Mountaineering Icon Nirmal Purja Among 10 Killed in Pakistan’s Broad Peak Avalanche, Global Climbing Community in Mourning
A catastrophic avalanche on Pakistan’s Broad Peak has claimed the life of celebrated mountaineer Nirmal “Nims” Purja, the globally acclaimed climber who rewrote mountaineering history by conquering all 14 peaks above 8,000 metres in an unprecedented six-month campaign in 2019.
The tragic accident also killed nine other members of his expedition, bringing an abrupt end to one of the most respected careers in high-altitude climbing.
Disaster unfolded on Thursday when the expedition was making its final push towards the summit of Broad Peak, the world’s 12th-highest mountain rising 8,051 metres above sea level in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region.
A massive avalanche swept across the climbing route around midday, engulfing the team in one of the mountain’s most dangerous sections.
Since that moment, all communication with the climbers had ceased, triggering an intensive search operation.
Confirmation of Purja’s death came on Saturday through Elite Exped, the expedition company established by the renowned climber.
In an emotional message shared on its official Instagram account, the organisation expressed profound grief while announcing that its founder had succumbed to the avalanche that struck the expedition on Broad Peak.
Paying homage to the legendary climber, the company also disclosed that two of his closest Nepalese mountaineering companions—Pur Bahadur Gurung, popularly known as Yukta, and Nima Sherpa—were among those who lost their lives.
The statement described the tragedy as an immeasurable loss and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, urging the public to respect their privacy during an unimaginably painful period.
According to available information, the 10-member expedition brought together six climbers from Nepal along with participants representing Pakistan, Oman, the United States and China.
Rescue teams battled treacherous terrain and worsening weather for two days after the group disappeared.
However, relentless snowfall, unstable conditions and the sheer magnitude of the avalanche severely restricted search efforts.
Pakistani rescue authorities had earlier recovered the bodies of Omani mountaineer Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy, American climber Mallory Geis and Nepalese climber Pur Bahadur Gurung, confirming their deaths.
The latest announcement from Elite Exped has now removed all lingering hope, indicating that every member of the expedition perished in one of the deadliest mountain disasters to strike Broad Peak in recent years.

पाकिस्तान के ब्रॉड पीक पर आए भीषण हिमस्खलन ने विश्व पर्वतारोहण जगत को गहरा आघात पहुंचाया है। दुनिया भर में अपनी असाधारण उपलब्धियों के लिए प्रसिद्ध पर्वतारोही निर्मल “निम्स” पुर्जा का इस हादसे में निधन हो गया।
वर्ष 2019 में महज छह महीनों के भीतर 8,000 मीटर से अधिक ऊंचाई वाली सभी 14 चोटियों को फतह कर इतिहास रचने वाले पुर्जा के साथ अभियान में शामिल नौ अन्य पर्वतारोहियों की भी जान चली गई।
दुर्घटना गुरुवार दोपहर उस समय हुई जब दल पाकिस्तान के गिलगित-बाल्टिस्तान क्षेत्र स्थित 8,051 मीटर ऊंचे ब्रॉड पीक की चोटी की ओर अंतिम चरण की चढ़ाई कर रहा था।
इसी दौरान पर्वत के अत्यंत जोखिमपूर्ण हिस्से में अचानक भारी हिमस्खलन आया, जिसने पूरे अभियान दल को अपनी चपेट में ले लिया।
हादसे के बाद पर्वतारोहियों से संपर्क पूरी तरह टूट गया और तत्काल बड़े पैमाने पर खोज एवं बचाव अभियान शुरू किया गया।
शनिवार को इस दुखद घटना की आधिकारिक पुष्टि एलिट एक्सपेड ने की, जिसकी स्थापना स्वयं निर्मल पुर्जा ने की थी।
कंपनी ने अपने आधिकारिक इंस्टाग्राम संदेश में गहरे शोक के साथ बताया कि ब्रॉड पीक पर आए हिमस्खलन में उसके संस्थापक और विश्वविख्यात पर्वतारोही की मृत्यु हो गई है।
श्रद्धांजलि संदेश में कंपनी ने यह भी बताया कि पुर्जा के विश्वसनीय नेपाली पर्वतारोहण साथी पुर बहादुर गुरूंग, जिन्हें युक्ता के नाम से जाना जाता था, तथा नीमा शेरपा भी इस हादसे में जान गंवाने वालों में शामिल हैं।
कंपनी ने इसे पर्वतारोहण जगत के लिए अपूरणीय क्षति बताते हुए सभी मृतकों के परिजनों और प्रियजनों के प्रति गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त की तथा शोकाकुल परिवारों की निजता का सम्मान करने की अपील की।
उपलब्ध जानकारी के अनुसार अभियान दल में कुल 10 सदस्य शामिल थे, जिनमें छह पर्वतारोही नेपाल से थे, जबकि अन्य सदस्य पाकिस्तान, ओमान, अमेरिका और चीन का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रहे थे।
दल से संपर्क टूटने के बाद बचाव दलों ने लगातार दो दिनों तक कठिन अभियान चलाया, लेकिन खराब मौसम, लगातार बर्फबारी और विशाल हिमस्खलन के कारण राहत एवं खोज कार्य बेहद चुनौतीपूर्ण बना रहा।
इससे पहले पाकिस्तानी अधिकारियों ने ओमान की पर्वतारोही नधीरा अहमद अब्दुल्ला अल हार्थी, अमेरिकी पर्वतारोही मैलोरी गीस तथा नेपाली पर्वतारोही पुर बहादुर गुरूंग के शव बरामद होने के बाद उनकी मृत्यु की पुष्टि की थी।
अब एलिट एक्सपेड के ताजा बयान ने यह स्पष्ट कर दिया है कि अभियान में शामिल शेष पर्वतारोही भी जीवित नहीं बच सके।
इस प्रकार ब्रॉड पीक पर हुआ यह हादसा हाल के वर्षों की सबसे भयावह पर्वतारोहण त्रासदियों में दर्ज हो गया।
