The search for people missing after Nepal’s devastating Bhotekoshi flood has entered a grim new phase, with families travelling to Chitwan carrying photographs and personal details of relatives they have been unable to contact.
As rescue teams recover bodies carried considerable distances by the floodwaters, authorities are facing a difficult task beyond search and rescue: preserving the remains and determining their identities before decomposition makes the process more complicated.
The scale of the flooding has scattered recovered bodies across a wide area. Remains found in Rasuwa and Nuwakot have reportedly been located much farther south in districts including Chitwan, Tanahun and Nawalparasi.
The movement of bodies downstream has consequently turned identification into a logistical challenge involving several districts.
Local facilities are struggling to cope with the number of bodies being brought in. With morgues in some affected districts reaching capacity, authorities have had to transfer remains to facilities elsewhere, placing additional pressure on neighbouring districts, according to a report by The Kathmandu Post.
For relatives, the journey to Chitwan is not simply about searching a list of names.
Many are arriving with photographs and information that could help officials establish whether a recovered body belongs to someone from their family.
The identification challenge has also assumed importance in India, where hundreds of families are awaiting confirmation about relatives who were travelling in the region when the disaster struck.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has said that 320 Indian nationals remain uncontactable following the disaster.
The affected travellers include people who were making their way towards Mount Kailash in Tibet, a route that has seen significant disruption amid the extreme weather and flooding.
The uncertainty has left families facing an agonising wait.
For those whose relatives remain missing, every newly recovered body carries the possibility of an answer — while the limited capacity of mortuaries makes timely identification increasingly urgent.
With bodies continuing to be recovered far from the areas where people were last seen, Nepal’s authorities are now dealing with two intertwined emergencies: locating those still missing and ensuring that those already found can be identified and returned to their families.

बाढ़ ने केवल बड़े पैमाने पर जनहानि ही नहीं की है, बल्कि प्रशासन के सामने मृतकों की पहचान का भी गंभीर संकट खड़ा कर दिया है।
कई शव उन इलाकों से काफी दूर मिले हैं, जहां से उन्हें बाढ़ का पानी बहाकर ले गया था। ऐसे में परिजनों तक सही जानकारी पहुंचाना और शवों की पहचान सुनिश्चित करना चुनौतीपूर्ण हो गया है।
रासुवा और नुवाकोट में बरामद किए गए कुछ शव बाद में चितवन, तनाहुन और नवलपरासी जैसे दूर स्थित जिलों में मिले हैं। इससे स्पष्ट है कि तेज बहाव ने शवों को उनके मूल स्थान से काफी दूर तक पहुंचा दिया।
अब समस्या सिर्फ शव बरामद करने तक सीमित नहीं है। कई जिलों के शवगृहों में जगह कम पड़ने लगी है।
क्षमता से अधिक शव आने के कारण उन्हें दूसरे जिलों की सुविधाओं में भेजा जा रहा है।
इससे उन इलाकों के शवगृहों पर भी अतिरिक्त दबाव बन रहा है, जहां शवों को सुरक्षित रखा जा रहा है।
द काठमांडू पोस्ट की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार प्रशासन इस बढ़ते दबाव से निपटने की कोशिश कर रहा है।
चितवन पहुंच रहे परिवार अपने साथ लापता रिश्तेदारों की तस्वीरें और पहचान से जुड़ी जानकारी लेकर आ रहे हैं।
उनका उद्देश्य बरामद शवों में अपने प्रियजनों की पहचान करना और लंबे समय से जारी अनिश्चितता को समाप्त करना है।
इस संकट पर भारत की भी करीबी नजर है। विदेश मंत्रालय के मुताबिक, आपदा के बाद 320 भारतीय नागरिकों से अब तक संपर्क नहीं हो पाया है।
प्रभावित क्षेत्र से होकर बड़ी संख्या में भारतीय यात्रा कर रहे थे, जिनमें तिब्बत स्थित कैलाश पर्वत की यात्रा पर जाने वाले श्रद्धालु भी शामिल थे।
नेपाल में जारी पहचान प्रक्रिया का महत्व इसलिए और बढ़ गया है क्योंकि समय बीतने के साथ शवों की पहचान करना कठिन हो सकता है।
परिजनों के लिए बरामद होने वाला प्रत्येक शव एक ओर उम्मीद जगाता है कि शायद उनके लापता रिश्तेदार के बारे में पता चल जाए, तो दूसरी ओर यह आशंका भी बढ़ाता है कि उन्हें किसी अनहोनी की पुष्टि का सामना करना पड़ सकता है।
बाढ़ के पानी ने लोगों को अलग-अलग इलाकों में बिखेर दिया है और अब प्रशासन को भी इसी बिखराव के बीच जवाब तलाशना पड़ रहा है।
एक तरफ अभी भी लापता लोगों की खोज जारी है, वहीं दूसरी तरफ बरामद शवों को सुरक्षित रखना और उनकी पहचान कराना उतनी ही बड़ी प्राथमिकता बन गई है।
