Community groups welcome his UK visit while critics seek government scrutiny; British minister reiterates rules on entry and hate-related threats.

LONDON — RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s arrival in Britain has produced sharply contrasting reactions, with a large section of the Hindu community welcoming his visit while campaign groups and some political voices have pressed the UK government to examine it more closely.
Bhagwat landed in London on Thursday after travelling through the United States and Canada as part of an international programme marking the RSS centenary.
His British schedule is expected to include an interaction with members of the Indian diaspora during the weekend.
The competing responses have made his London visit more than a routine diaspora engagement, bringing renewed attention to the RSS, its public activities outside India and the political debate surrounding its ideology.
Community organisations put forward their case.
A coalition of more than 100 British Hindu and community organisations has publicly backed the visit.
In a joint statement, the groups highlighted what they described as the RSS’s work in voluntary service, education, leadership, social cohesion and emergency assistance.
Hindu Council UK, Hindu Forum of Britain, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh UK and INSIGHT UK were among the signatories.
The organisations also pointed to five themes being promoted by the RSS during its centenary year: greater social harmony, stronger family structures, voluntary service, environmental responsibility and commitment to civic duties.
Their statement presents the visit as part of a wider discussion about community service and social responsibility rather than simply an organisational event.
Conservative MP Bob Blackman also indicated that he had engaged with Bhagwat, saying he was pleased to hear his views about the RSS and its future.
Critics turn attention to Home Office.
The welcome has been accompanied by a separate campaign seeking greater official scrutiny of the RSS chief’s presence in Britain.
South Asia Solidarity Group and Hindus for Human Rights UK were among the organisations that called on the British government to boycott or oppose the visit.
The issue reached Parliament through a written question from British-Indian MP Nadia Whittome.
She asked whether the Home Office had assessed Bhagwat’s visit against the government’s stated commitment to prevent people described as hate preachers or extremists from entering the UK.
Security Minister Dan Jarvis, responding on Thursday, declined to discuss Bhagwat’s individual case.
He said the government remained concerned with the full range of security threats and with preventing people from spreading messages that encourage violence or hatred against individuals or communities.
He added that all people seeking admission to Britain must satisfy the country’s immigration requirements.
The minister’s response therefore did not specifically endorse or condemn Bhagwat’s visit, but restated the government’s general position on entry and security.
New York controversy provides backdrop.
The London debate follows a contentious US leg of Bhagwat’s tour.
In New York last month, the RSS chief spoke before around 5,000 people associated with Indian-American organisations at the Infosys Theater at Madison Square Garden.
The gathering, titled “Universal Oneness Celebration”, was organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue as part of the centenary outreach programme.
His appearance prompted criticism from several quarters in the US.
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom called for consideration of sanctions against RSS members and urged the US government not to extend high-level meetings or diplomatic courtesies to Bhagwat.
US Representatives Rashida Tlaib and Jim McGovern separately objected to the platform given to the RSS chief, alleging that the organisation has been associated with discrimination and violence against religious minorities in India.
New York City Councilmember Zohran Mamdani also spoke against the event, describing the RSS’s rise as deeply troubling and criticising what he called its exclusionary vision.
At the same time, he acknowledged that municipal authorities were unlikely to have the power to stop a privately organised gathering.
Bhagwat’s message focused on coexistence.
The criticism surrounding the New York event was accompanied by a message from Bhagwat that placed considerable emphasis on unity.
Before his Madison Square Garden appearance, he told a “One World One Humanity” gathering that a person could not regard Muslims as having no place in India and simultaneously claim to follow Hinduism.
He argued that acceptance of different paths was fundamental to Hindu thought. In his later address, he acknowledged that differences among people are inevitable but said they should exist within a framework of unity.
He also called diversity a form of “decoration of oneness” and urged people to do more than simply tolerate others.
His message included a responsibility to support other people, protect nature and contribute to the larger world.
For Indians living abroad, Bhagwat said responsibility also extends to the country in which they have made their homes and careers.
He added that India expects its diaspora to preserve and demonstrate the values it has inherited from the country.
Britain becomes key stop in centenary campaign.
Bhagwat’s London appearance is the latest overseas engagement in a centenary-year campaign aimed at connecting the RSS with Indian communities abroad.
The reception in Britain, however, has underscored the competing narratives surrounding the organisation.
Supporters have emphasised voluntary service, social cohesion and community engagement, while critics have focused on allegations concerning the RSS’s treatment of religious minorities and its ideological influence.
With both sides making their positions public, Bhagwat’s weekend engagements in Britain are likely to keep the RSS’s international outreach in the spotlight.

लंदन — राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ (RSS) प्रमुख मोहन भागवत के ब्रिटेन पहुंचने के साथ ही उनकी यात्रा को लेकर वहां दो अलग-अलग तस्वीरें सामने आई हैं।
एक तरफ 100 से अधिक हिंदू और सामुदायिक संगठनों ने उनके आगमन का स्वागत किया है, वहीं कुछ नागरिक संगठनों और राजनीतिक आवाजों ने ब्रिटिश सरकार से उनके दौरे की कड़ी समीक्षा की मांग की है।
भागवत गुरुवार को लंदन पहुंचे। अमेरिका और कनाडा के बाद ब्रिटेन उनके तीन देशों के दौरे का अंतिम पड़ाव है।

इन संगठनों ने RSS के शताब्दी वर्ष में सामने रखे गए पांच प्रमुख सामाजिक विषयों का भी समर्थन किया।
इनमें समाज में सद्भाव बढ़ाना, परिवार की भूमिका को मजबूत करना, निस्वार्थ सेवा, पर्यावरण के प्रति जिम्मेदारी और नागरिक कर्तव्यों का ईमानदारी से पालन शामिल है।
उनका कहना है कि ये मुद्दे केवल RSS की गतिविधियों तक सीमित नहीं हैं, बल्कि व्यापक समाज के लिए भी महत्वपूर्ण हैं।
कंजरवेटिव सांसद बॉब ब्लैकमैन ने भी भागवत से मुलाकात का जिक्र करते हुए कहा कि उन्हें RSS के भविष्य को लेकर उनके विचार और योजनाएं सुनकर खुशी हुई।
आलोचकों ने सरकार के सामने उठाया मामला
भागवत के समर्थन में जारी बयान के समानांतर ब्रिटेन में उनके दौरे के खिलाफ भी आवाजें उठी हैं।
साउथ एशिया सॉलिडेरिटी ग्रुप और हिंदूज फॉर ह्यूमन राइट्स यूके सहित कुछ संगठनों ने ब्रिटिश सरकार से भागवत की यात्रा का विरोध करने या इससे दूरी बनाए रखने की अपील की।
मामला ब्रिटिश संसद तक भी पहुंचा।
ब्रिटिश-भारतीय सांसद नादिया व्हिटोम ने गृह मंत्रालय से पूछा कि क्या भागवत के प्रवेश का मूल्यांकन उन सरकारी नीतियों के तहत किया गया है, जिनका उद्देश्य नफरत फैलाने वाले वक्ताओं और चरमपंथियों को ब्रिटेन में प्रवेश से रोकना है।
ब्रिटेन के सुरक्षा मंत्री डैन जार्विस ने गुरुवार को जवाब देते हुए कहा कि सरकार व्यक्तिगत मामलों पर टिप्पणी नहीं करती।
हालांकि उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार हर तरह के सुरक्षा खतरे पर ध्यान दे रही है और ऐसे लोगों से निपटने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है जो किसी व्यक्ति या समुदाय के खिलाफ हिंसा अथवा नफरत को बढ़ावा देने वाले विचार फैलाते हैं।
उन्होंने यह भी स्पष्ट किया कि ब्रिटेन आने वाले हर व्यक्ति को आव्रजन नियमों में तय शर्तों को पूरा करना होता है।
इस जवाब में भागवत के मामले पर सरकार ने न तो कोई विशेष टिप्पणी की और न ही उनकी यात्रा के समर्थन या विरोध का संकेत दिया।
अमेरिका में हुई आलोचना बनी पृष्ठभूमि
लंदन का दौरा ऐसे समय हो रहा है जब भागवत की हालिया अमेरिकी यात्रा भी विवाद का विषय रही थी।
न्यूयॉर्क में पिछले महीने उन्होंने मैडिसन स्क्वायर गार्डन के इंफोसिस थिएटर में भारतीय-अमेरिकी संगठनों से जुड़े लगभग 5,000 लोगों को संबोधित किया था।
“यूनिवर्सल वननेस सेलिब्रेशन” नामक इस कार्यक्रम का आयोजन अमेरिकन हिंदूज फॉर एंगेजमेंट एंड डायलॉग ने RSS के शताब्दी अभियान के तहत किया था।
कार्यक्रम को लेकर अमेरिका में विरोध हुआ था।
अमेरिकी आयोग ऑन इंटरनेशनल रिलीजियस फ्रीडम ने अमेरिकी प्रशासन से RSS सदस्यों पर संभावित प्रतिबंधों पर विचार करने तथा भागवत को उच्चस्तरीय बैठकों या राजनयिक शिष्टाचार से दूर रखने की अपील की थी।
अमेरिकी सांसद राशिदा तलीब और जिम मैकगवर्न ने भी कार्यक्रम पर आपत्ति जताई। उन्होंने RSS पर भारत में धार्मिक अल्पसंख्यकों के खिलाफ भेदभाव और हिंसा से जुड़े आरोप लगाए।
न्यूयॉर्क के मेयर जोहरान ममदानी ने भी कार्यक्रम से पहले RSS की आलोचना की थी।
उन्होंने संगठन के बढ़ते प्रभाव को चिंताजनक बताते हुए उसके कथित बहिष्कारी दृष्टिकोण पर सवाल उठाया।
हालांकि उन्होंने यह भी माना था कि निजी कार्यक्रम को रोकने का अधिकार नगर प्रशासन के पास संभवतः नहीं था।
भागवत ने दिया एकता का संदेश
अमेरिका में उठे विरोध के बीच भागवत ने अपने संबोधनों में सामाजिक एकता और सह-अस्तित्व को प्रमुखता दी।
मैडिसन स्क्वायर गार्डन कार्यक्रम से पहले “वन वर्ल्ड वन ह्यूमैनिटी” कार्यक्रम में उन्होंने कहा था कि कोई व्यक्ति खुद को हिंदू नहीं कह सकता यदि वह यह मानता है कि भारत में मुसलमानों के लिए कोई जगह नहीं होनी चाहिए।
उन्होंने विभिन्न धार्मिक मार्गों को एक ही लक्ष्य तक पहुंचने वाला बताया। बाद में न्यूयॉर्क में उन्होंने कहा कि लोगों के बीच अंतर होना स्वाभाविक है, लेकिन एकता बुनियादी तत्व है।
भागवत ने विविधता को “एकता की सजावट” बताया और लोगों से केवल दूसरों को सहन करने तक सीमित न रहने की अपील की। उन्होंने दूसरों के जीवन, प्रकृति और व्यापक समाज के प्रति जिम्मेदारी निभाने की बात भी कही।
विदेशों में रहने वाले भारतीयों को संबोधित करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि जिस देश में वे रहते और काम करते हैं, उसके प्रति भी उनका दायित्व है। साथ ही उन्होंने कहा कि भारत अपने प्रवासी समुदाय से देश से मिले मूल्यों को अपनाने और उन्हें अपने जीवन में उतारने की अपेक्षा करता है।
RSS की शताब्दी मुहिम का अगला पड़ाव
ब्रिटेन की यात्रा RSS के 100 वर्ष पूरे होने के अवसर पर चल रहे वैश्विक संपर्क अभियान का हिस्सा है। अमेरिका और कनाडा के बाद भागवत का लंदन पहुंचना संगठन की विदेशों में पहुंच बढ़ाने की कोशिश को दर्शाता है।
हालांकि ब्रिटेन में सामने आई प्रतिक्रियाएं RSS को लेकर मौजूद मतभेदों को भी उजागर करती हैं।
समर्थक संगठन उसकी सामाजिक सेवा और सामुदायिक गतिविधियों को सामने रख रहे हैं, जबकि आलोचक उसकी विचारधारा और भारत में अल्पसंख्यकों से जुड़े आरोपों को लेकर सवाल उठा रहे हैं।
