The Actor-Dancer Recalls Rajinikanth’s ‘Ultimate Compliment’ and the Unexpected Pregnancy That Made Her ‘Ala Bolelo’ Shoot Unforgettable

When Shamna Kasim stepped onto the set of ‘Jailer 2’ to shoot the song ‘Ala Bolelo’, she was carrying more than just the weight of a lifelong dream.

The Malayalam actor, also known by her screen name Purnaa, was carrying a secret she didn’t even know herself—she was pregnant.

The revelation, which came to light in a recent interview, has added a remarkable layer to what was already a landmark moment in her career.

Performing alongside Rajinikanth in a Nelson Dilipkumar directorial was a childhood fantasy turned reality. “I am a huge fan of Rajinikanth sir. I grew up watching his movies,” she recalled.

She had once imagined herself dancing to ‘Minsara Kanna’ from ‘Padayappa’ alongside the superstar. “So, I guess I manifested this new song for myself,” she said, reflecting on the uncanny turn of events.

The shoot, however, was far from a simple manifestation. Director Nelson Dilipkumar had seen her dance in ‘Guntur Kaaram’—the song ‘Kurchi Madathapetti’ alongside Mahesh Babu—and reached out.

She had almost given up hope of getting a song in a costume that felt right for her. But Nelson assured her she would wear a sari, emphasizing grace over glamour. “He wanted someone who could emote well as the song has a lot of expressions in it,” she said.

And then came the revelation. “Ironically, God had written this song for me after my marriage and two kids.

I was pregnant when I shot for ‘Ala Bolelo’ and I didn’t even realise it,” she confessed. The song, which features her in a traditional kasavu saree, was rehearsed for two days and shot over six days.

Despite the physical demands of the shoot, it was Rajinikanth himself who made the experience truly unforgettable.

After her first shot with the superstar, he offered her a compliment that she would carry with her forever. “He told me that I have very powerful eyes,” she recalled. “For me, that was the ultimate compliment.”

The actor admitted she was nervous on set, having grown up idolizing him as his iconic character from ‘Padayappa’. “I find it hard to explain in words what it felt like to be with him on the same set,” she said.

‘Ala Bolelo’, composed and sung by Anirudh Ravichander, was released as the first single from the much-anticipated ‘Jailer 2’ on the eve of Onam.

The four-minute lyrical video quickly crossed seven million views on YouTube, with fans praising Shamna’s energetic performance and her graceful moves in the traditional kasavu saree.

As one X user put it, “The #AlaBolelo fever is officially ON! The beats, the energy, the vibe #Jailer2 is already setting the stage on fire!”

The song marks a significant milestone for Shamna, who has worked across Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada cinema.

A trained classical dancer from Kannur, Kerala, she had once dreamed of becoming a dance teacher—a dream she has now realized in Dubai. But performing in a Rajinikanth film was a fantasy that had seemed even more distant.

‘Jailer 2’, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, is the sequel to the 2023 blockbuster.

The film, set for a worldwide theatrical release on October 15, 2026, brings back Rajinikanth and Ramya Krishnan in their iconic roles.

It also features an ensemble cast including Yogi Babu, Mirnaa, and Rithvik, along with special appearances by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff.

For Shamna Kasim, the ‘Ala Bolelo’ experience was more than just a dance number.
