Madhya Pradesh Tragedy: 7 of Odisha Family Among 8 Killed After Car Swept Away Near Nalkheda Temple
The Bhubaneswar family had travelled to Nalkheda during a pilgrimage when their vehicle was caught in a powerful current near the Maa Bagalamukhi Temple.
BHOPAL: A family pilgrimage ended in disaster in Madhya Pradesh’s Agar Malwa district after a vehicle carrying seven members of a Bhubaneswar family was swept away by a rain-fed water channel near the Maa Bagalamukhi Temple in Nalkheda, killing everyone inside.
The victims included three children and two women, along with two other family members.
The eighth person killed in the incident was the taxi driver, identified as Krushna Rajveer.
Police said the group had travelled from Odisha to Madhya Pradesh for a religious trip.
The accident occurred as the vehicle was negotiating the waterlogged crossing near the temple. Torrential rain had caused the seasonal drain to swell, creating a strong current that carried the car away.
The precise circumstances leading to the vehicle entering the flooded stretch are being examined by the police.
The submerged vehicle could not be immediately accessed because of the water flow.
Rescue personnel reached the location and continued operations until the water level fell sufficiently for the car to be recovered.
The bodies were subsequently taken out of the vehicle, according to officials.
The family was from Bhubaneswar’s Jayadev Vihar area and had been on a religious journey that included a visit to Ujjain. They had hired the taxi for the onward trip to Nalkheda.
The journey was also linked to an upcoming family engagement, according to reports from Odisha.
Heavy rainfall had significantly raised water levels in the area.
Reports said Nalkheda received close to four inches of rain in the preceding 24 hours, leaving the drain near the temple swollen and fast-moving.
Agar Malwa Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Soni said investigators were examining whether the vehicle attempted to pass through the flooded section despite the strength of the current.
Authorities are continuing to establish the exact sequence of events surrounding the accident.
News of the deaths prompted a response from the Odisha government.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed his condolences and directed officials to remain in contact with their Madhya Pradesh counterparts to facilitate arrangements for the victims and the return of their remains to Odisha.
The Odisha government has also announced ₹5 lakh assistance for each bereaved family, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each deceased person.
The tragedy has cast a pall over the victims’ neighbourhood in Bhubaneswar, where relatives and residents gathered after news of the accident reached the city.
The incident has also renewed concerns over travel through waterlogged crossings during periods of intense rainfall.

भोपाल: मध्य प्रदेश के आगर मालवा जिले में एक धार्मिक यात्रा उस समय मातम में बदल गई जब नलखेड़ा स्थित मां बगलामुखी मंदिर के पास तेज बहाव वाले बरसाती नाले में एक कार बह गई।
हादसे में भुवनेश्वर के एक ही परिवार के सात सदस्यों और टैक्सी चालक समेत आठ लोगों की मौत हो गई।
मृतकों में तीन बच्चे और दो महिलाएं भी शामिल हैं।
टैक्सी चालक की पहचान कृष्ण राजवीर के रूप में हुई है। पुलिस के अनुसार, ओडिशा से आया परिवार मध्य प्रदेश की धार्मिक यात्रा पर था और उज्जैन से नलखेड़ा की ओर जा रहा था।
बताया गया है कि मंदिर के आसपास बारिश के कारण बरसाती नाले में अचानक पानी का प्रवाह काफी तेज हो गया था।
इसी दौरान वाहन पानी की चपेट में आ गया और तेज धारा उसे अपने साथ बहाकर ले गई। हादसे की परिस्थितियों की पुलिस जांच कर रही है।
पानी का बहाव इतना तेज था कि राहत दल को वाहन तक पहुंचने में कठिनाई हुई। कुछ समय बाद जलस्तर कम होने पर बचाव दल ने कार को बाहर निकाला।
वाहन के भीतर मौजूद सभी लोगों की मौत हो चुकी थी।
पुलिस और स्थानीय रिपोर्टों के मुताबिक, परिवार भुवनेश्वर के जयदेव विहार इलाके का रहने वाला था।
परिवार ने मध्य प्रदेश में धार्मिक स्थलों के दर्शन की योजना बनाई थी और उज्जैन पहुंचने के बाद नलखेड़ा जाने के लिए टैक्सी ली थी।
परिवार में एक आगामी सगाई समारोह को लेकर भी तैयारियां चल रही थीं।
हादसे से पहले क्षेत्र में भारी बारिश हुई थी। रिपोर्टों के अनुसार, नलखेड़ा में पिछले 24 घंटों के दौरान करीब चार इंच बारिश दर्ज की गई, जिसके कारण आसपास के जलस्रोतों और बरसाती नालों में पानी का स्तर तेजी से बढ़ गया था।
आगर मालवा के पुलिस अधीक्षक दिलीप कुमार सोनी के मुताबिक, जांच इस पहलू पर भी की जा रही है कि क्या चालक ने तेज बहाव के बावजूद वाहन को पानी से भरे रास्ते से निकालने की कोशिश की थी।
पुलिस हादसे से जुड़े पूरे घटनाक्रम की जानकारी जुटा रही है।
हादसे की खबर सामने आने के बाद ओडिशा के मुख्यमंत्री मोहन चरण माझी ने शोक व्यक्त किया।
उन्होंने अधिकारियों को मध्य प्रदेश सरकार और स्थानीय प्रशासन के साथ लगातार संपर्क में रहने का निर्देश दिया, ताकि मृतकों के पार्थिव शरीर को सम्मानपूर्वक ओडिशा लाने की व्यवस्था की जा सके।
ओडिशा सरकार ने प्रत्येक मृतक के परिवार को ₹5 लाख की सहायता देने की घोषणा की है।
वहीं प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने प्रधानमंत्री राष्ट्रीय राहत कोष (PMNRF) से प्रत्येक मृतक के निकटतम परिजन को ₹2 लाख की अनुग्रह राशि देने की घोषणा की।
भुवनेश्वर में हादसे की खबर पहुंचने के बाद परिवार के परिचितों और स्थानीय लोगों में शोक की लहर दौड़ गई।
भारी बारिश के दौरान जलमग्न रास्तों और तेज बहाव वाले नालों को पार करने के जोखिम को लेकर यह हादसा एक गंभीर चेतावनी भी बनकर सामने आया है।
