling with their daughter.
As they waited on Platforms 8 and 9, the accused allegedly approached the family, gained their confidence through casual conversation, and remained with them for some time.
Baby Allegedly Taken Away While Parents Slept
Police said that after the family finished dinner and fell asleep around 1 am, the woman allegedly seized the opportunity to quietly pick up the sleeping infant before leaving the station unnoticed.
Investigators believe she immediately boarded a bus and transported the child to her residence, where the baby remained until the rescue operation was conducted on Sunday.
Police Doubt Accused’s Claim of Wanting to Raise the Child
During questioning, Chanda Devi reportedly told investigators that she intended to raise the baby as her own because she had been unable to conceive after marriage.
However, police said this explanation does not correspond with the evidence gathered during the investigation, and officers continue to treat the suspected trafficking angle as the primary line of inquiry.
Personal Background Also Under Scanner
Investigators revealed that the accused had entered into two marriages and was presently living in a live-in relationship with another man.
Police further stated that her husband, who reportedly works as a labourer in Farrukhabad, did not know about the alleged kidnapping or any criminal activities linked to the case.
Judicial Custody Ordered After Case Registered Under BNS
Following the abduction, the GRP Charbagh registered an FIR under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
After her arrest, the accused was produced before the court and has since been sent to judicial custody, while investigators continue to probe possible links with a larger child trafficking network.

लगभग बीस दिनों तक चिंता और अनिश्चितता झेलने के बाद पांच माह की बच्ची आखिरकार अपने माता-पिता की गोद में लौट आई। चारबाग रेलवे स्टेशन से अपहृत हुई इस मासूम को सरकारी रेलवे पुलिस (जीआरपी) ने रविवार को सुरक्षित बरामद कर लिया।
कार्रवाई के दौरान 38 वर्षीय महिला को गिरफ्तार किया गया, जिस पर बच्ची का अपहरण कर उसे कथित तौर पर मानव तस्करी गिरोह के माध्यम से बेचने की साजिश रचने का संदेह है।
बच्ची के साथ पकड़ी गई महिला, मानव तस्करी की आशंका गहराई
गिरफ्तार महिला की पहचान चंदा देवी के रूप में हुई है। पुलिस ने उसे बच्ची के साथ हिरासत में लिया। प्रारंभिक पूछताछ में उसने दावा किया कि संतान न होने के कारण वह बच्ची को अपने पास रखना चाहती थी।
हालांकि जांच अधिकारियों का कहना है कि अब तक मिले साक्ष्य उसके इस दावे का समर्थन नहीं करते और मामला किसी बड़े मानव तस्करी नेटवर्क से जुड़ा हो सकता है।
संगठित गिरोह से जुड़े होने की संभावना खंगाल रही पुलिस
मामले की जानकारी देते हुए रेलवे पुलिस अधीक्षक रोहित मिश्रा ने बताया कि शुरुआती जांच में संकेत मिले हैं कि आरोपी भीड़भाड़ वाले रेलवे स्टेशनों और बस अड्डों से छोटे बच्चों को निशाना बनाती थी।
पुलिस को आशंका है कि बच्चों को मुंबई और दिल्ली जैसे महानगरों में ले जाकर अवैध रूप से बेचा जाता था। उन्होंने कहा कि यह पता लगाया जा रहा है कि आरोपी किसी संगठित मानव तस्करी गिरोह के लिए काम कर रही थी या नहीं। फिलहाल उसके किसी सहयोगी की पुष्टि नहीं हुई है।
करीब 400 सीसीटीवी फुटेज ने सुलझाई पूरी गुत्थी
इस सनसनीखेज मामले का खुलासा आधुनिक निगरानी प्रणाली की मदद से संभव हो सका। जांच टीम ने लगभग 400 सीसीटीवी फुटेज का बारीकी से विश्लेषण किया।
कैमरों में आरोपी को पहले चारबाग स्टेशन पर घूमते हुए और बाद में बच्ची को लेकर स्टेशन से निकलते हुए देखा गया। एसपी रोहित मिश्रा ने बताया कि जांच की पहली महत्वपूर्ण कड़ी भी सीसीटीवी से मिली और अंतिम सफलता भी इन्हीं फुटेज के आधार पर हासिल हुई।
कर्नाटक से लौट रहा था परिवार, स्टेशन पर हुई मुलाकात
पुलिस के अनुसार बच्ची के माता-पिता मूल रूप से उत्तर प्रदेश के रहने वाले हैं और रोजगार के सिलसिले में कर्नाटक में काम करते हैं। 15 जून को वे अपनी पांच माह की बेटी के साथ चारबाग रेलवे स्टेशन पहुंचे थे।
प्लेटफॉर्म संख्या 8 और 9 पर ट्रेन का इंतजार करते समय आरोपी महिला ने परिवार से बातचीत शुरू की और धीरे-धीरे उनका विश्वास जीत लिया।
रात में सोते समय गोद से उठाकर ले गई मासूम
जांच में सामने आया कि रात करीब एक बजे, जब भोजन करने के बाद पूरा परिवार गहरी नींद में था, तब आरोपी ने मौके का फायदा उठाकर बच्ची को चुपचाप उठा लिया और स्टेशन से बाहर निकल गई।
पुलिस के अनुसार वह बस के जरिए अपने घर पहुंची, जहां रविवार को छापेमारी के दौरान बच्ची सुरक्षित बरामद कर ली गई।
आरोपी की दलील पर पुलिस को नहीं हुआ भरोसा
पूछताछ के दौरान महिला ने कहा कि विवाह के बाद उसे संतान नहीं हुई, इसलिए वह बच्ची को अपनी बेटी की तरह पालना चाहती थी।
लेकिन जांच अधिकारियों का कहना है कि उपलब्ध साक्ष्य इस कहानी से मेल नहीं खाते। फिलहाल पुलिस मानव तस्करी के पहलू को ही जांच का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण आधार मानकर आगे बढ़ रही है।
व्यक्तिगत जीवन की भी हो रही जांच
पुलिस जांच में यह भी सामने आया कि आरोपी की दो बार शादी हो चुकी थी और वर्तमान में वह एक अन्य व्यक्ति के साथ लिव-इन संबंध में रह रही थी।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक फर्रुखाबाद में मजदूरी करने वाले उसके पति को कथित अपराध की कोई जानकारी नहीं थी।
बीएनएस की धाराओं में मुकदमा दर्ज, न्यायिक हिरासत में भेजी गई आरोपी
अपहरण की घटना के बाद जीआरपी चारबाग ने भारतीय न्याय संहिता (बीएनएस) की संबंधित धाराओं के तहत मामला दर्ज किया था।
गिरफ्तारी के बाद आरोपी को अदालत में पेश किया गया, जहां से उसे न्यायिक हिरासत में भेज दिया गया। पुलिस अब इस पूरे प्रकरण में संभावित मानव तस्करी गिरोह की भूमिका की गहन जांच कर रही है।
