Mohan Bhagwat Says India’s Global Leadership Should Rest on Values, Not Superpower Status
RSS chief tells Indian community in Canada that Bharat’s civilisational strength lies in service, pluralism and the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam
Mohan Bhagwat on India as Vishwaguru: Values Over Superpower Status
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat says India can become a Vishwaguru through its civilisational values, service and unity in diversity rather than military or economic power.
CANADA: India’s role in the world should not be measured merely by its economic weight or military strength, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said, arguing that the country’s civilisational influence has historically come from its values, conduct and willingness to serve others.
Addressing members of the Indian community in Canada on Monday, Bhagwat said India’s aspiration to be recognised as a “Vishwaguru” — a guide or teacher to the world — was fundamentally different from the pursuit of superpower status.
In his view, the country’s strength has traditionally been expressed through its character and contribution to humanity.
Bhagwat pointed to India’s long history of knowledge-sharing as an example of this approach.
He said Indians who travelled to distant parts of the world did not seek to establish political control or impose their beliefs, but carried fields of knowledge such as mathematics, Ayurveda and broader civilisational traditions.
He connected this outlook with what he described as the Hindu understanding of unity within diversity.
According to Bhagwat, Indian thought does not regard differences among people, communities and cultures as an obstacle to unity.
Instead, diversity is accepted as a natural feature of society while an underlying sense of oneness remains central.
The RSS chief also invoked India’s history of offering refuge to communities facing persecution.
He referred to the arrival of Parsis and Jews in India and said the country’s tradition of extending assistance had continued into the modern era, including during international crises and conflicts.
His remarks came a day after he addressed a gathering at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where he spoke about India’s role in demonstrating that unity and diversity can coexist.
In Canada, he continued that theme by presenting India’s international role primarily through the lens of its civilisational philosophy rather than conventional measures of national power.
Bhagwat also placed the ancient concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or “the world is one family”, at the centre of his argument.
He said a broad-minded outlook requires moving beyond the rigid division of what belongs to oneself and what belongs to others.
India’s diversity, he observed, has existed across communities, languages, castes and faiths for centuries.
Rather than treating this plurality as a problem requiring uniformity, he said, Indian civilisation has traditionally regarded diversity as natural and unity as the deeper reality.
During the address, Bhagwat also offered his interpretation of the term “Hindu”, describing it as a civilisational concept rather than one confined to a particular form of worship, language or lifestyle.
He said acceptance and respect for different ways of living were integral to this worldview.
Turning to the wider world, Bhagwat said the challenges facing humanity now extend well beyond questions of national power.
Climate change, environmental damage and the threat posed by weapons of mass destruction, he said, require a different approach to development and coexistence.
He questioned a model in which the wellbeing of one section comes at the expense of another.
A sustainable alternative, he argued, would have to accommodate the interests of individuals, society and the natural environment simultaneously rather than forcing one to bear the cost of another’s prosperity.
Bhagwat described Dharma in this context as more than religious practice, linking it instead to balance, sustenance and a sense of responsibility towards others.
He argued that such an equilibrium could provide a framework in which people, communities and nature develop without undermining one another.
He called on Hindus to reflect more seriously on these principles, saying the wider world needs such an approach.
At the same time, Bhagwat stressed that India should not seek to impose its worldview on others, but demonstrate it through conduct and example.
