Four people have died in leopard attacks in Moradabad district in four weeks. Fear in Bahapur Baliya has prompted villagers to consider leaving their homes.

MORADABAD: Fear of leopard attacks is intensifying in villages in Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad district after four people were killed in separate incidents within roughly a month, with three deaths occurring in Bahapur Baliya alone.
The latest fatality has brought the crisis directly into the residential area.
A 35-year-old farmer, Jagraj Singh Saini, was reportedly attacked while asleep in the courtyard of his house in Bahapur Baliya on Saturday.
Residents said the leopard caught him by the neck and dragged him away. His body was recovered from a field near the village the next morning.
The incident has left residents questioning whether it is still safe to remain in their homes.
Six other people have also suffered injuries in leopard attacks in the surrounding area, according to local accounts.
Village meeting discusses migration
With repeated sightings and attacks creating a sense of insecurity, villagers gathered on Sunday to discuss whether families should temporarily move away from Bahapur Baliya.
Naresh Kumar, the village head, said some residents had expressed their intention to leave with their families and return only after the threat had subsided.
He said he was attempting to convince them not to abandon their homes.
The discussion reflects the extent of anxiety in the village, where residents say encounters that were previously associated mainly with farmland have increasingly occurred close to houses and populated areas.
Villagers are now pressing the administration and Forest Department for decisive action.
Kumar said the community wants the authorities to classify the suspected leopard as a man-eater and permit a shoot-on-sight operation against the animal believed to be behind the attacks.
Residents have also sought a permanent Forest Department post in Bahapur Baliya.
They say round-the-clock surveillance would allow officials to detect leopard movement sooner and send teams rapidly when animals are spotted.
Four deaths reported in nearby villages
The recent attacks have affected both Bahapur Baliya and the neighbouring Lalapur Peepalsana, located about two kilometres away.
In Bahapur Baliya, 55-year-old Brahmo Devi died after being attacked while collecting fodder on August 18.
A week later, on August 25, 45-year-old Mithilesh Devi was fatally attacked while working in a sugarcane field.
Three other women accompanying Brahmo Devi were also attacked in the earlier incident.
The third death in Bahapur Baliya was that of Jagraj Singh Saini.
In Lalapur Peepalsana, 45-year-old Santosh Devi was killed in a leopard attack on August 3.
Villagers and Forest Department personnel suspect that a single leopard could be responsible for some or all of the attacks, although the identity of the animal has not been conclusively established.
Forest teams intensify search
The Forest Department says efforts are underway to locate and capture leopards in the affected belt.
Officials have installed cages and deployed nets while teams continue patrols around locations where animals have been sighted, or attacks have occurred.
Authorities have also increased interaction with villagers, including public meetings and announcements through loudspeakers, to caution residents about the risks and advise them on precautions.
Moradabad Divisional Forest Officer Vinay Kumar Singh said 10 leopards had already been captured during the month and that operations to locate others were continuing.
Singh also said the Forest Department had not received information about the decision reportedly taken at Sunday’s village meeting regarding families considering leaving Bahapur Baliya.
Bahapur Baliya has a population of about 1,400 people and lies along the Ramganga river.
The village comes under Thakurdwara tehsil and is approximately 80 kilometres from Moradabad district headquarters.

मुरादाबाद: उत्तर प्रदेश के मुरादाबाद जिले के ग्रामीण इलाकों में तेंदुए के लगातार हमलों ने जनजीवन को भय के साए में ला दिया है।
पिछले करीब चार सप्ताह में तेंदुए के हमलों में चार लोगों की जान जा चुकी है। इनमें तीन मौतें बहापुर बलिया गांव में हुई हैं, जबकि एक अन्य घटना पड़ोसी गांव लालापुर पीपलसाना में सामने आई।
बहापुर बलिया में शनिवार को हुई घटना ने ग्रामीणों की चिंता और बढ़ा दी। 35 वर्षीय किसान जग्गराज सिंह सैनी पर उस समय हमला किया गया जब वह अपने घर के आंगन में सो रहे थे।
ग्रामीणों के मुताबिक, तेंदुआ उन्हें गर्दन से पकड़कर वहां से घसीट ले गया। अगले दिन सुबह उनका शव गांव के समीप एक खेत में मिला।
इससे पहले भी इलाके में तेंदुए के हमलों में छह लोग घायल हो चुके हैं। ग्रामीणों का कहना है कि अब जंगली जानवरों का खतरा खेतों तक सीमित नहीं रहा और आबादी वाले हिस्सों में भी हमले होने लगे हैं।
गांव छोड़ने तक पर विचार
लगातार हो रही घटनाओं के बीच बहापुर बलिया के लोगों ने रविवार को बैठक कर मौजूदा हालात पर चर्चा की।
बैठक में कुछ परिवारों ने गांव से बाहर चले जाने की इच्छा जताई। उनका कहना था कि जब तक तेंदुए का खतरा समाप्त नहीं होता, तब तक परिवारों को सुरक्षित स्थान पर रखना बेहतर होगा।
ग्राम प्रधान नरेश कुमार ने बताया कि वह ग्रामीणों को गांव छोड़ने से रोकने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं। उनके मुताबिक, लोगों में लगातार हमलों और तेंदुए की गतिविधियों को लेकर गहरी आशंका बनी हुई है।
ग्रामीणों ने वन विभाग से अधिक प्रभावी कार्रवाई की मांग की है।
उनका कहना है कि लगातार हमलों के बाद अब उस तेंदुए की पहचान कर उसे आदमखोर घोषित किया जाना चाहिए, जिसे इन घटनाओं के लिए जिम्मेदार माना जा रहा है।
ग्राम प्रधान ने ऐसे जानवर के खिलाफ शूट-ऑन-साइट कार्रवाई की मांग भी रखी है।
ग्रामीणों की एक अन्य प्रमुख मांग बहापुर बलिया में स्थायी वन चौकी स्थापित करने की है। उनका मानना है कि यदि गांव में वनकर्मियों की नियमित मौजूदगी रहे तो तेंदुए की गतिविधियों पर लगातार नजर रखी जा सकेगी और किसी भी सूचना पर तत्काल कार्रवाई संभव होगी।
अगस्त में तीन गांवों में मौतें
बहापुर, बलिया में अगस्त के दौरान दो महिलाओं और एक किसान की मौत तेंदुए के हमलों में हुई।
18 अगस्त को 55 वर्षीय ब्रह्मो देवी चारा जुटाने गई थीं, तभी उन पर हमला हुआ और उनकी जान चली गई। इस घटना के दौरान उनके साथ मौजूद तीन अन्य महिलाओं पर भी तेंदुए ने हमला किया था।
25 अगस्त को 45 वर्षीय मिथिलेश देवी गन्ने के खेत में काम कर रही थीं, तभी वह भी हमले का शिकार हो गईं। उनकी मौत के बाद गांव में भय और गहरा गया।
इसके बाद शनिवार को जग्गराज सिंह सैनी की मौत ने खतरे को खेतों से निकालकर ग्रामीणों के घरों की चौखट तक पहुंचा दिया।
बहापुर बलिया से लगभग दो किलोमीटर दूर लालापुर पीपलसाना में भी 3 अगस्त को 45 वर्षीय संतोष देवी को तेंदुए ने अपना शिकार बनाया था।
ग्रामीणों और वन विभाग के अधिकारियों को आशंका है कि इलाके में सक्रिय एक ही तेंदुआ कई घटनाओं के पीछे हो सकता है। हालांकि, हमलों के लिए जिम्मेदार जानवर की निश्चित पहचान अभी नहीं हुई है।
वन विभाग ने बढ़ाई निगरानी
वन विभाग का कहना है कि प्रभावित गांवों में तेंदुओं को पकड़ने के लिए लगातार अभियान चलाया जा रहा है।
पिंजरे और जाल लगाए गए हैं तथा जिन इलाकों में तेंदुए के देखे जाने या हमले की सूचना मिली है, वहां वनकर्मियों की गश्त बढ़ाई गई है।
ग्रामीणों को सतर्क करने के लिए बैठकों के साथ-साथ लाउडस्पीकर के जरिए भी सुरक्षा संबंधी निर्देश दिए जा रहे हैं।
अधिकारियों ने लोगों को तेंदुए की मौजूदगी की स्थिति में सावधानी बरतने और विभाग को तत्काल सूचना देने की सलाह दी है।
मुरादाबाद के प्रभागीय वन अधिकारी विनय कुमार सिंह के मुताबिक, इस महीने अब तक 10 तेंदुओं को पकड़ा जा चुका है।
उन्होंने कहा कि इलाके में मौजूद अन्य तेंदुओं का पता लगाने और उन्हें पकड़ने का अभियान जारी है।
सिंह ने यह भी कहा कि बहापुर बलिया में रविवार को हुई बैठक और ग्रामीणों के गांव छोड़ने के कथित फैसले की जानकारी वन विभाग को नहीं मिली है।
करीब 1,400 की आबादी वाला बहापुर बलिया रामगंगा नदी के किनारे स्थित है। यह गांव ठाकुरद्वारा तहसील के अंतर्गत आता है और मुरादाबाद जिला मुख्यालय से लगभग 80 किलोमीटर दूर है।
