Lucknow Fire Tragedy: Final Cries for Help Echo Through KGMU Mortuary as Families Mourn 15 Lives Lost
The atmosphere inside the mortuary of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow was filled with unbearable sorrow on Tuesday.
Distraught parents, siblings and other family members stood in grief, repeatedly recalling the final phone conversations they had with their loved ones who had been trapped inside the blazing commercial building in Aliganj.
Their voices, pleading desperately for rescue, now remain haunting memories for the families left behind.
Fifteen people lost their lives in the devastating fire that engulfed the three-storey building on Monday afternoon.
Most of the deceased were employees of Head Hopper Studios, a company engaged in 3D artwork, animation and video game development and operating from the second floor of the structure.
What began as an ordinary working day turned into an unimaginable catastrophe within minutes.
Among the victims was 23-year-old game designer Sukhmani Singh. His father, Prabhjot Singh, fought back tears as he recounted their last conversation. Around 2 pm, his son called him in panic.
“Papa, please save me,” Sukhmani cried over the phone. He told his father that thick smoke and flames had blocked every possible route and there was simply no way out.
Twenty-seven-year-old Joyneel Chakravorty, another employee at the studio, also made a desperate final call.
According to his relative, Vishwanath Sarkar, Joyneel telephoned his aunt at about 2 pm. Terrified and struggling to remain calm, he told her, “Aunt, we are trapped inside.
Please do something and save us.” Those words, his family says, continue to echo painfully in their minds.
The grieving relatives said they reached the site by around 3 pm and firmly believe that precious lives might have been saved had rescue teams decided earlier to create an entry point by breaking through the wall from the terrace of the neighbouring building.
Vishwanath recalled that the wall was demolished while they were still speaking to Joyneel on the phone. For the family, those agonising moments have become impossible to forget.
Kalpana Srivastava, the mother of 25-year-old victim Aditya Srivastava, remembered seeing several young men and women desperately trying to escape by climbing onto an external pipe attached to the building.
Some managed to jump to safety, but her son could not make it out alive.
“Our last conversation with Aditya was around one in the afternoon,” she said in a trembling voice. “Some of his friends jumped from the building and survived, but my son remained trapped inside.”
Kalpana said Aditya had joined the animation centre only about six weeks ago and was earning a monthly salary of Rs 9,000. Struggling to understand how such a tragedy could occur, she questioned the authorities over the safety standards of the establishment.
“I only want to know how a place without proper ventilation, emergency exits and adequate safety arrangements was allowed to function,” she said.
Aditya belonged to a family from the neighbouring district of Sitapur. His father is a practising lawyer, and the family had hoped that the young man’s first job would become the beginning of a bright future.
Another victim, Suraj Singh, also worked at the same animation centre and shared accommodation with Joyneel.
According to Vishwanath Sarkar, repeated attempts to contact Suraj’s parents proved unsuccessful because their phones remained switched off, adding another layer of anxiety and uncertainty to the tragedy.
KGMU Vice-Chancellor Sonia Nityanand said that 24 people were brought to the hospital following the incident, of whom 15 had already succumbed by the time they arrived.
She said there were no visible external injuries on the bodies and preliminary findings indicated that all the victims died due to suffocation caused by smoke inhalation. Post-mortem examinations are currently being conducted.
Officials said that seven injured persons were admitted for treatment. Five of them were discharged after receiving medical care, while two survivors—a man and a woman—continue to remain hospitalised with critical injuries.
According to hospital sources, the male survivor suffered multiple fractures after jumping from the building in a desperate attempt to escape the inferno.
His injuries stand as a painful reminder of the terrifying moments faced by those trapped inside the burning structure.

लखनऊ के किंग जॉर्ज मेडिकल यूनिवर्सिटी (केजीएमयू) के शवगृह में मंगलवार को ऐसा माहौल था जिसे शब्दों में बयां करना मुश्किल है। वहां मौजूद माता-पिता, भाई-बहन और अन्य परिजन गहरे शोक में डूबे हुए थे। हर कोई अपने प्रियजनों के साथ हुई आखिरी बातचीत को याद कर रहा था—वे फोन कॉल जिनमें इमारत के भीतर फंसे लोग रोते हुए मदद की गुहार लगा रहे थे। उन आखिरी शब्दों की गूंज अब उनके परिवारों की स्मृतियों में हमेशा के लिए दर्ज हो गई है।
सोमवार दोपहर अलीगंज स्थित तीन मंजिला व्यावसायिक इमारत में लगी भीषण आग में 15 लोगों की जान चली गई। मृतकों में अधिकांश कर्मचारी हेड हॉपर स्टूडियोज के थे, जो दूसरी मंजिल पर संचालित होने वाली एक कंपनी थी और 3डी आर्ट, एनीमेशन तथा वीडियो गेम निर्माण के क्षेत्र में काम करती थी। रोज की तरह शुरू हुआ कार्यदिवस कुछ ही मिनटों में एक भयावह त्रासदी में बदल गया।
मृतकों में 23 वर्षीय गेम डिजाइनर सुखमनी सिंह भी शामिल थे। उनके पिता प्रभजोत सिंह ने भर्राई आवाज में अपने बेटे के साथ हुई अंतिम बातचीत को याद किया। उन्होंने बताया कि करीब दो बजे उनके बेटे का फोन आया था। वह घबराया हुआ था और बार-बार कह रहा था, “पापा, मुझे बचा लीजिए।” उसने बताया कि चारों ओर धुआं और आग फैल चुकी है और बाहर निकलने का कोई रास्ता नहीं बचा है।
सत्ताईस वर्षीय जॉयनील चक्रवर्ती, जो उसी स्टूडियो में कार्यरत थे, ने भी अपनी आखिरी घड़ियों में परिवार से संपर्क किया था। उनके रिश्तेदार विश्वनाथ सरकार के अनुसार, जॉयनील ने लगभग दो बजे अपनी चाची को फोन किया। भय और बेचैनी से भरी आवाज में उसने कहा, “चाची, हम अंदर फंस गए हैं, किसी तरह हमें बचा लीजिए।” परिवार के लिए उसके ये शब्द अब कभी न मिटने वाली पीड़ा बन गए हैं।
परिजनों का कहना है कि वे लगभग तीन बजे घटनास्थल पर पहुंच गए थे। उनका मानना है कि यदि पड़ोसी इमारत की छत से दीवार तोड़कर प्रवेश करने का निर्णय कुछ पहले ले लिया गया होता, तो कई जिंदगियां बचाई जा सकती थीं। विश्वनाथ ने बताया कि जब राहतकर्मी दीवार तोड़ रहे थे, तब तक उनकी जॉयनील से फोन पर बातचीत जारी थी। वह दर्दनाक क्षण अब परिवार की स्मृतियों का स्थायी हिस्सा बन चुका है।
पच्चीस वर्षीय आदित्य श्रीवास्तव की मां कल्पना श्रीवास्तव ने बताया कि उन्होंने कई युवाओं को इमारत के बाहर लगी पाइप के सहारे जान बचाने की कोशिश करते देखा। कुछ लोग नीचे कूदकर अपनी जान बचाने में सफल रहे, लेकिन उनका बेटा बाहर नहीं निकल सका।
उन्होंने नम आंखों से कहा, “आदित्य से हमारी आखिरी बात दोपहर करीब एक बजे हुई थी। उसके कुछ साथी कूदकर बच गए, लेकिन मेरा बेटा अंदर ही फंस गया और बाहर नहीं आ सका।”
कल्पना ने बताया कि आदित्य ने लगभग डेढ़ महीने पहले ही एनीमेशन सेंटर में नौकरी शुरू की थी और उसे प्रतिमाह नौ हजार रुपये वेतन मिलता था। इस दुर्घटना से आहत मां ने सवाल उठाया कि आखिर ऐसी जगह को संचालन की अनुमति कैसे दी गई, जहां पर्याप्त वेंटिलेशन, आपातकालीन निकास और सुरक्षा के बुनियादी इंतजाम तक नहीं थे।
आदित्य का परिवार पड़ोसी जनपद सीतापुर का रहने वाला है। उनके पिता पेशे से अधिवक्ता हैं। परिवार ने उम्मीद की थी कि बेटे की पहली नौकरी उसके उज्ज्वल भविष्य की शुरुआत बनेगी, लेकिन यह सपना अधूरा रह गया।
मृतकों में सूरज सिंह भी शामिल थे, जो उसी एनीमेशन सेंटर में कार्यरत थे और जॉयनील के साथ रहते थे। विश्वनाथ सरकार ने बताया कि सूरज के माता-पिता से संपर्क करने की कई कोशिशें की गईं, लेकिन उनके मोबाइल फोन बंद मिले, जिससे चिंता और बढ़ गई।
केजीएमयू की कुलपति डॉ. सोनिया नित्यानंद ने बताया कि हादसे के बाद कुल 24 लोगों को अस्पताल लाया गया था, जिनमें से 15 को अस्पताल पहुंचने से पहले ही मृत घोषित कर दिया गया। उन्होंने कहा कि शवों पर किसी प्रकार के बाहरी चोट के निशान नहीं मिले हैं और शुरुआती जांच से यह संकेत मिलता है कि सभी की मौत धुएं से दम घुटने के कारण हुई। सभी शवों का पोस्टमॉर्टम कराया जा रहा है।
अधिकारियों के अनुसार, सात घायलों को उपचार के लिए भर्ती कराया गया था। इनमें से पांच लोगों को प्राथमिक चिकित्सा के बाद छुट्टी दे दी गई, जबकि एक पुरुष और एक महिला अब भी अस्पताल में भर्ती हैं और उनकी हालत गंभीर बनी हुई है।
अस्पताल सूत्रों के मुताबिक, पुरुष घायल ने आग की लपटों से बचने के लिए इमारत से छलांग लगा दी थी, जिससे उसके शरीर में कई जगह फ्रैक्चर हो गए। उसकी चोटें उन भयावह परिस्थितियों की गवाही दे रही हैं जिनका सामना आग में फंसे लोगों ने अपनी अंतिम घड़ियों में किया।
