Massive Heatwave Grips US Ahead of Independence Day Weekend, 120 Million Under Extreme Heat Alert
As several parts of Europe continue to battle an intense spell of extreme heat, the United States is now preparing for a dangerous and long-lasting heatwave expected to impact millions of people this week.
Weather experts have warned that soaring daytime temperatures, oppressive humidity, and unusually warm nights could create hazardous conditions across large parts of the country.
The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued Extreme Heat Warnings affecting nearly 120 million people.
The warning comes just as Americans prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, which this year marks the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions as temperatures continue to rise.
According to the NWS, daytime temperatures are expected to range between 32°C and 40°C, while high humidity will make conditions feel even hotter.
In some areas, the heat index—which combines temperature and humidity—could reach nearly 46°C, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Meteorologists have attributed the upcoming extreme weather to the formation of a heat dome, a weather phenomenon that traps hot air over a region for an extended period.
Forecasts indicate that the most intense conditions will affect the Midwest and the Mississippi Valley between Tuesday and Thursday, before expanding eastward.
As the week progresses, the heatwave is expected to spread across the Ohio Valley and the US East Coast on Thursday, with unusually high temperatures likely to persist through the Independence Day holiday weekend.
Anticipating the severe weather, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has activated the city’s Heat Emergency Plan.
Under the plan, hundreds of cooling centres are scheduled to open across New York City from Wednesday, providing residents with safe, air-conditioned spaces to escape the extreme heat.
Officials in Detroit, Michigan, have also taken preventive measures by opening nearly a dozen air-conditioned recreation centres where residents can seek relief as temperatures climb.
Describing the situation as particularly dangerous, the National Weather Service warned that the prolonged nature of the heatwave makes it more hazardous than short-lived periods of high temperatures.
The agency said the combination of scorching daytime heat, persistently warm nights and several consecutive days of extreme weather could pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.
The weather agency further cautioned that unlike storms or floods, prolonged heatwaves often become deadly gradually.
Because their effects accumulate over time and are not always immediately visible, they remain among the most dangerous weather-related disasters in the United States.

मौसम विशेषज्ञों ने चेतावनी दी है कि इस सप्ताह देश के बड़े हिस्से में अत्यधिक तापमान, उमस भरी हवा और रात के समय भी गर्म मौसम लोगों के लिए गंभीर स्वास्थ्य जोखिम पैदा कर सकता है।
अमेरिकी राष्ट्रीय मौसम सेवा (National Weather Service-NWS) ने करीब 12 करोड़ (120 मिलियन) लोगों के लिए एक्सट्रीम हीट वार्निंग जारी की है।
यह चेतावनी ऐसे समय जारी की गई है जब पूरा देश 4 जुलाई (फोर्थ ऑफ जुलाई) के राष्ट्रीय अवकाश और अमेरिका की स्वतंत्रता की 250वीं वर्षगांठ मनाने की तैयारी कर रहा है। प्रशासन ने लोगों से विशेष सतर्कता बरतने की अपील की है।
एनडब्ल्यूएस के अनुसार, अधिकतम तापमान 32 से 40 डिग्री सेल्सियस के बीच रहने की संभावना है। हालांकि, अत्यधिक नमी के कारण महसूस होने वाला तापमान इससे कहीं अधिक होगा।
कई इलाकों में हीट इंडेक्स लगभग 46 डिग्री सेल्सियस तक पहुंच सकता है, जिससे लू और अन्य गर्मी से जुड़ी बीमारियों का खतरा काफी बढ़ जाएगा।
मौसम वैज्ञानिकों का कहना है कि इस असामान्य गर्मी की मुख्य वजह हीट डोम (Heat Dome) है। यह एक ऐसी मौसमीय स्थिति होती है जिसमें गर्म हवा लंबे समय तक किसी क्षेत्र के ऊपर फंस जाती है।
अनुमान है कि मंगलवार से गुरुवार के बीच इसका सबसे अधिक असर मिडवेस्ट और मिसिसिपी वैली क्षेत्र में देखने को मिलेगा।
इसके बाद यह भीषण गर्मी गुरुवार से ओहायो वैली और अमेरिका के पूर्वी तट (ईस्ट कोस्ट) तक फैल जाएगी तथा स्वतंत्रता दिवस के पूरे अवकाश के दौरान इसका प्रभाव बना रह सकता है।
स्थिति की गंभीरता को देखते हुए न्यूयॉर्क सिटी के मेयर जोहरान ममदानी ने हीट इमरजेंसी प्लान लागू कर दिया है। इसके तहत बुधवार से पूरे शहर में सैकड़ों कूलिंग सेंटर खोले जाएंगे, जहां लोग अत्यधिक गर्मी से राहत पाने के लिए एयर-कंडीशंड वातावरण में ठहर सकेंगे।
वहीं डेट्रॉइट (मिशिगन) प्रशासन ने भी एहतियातन लगभग एक दर्जन एयर-कंडीशंड मनोरंजन केंद्र आम लोगों के लिए खोल दिए हैं, ताकि गर्मी से परेशान नागरिक वहां जाकर राहत महसूस कर सकें।
नेशनल वेदर सर्विस ने चेतावनी दी है कि यह हीटवेव सामान्य गर्मी की तुलना में कहीं अधिक खतरनाक साबित हो सकती है।
एजेंसी के अनुसार, लगातार कई दिनों तक रहने वाला अत्यधिक तापमान, उमस और रात में भी राहत न मिलना लोगों के स्वास्थ्य पर गंभीर असर डाल सकता है, विशेष रूप से बुजुर्गों, बच्चों और पहले से बीमार लोगों पर।
मौसम विभाग ने यह भी कहा कि लंबे समय तक चलने वाली हीटवेव अमेरिका की सबसे घातक प्राकृतिक आपदाओं में से एक मानी जाती है। इसका प्रभाव अचानक नहीं बल्कि धीरे-धीरे बढ़ता है, इसलिए लोग अक्सर इसकी गंभीरता को समय रहते समझ नहीं पाते, जिससे जान का खतरा बढ़ जाता है।
