Nepal Flash Flood Aftermath: 10 Bodies Recovered From Gandak in UP, Search Intensifies Along River
Four bodies were found in Maharajganj, and six in Kushinagar after floodwaters crossed into India; authorities are preserving identifying clues as teams maintain round-the-clock surveillance.
Ten bodies have been recovered from the Gandak river in Uttar Pradesh after floodwaters from Nepal swept downstream across the border, prompting authorities in Maharajganj and Kushinagar to intensify surveillance along the river.
The recoveries began on August 27, when an eight-member Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Rescue and Relief Team encountered a floating object while conducting a river patrol in the Nichlaul area of Maharajganj.
Led by Inspector Arun Pandey, the team moved towards it in a boat and found the body of a woman.
The condition of the remains indicated that the body had spent considerable time in the water.
The woman was unclothed and had visible injuries.
Using the equipment available to them, the personnel brought the remains to the riverbank.
The operation soon turned into a larger recovery effort. Within roughly two hours, the same team located three additional bodies in the river.
By Thursday and Friday, the number of recoveries from the Gandak in Uttar Pradesh had reached 10. Maharajganj accounted for four bodies, while another six were recovered in neighbouring Kushinagar.
Officials said all the victims were adults and are suspected to have been carried into India by the floodwaters originating in Nepal.
The remains, many of them badly decomposed, have been placed in mortuaries in the two districts.
Authorities are retaining them for 72 hours while attempting to establish their identities and locate relatives.
Officials are relying on every available clue.
Details of jewellery, personal belongings, tattoos, scars and other distinctive physical characteristics have been documented.
Photographs have also been circulated in surrounding areas in the hope that relatives or others familiar with the victims can provide identification.
Maharajganj Additional District Magistrate Prashant Kumar said four bodies recovered in the district included three women and a young man.
If no claimant comes forward within the stipulated 72-hour period, the administration will proceed according to applicable government guidelines, he said.
Authorities are also waiting for information from Nepal and other parts of India that could help establish the victims’ identities.
Reports detailing the recoveries have been submitted to the Uttar Pradesh government and are expected to be passed on to the Centre for further coordination and action.
In Kushinagar, disaster management expert Ravi Pratap Rai said six bodies had been recovered, comprising three men and three women.
How the Floodwaters Reached Uttar Pradesh
The recovery operation follows the flash floods that struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district on August 26.
The flooding is understood to have followed a rock-and-ice avalanche involving a large mass of glacier in the upper reaches of the Bhotekoshi river.
Farther downstream, the river is associated with the Trishuli system.
The sudden surge entered the Trishuli and subsequently the Gandak river network, carrying the effects of the disaster into downstream areas.
The Gandak runs through the broader border region adjoining Nepal, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The possibility of further discoveries has kept disaster-response agencies on alert.
Since August 27, SSB teams have been conducting continuous river patrols in shifts.
Searchlights are being used after dark, while residents living near the river have been asked to report any suspicious or unusual objects spotted in the water.
The district administrations, police and specialised response units are also involved.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the Provincial Armed Constabulary’s flood battalion are assisting operations in Maharajganj and Kushinagar.
Although the immediate danger from rising water has diminished and river levels have fallen, officials have not lowered their guard.
Residents have been advised against approaching riverbanks or entering low-lying areas as search and recovery operations continue.

नेपाल में आई विनाशकारी फ्लैश फ्लड के बाद बाढ़ का पानी भारत तक पहुंचने से उत्तर प्रदेश में गंडक नदी से 10 शव बरामद किए गए हैं।
महाराजगंज और कुशीनगर में हुई इन बरामदगियों के बाद सुरक्षा और आपदा राहत एजेंसियों ने नदी में निगरानी और तलाशी अभियान तेज कर दिया है।
मामला 27 अगस्त को उस समय सामने आया, जब सशस्त्र सीमा बल (SSB) की आठ सदस्यीय रेस्क्यू एंड रिलीफ टीम महाराजगंज की निचलौल तहसील क्षेत्र में गंडक नदी की निगरानी कर रही थी।
इंस्पेक्टर अरुण पांडेय के नेतृत्व वाली टीम को पानी में कोई वस्तु बहती दिखाई दी। नाव को करीब ले जाने पर पता चला कि वह एक महिला का शव था।
शव काफी फूल चुका था और बुरी तरह क्षत-विक्षत स्थिति में था। शरीर पर चोट के निशान भी दिखाई दे रहे थे।
महिला के शरीर पर कपड़े नहीं थे। टीम ने अपने पास मौजूद उपकरणों की मदद से शव को नदी के किनारे पहुंचाया।
इसके बाद तलाशी अभियान में तेजी आई। लगभग दो घंटे के भीतर उसी टीम को नदी में तीन और शव दिखाई दिए।
अगले दो दिनों में अलग-अलग टीमों की मदद से गंडक नदी से बरामद शवों की संख्या बढ़कर 10 हो गई।
इनमें चार शव महाराजगंज और छह कुशीनगर से मिले।
अधिकारियों के मुताबिक सभी मृतक वयस्क हैं और शुरुआती तौर पर माना जा रहा है कि वे नेपाल में आई भयावह बाढ़ की चपेट में आने के बाद बहते हुए भारतीय क्षेत्र में पहुंचे।
शवों की हालत बेहद खराब होने के कारण उनकी पहचान प्रशासन के लिए बड़ी चुनौती बनी हुई है।
महाराजगंज और कुशीनगर के शवगृहों में उन्हें सुरक्षित रखा गया है और 72 घंटे तक पहचान तथा परिजनों की तलाश की प्रक्रिया चलाने की व्यवस्था की गई है।
पहचान के लिए अधिकारियों ने शवों से जुड़ी छोटी-छोटी जानकारियां भी दर्ज की हैं।
मृतकों के पास मिले आभूषण और अन्य सामान के अलावा टैटू, शरीर पर मौजूद विशिष्ट निशान तथा अन्य पहचान संबंधी विशेषताओं का रिकॉर्ड तैयार किया गया है।
मृतकों की तस्वीरें आसपास के इलाकों में भी प्रसारित की गई हैं, ताकि किसी परिवार को अपने लापता सदस्य के बारे में जानकारी मिल सके।
महाराजगंज के अपर जिलाधिकारी प्रशांत कुमार के अनुसार जिले में मिले चार शवों में तीन महिलाएं और एक युवक शामिल हैं।
उन्होंने कहा कि निर्धारित 72 घंटे की अवधि में यदि किसी शव की पहचान के लिए कोई सामने नहीं आता है तो सरकारी दिशा-निर्देशों के अनुसार आगे की कार्रवाई की जाएगी।
प्रशासन नेपाल और भारत के अन्य हिस्सों से मिलने वाली संभावित सूचनाओं का भी इंतजार कर रहा है।
बरामद शवों की जानकारी राज्य सरकार को भेजी गई है और इसे आगे केंद्र सरकार तक पहुंचाए जाने की उम्मीद है, ताकि पहचान और अन्य आवश्यक कार्रवाई में समन्वय किया जा सके।
कुशीनगर में आपदा प्रबंधन विशेषज्ञ रवि प्रताप राय ने बताया कि वहां छह शव बरामद किए गए हैं। इनमें तीन पुरुष और तीन महिलाएं हैं।
नेपाल से गंडक तक कैसे पहुंचा बाढ़ का पानी
यह पूरा घटनाक्रम नेपाल के रासुवा जिले में 26 अगस्त को शुरू हुई फ्लैश फ्लड के बाद सामने आया।
शुरुआती जानकारी के अनुसार ऊपरी क्षेत्र में ग्लेशियर के एक बड़े हिस्से से जुड़ी चट्टान और बर्फ की avalanche के बाद बाढ़ की स्थिति बनी।
इसका असर भोतेकोशी नदी पर पड़ा, जिसे निचले हिस्से में त्रिशूली नदी तंत्र से भी जोड़ा जाता है।
तेज बहाव आगे चलकर त्रिशूली और गंडक नदी प्रणालियों में पहुंचा और इसका प्रभाव नेपाल से लगे भारत के निचले इलाकों तक देखा गया।
गंडक नदी का प्रवाह नेपाल, उत्तर प्रदेश और बिहार से जुड़े सीमा क्षेत्र से होकर गुजरता है।
शवों के आगे भी बहकर आने की आशंका को देखते हुए 27 अगस्त से नदी में लगातार निगरानी की जा रही है। SSB की टीमें अलग-अलग शिफ्ट में चौबीसों घंटे गश्त कर रही हैं।
रात के समय सर्चलाइट का इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है। नदी किनारे रहने वाले ग्रामीणों से भी कहा गया है कि पानी में कोई संदिग्ध या असामान्य वस्तु दिखाई देने पर तत्काल प्रशासन को सूचना दें।
तलाशी और राहत अभियान में SSB के साथ राष्ट्रीय आपदा मोचन बल (NDRF), राज्य आपदा मोचन बल (SDRF) और प्रांतीय सशस्त्र कांस्टेबुलरी (PAC) की फ्लड बटालियन भी शामिल है।
महाराजगंज और कुशीनगर में जिला प्रशासन तथा पुलिस के साथ मिलकर अभियान चलाया जा रहा है।
फिलहाल पानी का स्तर घटने के साथ तत्काल बाढ़ का खतरा कम हुआ है। इसके बावजूद प्रशासन ने लोगों से नदी के किनारे और निचले इलाकों में जाने से बचने की अपील की है।
अधिकारियों का कहना है कि नदी में निगरानी और बरामदगी का अभियान अभी जारी रहेगा।
