NEW DELHI: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has used his latest visit to the United States to underline a message of religious coexistence, saying that a person who believes Muslims have no place in India cannot claim to represent the Hindu ethos.
Addressing the One World One Humanity conference of faith leaders in New York, Bhagwat argued that differences between religions should not obscure what he described as the common bond of humanity.
His remarks centred on the idea that the dignity of every individual is fundamental and that different religious traditions can ultimately lead people towards the same goal.
Bhagwat referred to questions posed to him by Muslim participants during his 2018 lecture series in New Delhi.
According to his recollection, some had asked what the RSS’s concept of a “Hindu Rashtra” would mean for Muslims and whether they would be expected to leave the country.
Responding to that concern, Bhagwat said the exclusion of Muslims would be incompatible with Hindutva.
He recalled telling the participants that if a Hindu believes Muslims should not live in India, “he ceases to be a Hindu.”
The RSS chief expanded the argument beyond the Hindu-Muslim question, saying that those who identify themselves as Hindus should recognise the validity of different paths and the fundamental dignity shared by all human beings.
Owaisi questions RSS record
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi, however, dismissed Bhagwat’s remarks as an attempt to project a more inclusive image of the RSS.
In a post on X, Owaisi described the statement as an old tactic in what he called the Sangh organisation’s established “playbook”.
Owaisi referred to writings and positions associated with early RSS thinkers and alleged that the organisation historically viewed religious minorities with hostility.
He also accused the RSS of opposing democratic politics and favouring authoritarian forms of governance.
In another part of his post, Owaisi alleged that the RSS has regarded Muslims and Christians as major “internal threats” and claimed that some of its ideological literature advocates treating Muslim citizens with continuing suspicion.
These were Owaisi’s political assertions, and the RSS had not responded to the allegations at the time of publication.
Bhagwat’s US visit sparks controversy
The RSS chief’s remarks came amid a wider debate surrounding his New York engagements.
Bhagwat was in the city for programmes organised around interfaith dialogue and universal harmony, including an event hosted by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD).
His appearance also drew criticism from civil rights voices in New York as well as Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani said he did not endorse either the RSS or the event associated with Bhagwat, while also noting that the city government did not have the authority to cancel the programme.
Bhagwat’s New York visit therefore produced two contrasting narratives: supporters highlighted his call for unity across religious communities.
At the same time, critics questioned the RSS’s ideological record and the appropriateness of providing a platform to its chief.
After completing his engagements in New York, Bhagwat is scheduled to continue his US visit-related itinerary with a five-day tour of Canada.

नई दिल्ली: राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ (RSS) प्रमुख मोहन भागवत ने अमेरिका के न्यूयॉर्क में आयोजित एक अंतरधार्मिक सम्मेलन में भारत की धार्मिक विविधता और हिंदू-मुस्लिम एकता को लेकर महत्वपूर्ण टिप्पणी की।
उन्होंने कहा कि जो व्यक्ति यह मानता है कि भारत में मुसलमानों के लिए कोई स्थान नहीं होना चाहिए, वह हिंदू होने के मूल भाव से ही दूर हो जाता है।
वन वर्ल्ड वन ह्यूमैनिटी नाम से आयोजित धर्मगुरुओं के सम्मेलन में भागवत ने कहा कि अलग-अलग धर्मों की अपनी मान्यताएं और परंपराएं हो सकती हैं, लेकिन मनुष्य के रूप में सभी एक साझा आधार से जुड़े हैं।
उन्होंने प्रत्येक व्यक्ति की गरिमा को समान बताते हुए धार्मिक रास्तों की विविधता को स्वीकार करने की बात कही।
अपने संबोधन के दौरान RSS प्रमुख ने 2018 में दिल्ली में आयोजित अपनी व्याख्यान श्रृंखला का प्रसंग भी साझा किया।
उन्होंने बताया कि उस दौरान मौजूद कुछ मुस्लिम प्रतिभागियों ने उनसे सवाल किया था कि यदि संघ ‘हिंदू राष्ट्र’ की बात करता है, तो भारत में रहने वाले मुसलमानों का भविष्य क्या होगा।
भागवत के अनुसार, उनसे यह भी पूछा गया था कि क्या मुसलमानों को देश से बाहर जाने के लिए कहा जाएगा।
उन्होंने उस सवाल के जवाब को याद करते हुए कहा कि मुसलमानों को भारत से बाहर करने की सोच हिंदुत्व की अवधारणा के अनुरूप नहीं है।
उन्होंने कहा कि यदि कोई हिंदू यह मानता है कि भारत में मुसलमान नहीं होने चाहिए, तो वह स्वयं हिंदू नहीं रह जाता।
भागवत ने अपने तर्क को केवल हिंदू-मुस्लिम संबंधों तक सीमित नहीं रखा।
उन्होंने कहा कि हिंदू होने का अर्थ विभिन्न आध्यात्मिक मार्गों को स्वीकार करना और यह समझना भी है कि सभी मनुष्यों में मूलभूत गरिमा समान रूप से मौजूद है।
ओवैसी ने बयान पर साधा निशाना
भागवत की टिप्पणी पर AIMIM प्रमुख असदुद्दीन ओवैसी ने तीखी प्रतिक्रिया दी।
सोशल मीडिया मंच X पर एक पोस्ट में ओवैसी ने इसे संघ की पुरानी रणनीति का हिस्सा बताया और RSS की वैचारिक पृष्ठभूमि पर सवाल उठाए।
ओवैसी ने RSS से जुड़े शुरुआती विचारकों और उनके लेखन का हवाला देते हुए आरोप लगाया कि संगठन का इतिहास धार्मिक अल्पसंख्यकों के प्रति संदेह और विरोध की विचारधारा से जुड़ा रहा है।
उन्होंने यह भी दावा किया कि RSS लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था का विरोध करता रहा है और उसके कुछ वैचारिक आग्रह अधिक केंद्रीकृत या तानाशाही शासन की ओर संकेत करते हैं।
अपने पोस्ट में ओवैसी ने यह आरोप भी लगाया कि RSS की विचारधारा में मुसलमानों और ईसाइयों को क्रमशः प्रमुख ‘आंतरिक खतरे’ के रूप में देखा गया है तथा मुस्लिम नागरिकों के प्रति स्थायी संदेह रखने की बात कही गई है।
हालांकि, ये आरोप ओवैसी के राजनीतिक दावे हैं। रिपोर्ट लिखे जाने तक RSS की ओर से इन आरोपों पर कोई प्रतिक्रिया सामने नहीं आई थी।
न्यूयॉर्क दौरे को लेकर भी विवाद
भागवत का न्यूयॉर्क दौरा ऐसे समय हुआ जब उनके कार्यक्रमों को लेकर अमेरिका में भी राजनीतिक और नागरिक अधिकारों से जुड़े सवाल उठाए गए। उनकी यात्रा के दौरान अमेरिकन हिंदूज फॉर एंगेजमेंट एंड डायलॉग (AHEAD) मंच से जुड़े कार्यक्रमों में धार्मिक सद्भाव और सार्वभौमिक एकता पर चर्चा हुई।
न्यूयॉर्क के मेयर जोहरान ममदानी ने भागवत और RSS के प्रति समर्थन से इनकार किया। हालांकि, उन्होंने यह भी स्पष्ट किया कि शहर प्रशासन के पास कार्यक्रम को रद्द करने का अधिकार नहीं था।
इस तरह भागवत की न्यूयॉर्क यात्रा के दौरान उनके बयान ने जहां धार्मिक समावेश और मानवीय एकता का संदेश सामने रखा, वहीं RSS की वैचारिक विरासत को लेकर उनके आलोचकों की आपत्तियां भी चर्चा में बनी रहीं।
न्यूयॉर्क में अपने कार्यक्रम पूरे करने के बाद भागवत पांच दिवसीय दौरे पर कनाडा जाने वाले हैं।
