126 hearings end with guilty verdict against Rajput’s wife and her partner; court to decide punishment separately

MEERUT, September 30: More than a year after a murder investigation uncovered human remains hidden inside a cement-packed plastic drum, a Meerut court on Wednesday found Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla guilty of killing Saurabh Rajput.

The verdict closes the trial phase of one of Meerut’s most closely followed murder cases, which involved 126 court hearings and evidence running into hundreds of pages.

The two convicts joined the proceedings through video conferencing from jail.

The court has not yet determined the punishment. Arguments on sentencing will be taken up separately, with the prosecution seeking the death penalty for both.

For Saurabh’s family, the conviction brought an end to the question of who was responsible for his death but not to the grief surrounding it.

His mother, Renu Rajput, has publicly questioned what led to the killing when the marital relationship could have been ended through legal separation.

From a relationship to a murder investigation

The case began with a marriage that had itself followed a struggle between the couple and their families.

Saurabh and Muskan married in 2016 after leaving home together, according to the prosecution’s account.

Their families eventually accepted the relationship. The couple later established a separate home in Meerut and became parents to a daughter.

Saurabh had earlier worked in the merchant navy before moving into employment in London. He returned to India in February 2025, according to the prosecution, intending to spend time with his wife and daughter around their birthdays.

Within days, he was dead.

Investigators subsequently alleged that Muskan and Shukla had formed a relationship and had jointly planned the killing.

Shukla was known to Muskan from her school days and earned a living through online share trading.

What investigators say happened inside the house

The prosecution’s case centres on the events of March 2025, when Saurabh was at his home in Meerut.

Investigators alleged that he was rendered unconscious after an intoxicating substance was mixed with his food.

Shukla was then allegedly brought to the house, after which Saurabh was killed.

The body was subsequently cut into pieces, according to the prosecution, and placed inside a large blue plastic drum. Cement and other material were used to conceal the remains.

Evidence presented during the trial included testimony concerning the purchase of items allegedly used in the disposal of the body.

Local traders were reported to have identified the sale of a drum, cement, sand and cutting implements to the accused.

The disappearance that triggered suspicion

The alleged concealment initially helped delay discovery of the killing. Investigators said Muskan subsequently left the house with Shukla and travelled to Himachal Pradesh.

According to the police case, activity was deliberately maintained on Saurabh’s social-media account during the trip, creating the impression that he was still alive.

But the explanation did not satisfy Saurabh’s relatives. When he failed to return and could not be contacted, concerns escalated, and a police complaint was lodged by his elder brother Rahul Kumar.

The investigation then shifted towards Muskan and Shukla. Their questioning ultimately led police to the house where investigators discovered the container containing the remains.

The two were arrested in March 2025 and have remained in custody during the investigation and trial.

Evidence built around the container

The blue drum became the most recognisable piece of evidence in the case, but the prosecution did not rely solely on the recovery.

Investigators presented a combination of physical, forensic, technical and circumstantial evidence.

More than 22 prosecution witnesses testified during the proceedings, while the case record included a detailed chargesheet setting out the evidence gathered during the investigation.

Police also sought to preserve the investigation electronically.

Former Meerut SSP Vipin Tada had said that the investigation was videographed and the material uploaded to the eSakshya platform to create a documented record of the proceedings.

Tada is now serving as Additional Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, in Kanpur.

Family now waits for punishment decision.n

With the court having recorded a finding of guilt, the case has entered its sentencing stage.

Saurabh’s family has sought the maximum punishment for both convicts. The prosecution has also pressed for the death penalty.

The court’s next decision will therefore determine the punishment to be imposed. Wednesday’s order establishes the criminal liability of Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla, while the question of sentence remains pending.

मेरठ, 30 सितंबर: एक साल से अधिक समय तक चली कानूनी प्रक्रिया के बाद मेरठ की जिला अदालत ने बुधवार को सौरभ राजपूत हत्याकांड में मुस्कान रस्तोगी और साहिल शुक्ला को दोषी ठहरा दिया। मामला उस समय सुर्खियों में आया था जब पुलिस को एक प्लास्टिक के ड्रम में छिपाए गए सौरभ के अवशेष मिले थे।

दोनों आरोपियों को जेल से वीडियो कॉन्फ्रेंसिंग के जरिए अदालत के सामने पेश किया गया। करीब 13 महीने में इस मामले में 126 सुनवाइयां हुईं और अभियोजन पक्ष की ओर से 22 से अधिक गवाहों के बयान दर्ज किए गए।

अदालत ने बुधवार को दोषसिद्धि का फैसला सुनाया, लेकिन सजा की घोषणा अभी नहीं की गई है। अब अदालत अलग से यह तय करेगी कि दोनों दोषियों को कितनी सजा दी जाए। अभियोजन पक्ष ने दोनों के लिए मृत्युदंड की मांग की है।

सौरभ के परिवार के लिए यह फैसला एक लंबे इंतजार का अंत है, हालांकि बेटे की मौत का दर्द अभी भी बरकरार है। उनकी मां रेनू राजपूत ने इस बात पर सवाल उठाया है कि यदि वैवाहिक संबंधों में समस्या थी तो अलग होने का रास्ता मौजूद था, फिर सौरभ की जान क्यों ली गई।

रिश्ते से शुरू हुआ विवाद कैसे पहुंचा हत्या तक

सौरभ और मुस्कान का विवाह वर्ष 2016 में हुआ था। दोनों ने परिवार की शुरुआती नाराजगी के बावजूद साथ रहने का फैसला किया और बाद में परिजनों ने भी उनके रिश्ते को स्वीकार कर लिया।

शादी के बाद दोनों ने मेरठ में अलग घर बसाया। उनकी एक बेटी भी हुई। सौरभ पहले मर्चेंट नेवी में काम करते थे और बाद में लंदन में नौकरी करने लगे।

फरवरी 2025 में वह भारत लौटे थे। अभियोजन के अनुसार, उनकी यात्रा का मकसद परिवार के साथ समय बिताना और पत्नी तथा बेटी के जन्मदिन मनाना था।

लेकिन घर लौटने के कुछ ही समय बाद सौरभ की हत्या कर दी गई।

जांच के दौरान पुलिस ने आरोप लगाया कि मुस्कान के साहिल शुक्ला से संबंध थे और दोनों ने मिलकर सौरभ को रास्ते से हटाने की योजना बनाई। साहिल और मुस्कान एक-दूसरे को स्कूल के दिनों से जानते थे। साहिल ऑनलाइन शेयर ट्रेडिंग करता था।

घर के भीतर हुई वारदात ने बदला जांच का रुख

अभियोजन की कहानी के मुताबिक सौरभ को पहले नशीला पदार्थ देकर बेहोश किया गया। इसके बाद साहिल को घर बुलाया गया और कथित तौर पर दोनों ने मिलकर सौरभ की हत्या कर दी।

पुलिस के अनुसार, हत्या के बाद शव को कई हिस्सों में काटा गया और एक बड़े नीले प्लास्टिक ड्रम में रखा गया। शव को छिपाने के लिए सीमेंट और अन्य सामग्री का इस्तेमाल किया गया।

मुकदमे के दौरान अभियोजन ने उन दुकानदारों के बयान भी पेश किए जिन्होंने कथित तौर पर ड्रम, सीमेंट, बालू और शव काटने में इस्तेमाल होने वाले औजार बेचे थे। इन बयानों को अभियोजन की परिस्थितिजन्य कड़ी का हिस्सा बनाया गया।

सौरभ के लापता होने से खुलने लगी परतें

शुरुआत में सौरभ के घर से गायब होने की बात को इस तरह पेश करने की कोशिश की गई कि वह कहीं बाहर गए हैं। पुलिस ने आरोप लगाया कि मुस्कान और साहिल के हिमाचल जाने के दौरान सौरभ के सोशल मीडिया अकाउंट पर गतिविधियां भी दिखाई गईं।

लेकिन सौरभ के परिजनों को उनकी गैरमौजूदगी पर संदेह होने लगा। संपर्क नहीं होने पर उनके बड़े भाई राहुल कुमार ने पुलिस से शिकायत की।

इसके बाद जांच का फोकस मुस्कान और साहिल पर गया। पूछताछ के दौरान पुलिस को कई अहम जानकारियां मिलीं और जांच टीम उसी मकान तक पहुंची जहां कथित तौर पर हत्या हुई थी।

वहीं से वह नीला ड्रम बरामद हुआ जिसने पूरे मामले को नया मोड़ दे दिया। बाद में दोनों आरोपियों को मार्च 2025 में गिरफ्तार कर लिया गया।

सिर्फ ड्रम नहीं, कई साक्ष्यों पर टिका अभियोजन का मामला

हालांकि नीला ड्रम इस मामले की सबसे चर्चित पहचान बन गया, लेकिन अभियोजन ने अदालत में केवल शव की बरामदगी पर निर्भर रहने के बजाय कई तरह के साक्ष्य पेश किए।

अभियोजन ने परिस्थितिजन्य, तकनीकी, फोरेंसिक और भौतिक साक्ष्यों को जोड़कर अपनी कहानी अदालत के सामने रखी। सुनवाई के दौरान 22 से अधिक गवाहों के बयान दर्ज किए गए।

जांच की रिकॉर्डिंग के लिए डिजिटल माध्यम का भी इस्तेमाल किया गया। तत्कालीन मेरठ SSP विपिन ताडा ने जांच के दौरान कहा था कि कार्रवाई की वीडियो रिकॉर्डिंग कराई गई और संबंधित सामग्री eSakshya प्लेटफॉर्म पर अपलोड की गई, ताकि जांच से जुड़े साक्ष्यों का डिजिटल रिकॉर्ड सुरक्षित रहे।

विपिन ताडा फिलहाल कानपुर में अपर पुलिस आयुक्त, कानून-व्यवस्था के पद पर तैनात हैं।

अब अदालत तय करेगी कितनी सजा मिलेगी

दोषसिद्धि के बाद मामले की सुनवाई अब सजा के चरण में पहुंच गई है।

सौरभ के परिवार ने दोनों दोषियों के लिए अधिकतम सजा की मांग की है। अभियोजन पक्ष भी मृत्युदंड की मांग कर चुका है।

हालांकि बुधवार के फैसले में अदालत ने केवल दोष सिद्ध किया है। अंतिम सजा पर निर्णय अभी बाकी है और अगली कार्यवाही में अदालत इसी पहलू पर विचार करेगी।
