The first glimpse of his transformation for filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s upcoming historical drama has generated considerable curiosity, with Bajpayee appearing almost unrecognisable in the role of Mahatma Gandhi.
The image released on September 6 presents the actor with a completely altered appearance: a shaved head, round spectacles, a simple loincloth and Gandhi’s trademark walking stick.
In one striking frame, he is seen looking away from the camera as other freedom fighters follow behind him, while a backdrop carrying the words “Long Live Mahatma Gandhi” reinforces the period setting.
For Bajpayee, whose career has encompassed an extraordinary range of characters across crime dramas, political stories and deeply personal human narratives, the role represents unexplored territory.
Despite portraying numerous real-life and fictional personalities during his long career, he has never previously played Gandhi on screen.
A physical transformation built around immersion
The resemblance seen in the first look appears to have involved considerably more than prosthetics, costumes and period styling. Bajpayee has reportedly shed a significant amount of weight for the character and adopted a tightly controlled diet and lifestyle while preparing for the part.
Producer Anubhav Sinha has described the actor as being in his “Gandhi zone”, suggesting that the preparation extends beyond his outward appearance.
The transformation points to an attempt to capture not merely Gandhi’s recognisable silhouette but also the physical presence associated with the historical figure.
The casting itself adds another layer of intrigue.
Mishra has chosen an actor celebrated for inhabiting complicated and often morally conflicted characters, placing him in the role of a leader whose influence extended far beyond conventional political power.
The film explores a brief but consequential moment.
Rather than attempting to chronicle Gandhi’s entire life, Mishra’s project focuses on a tightly defined period of only 21 days during the years surrounding India’s independence.

A promise rooted in a family memory
For Sudhir Mishra, the film carries a personal significance that predates its production.
Mishra has recalled that his mother, Durga Devendra Nath Mishra, encountered Gandhi during her childhood. Conversations about Gandhi subsequently remained part of the family’s memories.
Before she died in 2022, Mishra committed to creating a film about Gandhi.
The present project is an outcome of that long-standing promise, giving the historical subject a deeply personal starting point for the filmmaker.
Mishra and Sinha reunite creative strength.
The film brings together filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and producer Anubhav Sinha, two established names associated with socially and politically resonant Hindi cinema.
Mishra, whose filmmaking career spans nearly four decades, has been recognised for films including Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi and Dharavi. Sinha, meanwhile, has backed projects such as Mulk, Article 15 and Thappad.
Veteran performer Saurabh Shukla is also part of the cast in an important role.
Filming is already underway in Lucknow.
The opening schedule is being shot around the Narhi locality near the city zoo, where the production has recreated elements of the 1940s through vintage automobiles, period costumes and old-style signage.
Bajpayee’s Gandhi promises a different kind of historical portrayal
The project is reportedly being referred to by the working title Gandhi and My Mother, although the title has not been officially confirmed.
What has been established is the significance of Bajpayee’s casting: this will be his first portrayal of Mahatma Gandhi.

एक तस्वीर में वह कैमरे से दूसरी दिशा में देखते नजर आते हैं, जबकि पीछे स्वतंत्रता सेनानियों की मौजूदगी और “Long Live Mahatma Gandhi” लिखा हुआ दृश्य फिल्म के दौर की झलक देते हैं।

2022 में अपनी मां के निधन से पहले मिश्रा ने उनसे गांधी पर फिल्म बनाने का वादा किया था। अब वर्षों बाद वह वादा इस परियोजना के जरिए आकार ले रहा है। यही निजी स्मृति फिल्म के ऐतिहासिक विषय को निर्देशक के लिए और अधिक अर्थपूर्ण बनाती है।
सुधीर मिश्रा और अनुभव सिन्हा की जोड़ी पर नजर
फिल्म के पीछे हिंदी सिनेमा के दो अनुभवी नाम एक साथ आए हैं। सुधीर मिश्रा करीब चार दशक से फिल्म निर्माण से जुड़े हैं और हजारों ख्वाहिशें ऐसी तथा धारावी जैसी फिल्मों के लिए जाने जाते हैं।
निर्माता अनुभव सिन्हा भी मुल्क, आर्टिकल 15 और थप्पड़ जैसी चर्चित फिल्मों से जुड़े रहे हैं। वरिष्ठ अभिनेता सौरभ शुक्ला भी इस परियोजना में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहे हैं।
फिल्म की शूटिंग लखनऊ में शुरू हो चुकी है। शुरुआती शेड्यूल शहर के चिड़ियाघर के पास नरही इलाके में फिल्माया जा रहा है। 1940 के दशक का माहौल तैयार करने के लिए पुराने जमाने की कारों, उस दौर के परिधानों और ऐतिहासिक शैली के साइनबोर्ड का इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है।

फिल्म को फिलहाल Gandhi and My Mother के कार्यकारी नाम से संबोधित किए जाने की जानकारी है, हालांकि इस शीर्षक की आधिकारिक पुष्टि नहीं हुई है।
