Rahul Gandhi Event in Indore Sparks BJP-Congress Row Over PM Modi Mimicry
BJP leaders criticised a comedy performance at the ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’ programme, while the controversy centred on references to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his late mother and an elderly woman.
INDORE: A comedy performance during Rahul Gandhi’s student outreach programme in Indore has triggered a fresh political confrontation between the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, with the BJP objecting to portions of a stand-up routine that imitated Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The episode took place at ‘Chhatron Ki Goonj’, the Congress leader’s student-focused programme in Indore on September 19.
Stand-up comedian Pulkit Mani performed an act featuring an imitation of Modi’s speech and mannerisms, including his interactions with foreign leaders.
A video from the programme subsequently became the centre of the political dispute.
In the footage circulated by both sides, Gandhi can be seen laughing during the performance as the comedian moves between jokes about the prime minister’s public persona, foreign engagements and other references.
The performance also incorporated a reference to an elderly woman who had interacted with Modi at an earlier public event.
BJP leaders interpreted the portion as a mockery of that interaction and criticised Gandhi for laughing while the act was being performed.
The Congress has disputed the BJP’s framing of the episode.
The BJP’s response quickly expanded beyond the original performance.
Several party leaders accused Gandhi and the Congress of crossing acceptable political boundaries, while objecting particularly to the reference involving Modi’s late mother.
Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi described the episode as an example of what he called a serious decline in political conduct.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also criticised the Congress leader, arguing that personal references involving a mother should not become part of political exchanges.
BJP national spokesperson CR Kesavan separately attacked Gandhi over his presence on the stage during the performance.
He alleged that the episode amounted to disrespect towards women and an elderly person and used the controversy to criticise what he described as the Congress’s political culture.
The comedian’s routine was broader than the portion that subsequently generated the political backlash.
Mani imitated Modi’s characteristic style of addressing foreign leaders and repeatedly used the phrase “my friend” as part of the act.
At one point, the performance included the exchange, “My friend, how are you?”, followed by Gandhi responding in a manner that continued the imitation.
The routine also touched on the prime minister’s interactions with children, a coin trick associated with him and the controversy surrounding the recent AI Summit.
The reference to Modi’s mother became particularly contentious after the performance.
BJP leaders said Gandhi’s reaction while sharing the stage with the comedian amounted to endorsement of the remarks.
The Congress, however, has rejected the attempt to portray the event as an insult to Modi’s late mother.
Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari has dismissed the BJP’s interpretation of the episode.
The controversy has emerged just as the Congress has been using the Indore programme to intensify its engagement with students.
Gandhi’s speech at the event focused on education, student concerns, and his criticism of what he described as a political “system” that discourages young people from questioning those in power.
The latest exchange adds another point of friction between the two parties, with both the performance and the political reactions to it now circulating widely on social media.

इंदौर: कांग्रेस नेता और लोकसभा में विपक्ष के नेता राहुल गांधी के इंदौर में आयोजित छात्र संवाद कार्यक्रम में एक कॉमेडी प्रस्तुति के बाद भाजपा और कांग्रेस के बीच नया राजनीतिक विवाद खड़ा हो गया है।
कार्यक्रम में स्टैंड-अप कॉमेडियन पुलकित मणि ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी की बोलने की शैली और उनके सार्वजनिक व्यवहार की नकल की, जिस पर भाजपा नेताओं ने तीखी प्रतिक्रिया दी।
यह मामला 19 सितंबर को आयोजित ‘छात्रों की गूंज’ कार्यक्रम से जुड़ा है। कार्यक्रम का उद्देश्य छात्रों से संवाद और उनके मुद्दों को उठाना था।
इसी दौरान पुलकित मणि मंच पर पहुंचे और उन्होंने प्रधानमंत्री की शैली में विदेशी नेताओं के साथ बातचीत करने से जुड़े अंदाज की नकल करते हुए हास्य प्रस्तुति दी।
प्रस्तुति का वीडियो सोशल मीडिया पर सामने आने के बाद राजनीतिक विवाद तेज हो गया। वीडियो में राहुल गांधी को प्रस्तुति के दौरान हंसते हुए देखा जा सकता है।
भाजपा और कांग्रेस, दोनों पक्षों की ओर से वीडियो साझा किए जाने के बाद इस पर राजनीतिक प्रतिक्रियाओं का सिलसिला शुरू हुआ।
प्रस्तुति में प्रधानमंत्री की सार्वजनिक छवि और विदेशी नेताओं से बातचीत के अलावा बच्चों के साथ उनकी बातचीत से जुड़े प्रसंग, एक सिक्के से जुड़े कथित करतब और हाल में हुए AI Summit से संबंधित विवादों का भी उल्लेख किया गया।
कॉमेडियन ने प्रधानमंत्री की शैली की नकल करते हुए बार-बार “माय फ्रेंड” जैसे संबोधन का इस्तेमाल किया। प्रस्तुति के दौरान इसी अंदाज में संवाद भी किया गया, जिस पर राहुल गांधी ने मंच से प्रतिक्रिया दी।
विवाद उस समय और बढ़ गया जब प्रस्तुति में प्रधानमंत्री की दिवंगत मां से संबंधित संदर्भ भी आया।
भाजपा नेताओं ने आरोप लगाया कि इस हिस्से में प्रधानमंत्री और उनकी मां का मजाक बनाया गया तथा राहुल गांधी की हंसी को उन्होंने इस प्रस्तुति की स्वीकृति के तौर पर पेश किया।
हालांकि, कांग्रेस ने भाजपा के इस आरोप और प्रस्तुति की उसकी व्याख्या को खारिज किया है।
भाजपा के कई नेताओं ने इस मुद्दे पर राहुल गांधी को निशाने पर लिया। केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री प्रह्लाद जोशी और उत्तराखंड के मुख्यमंत्री पुष्कर सिंह धामी ने व्यक्तिगत और पारिवारिक संदर्भों को राजनीतिक मंच पर लाए जाने पर आपत्ति जताई।
भाजपा प्रवक्ता सीआर केसवन ने भी राहुल गांधी की आलोचना की।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि गांधी ऐसे लोगों के साथ मंच साझा कर रहे थे जिन्होंने महिलाओं और बुजुर्गों के प्रति अपमानजनक व्यवहार किया। केसवन ने इस घटना को कांग्रेस की राजनीतिक शैली से जोड़ते हुए सवाल उठाए।
दूसरी ओर, मध्य प्रदेश कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष जीतू पटवारी ने भाजपा की ओर से लगाए जा रहे आरोपों को खारिज किया है।
कांग्रेस का कहना है कि पूरे कार्यक्रम और प्रस्तुति को एक अलग राजनीतिक अर्थ देने की कोशिश की जा रही है।
‘छात्रों की गूंज’ कार्यक्रम में राहुल गांधी ने मुख्य रूप से छात्रों, शिक्षा व्यवस्था और युवाओं से जुड़े मुद्दों को उठाया।
उन्होंने सरकार और मौजूदा राजनीतिक व्यवस्था पर भी सवाल खड़े किए और छात्रों से सवाल पूछने तथा अपनी आवाज बुलंद करने का आह्वान किया।
मिमिक्री को लेकर शुरू हुआ विवाद अब सोशल मीडिया से निकलकर सीधे भाजपा और कांग्रेस के बीच राजनीतिक आरोप-प्रत्यारोप का नया मुद्दा बन गया है।
दोनों दलों के नेताओं की प्रतिक्रियाओं के बाद यह मामला रविवार को दिनभर चर्चा में बना रहा।
