Nepal Flash Floods: 29 Bhopal Pilgrims Vanish After Desperate Final Call to Family
A group of 29 relatives from Bhopal, travelling to Gosainkunda for Sawan Purnima, lost contact after taking refuge in a house as floodwaters surged; their families are still waiting for news.
A pilgrimage that began as a family journey to Nepal’s sacred Gosainkunda has turned into a desperate search for 29 people from Bhopal, after their relatives lost contact with them amid devastating flash floods.
For the families back home, the last known moments of the group came through a brief telephone conversation on Thursday morning.
Around 9:30 am, relatives heard that the pilgrims were scrambling towards higher ground as floodwaters swept through the area.
The conversation soon took a frightening turn. According to Devki Adhikari, her relatives said they had attempted to find refuge at a resident’s house after climbing towards safer ground.
But the rising water had already begun entering the building.
The family’s final message was a plea to look after their children.
The call did not immediately disconnect. Instead, the relatives on the other end could hear the line remaining open even after the voices fell silent.
Repeated attempts to get a response brought no answer. Since then, there has been no confirmed communication with any member of the group.
The missing travellers were not a single organised group of strangers.
They were members of an extended family, including brothers, their wives, sisters, brothers-in-law and other relatives living in neighbouring areas.
Krishna-Radhika Khanal and Ramchandra-Bhavati Khanal Adhikari were among those who had travelled with their families to Gosainkunda for the Sawan Purnima pilgrimage.
The disappearance has left several households in Bhopal waiting for even the smallest indication that their relatives survived.
The tragedy is unfolding against the backdrop of one of Nepal’s most severe recent flood disasters.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority reported 538 deaths and 977 people still missing, while 3,742 people had been rescued.
More than 14,000 security personnel had been deployed for search-and-rescue operations.
The disaster has also left hundreds of Indians without confirmed contact with their families.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said about 320 Indian nationals remained uncontactable, while more than 100 people of Indian origin holding other nationalities were also unaccounted for.
Separately, around 400 Indians on the Chinese side were reported safe.
For the families of the 29 Bhopal pilgrims, however, the wider numbers offer little comfort.
Their immediate concern remains intensely personal: finding out what happened after that final call from a flooded landscape.
Until authorities establish their whereabouts, the families remain caught between hope and fear, waiting for the search operations to produce an answer.

भोपाल में रह रहे परिजनों के लिए वह फोन कॉल अब उनकी सबसे अहम और भयावह याद बन गया है। करीब 9:30 बजे हुई बातचीत में नेपाल गए रिश्तेदारों ने बताया कि वे तेजी से बढ़ते पानी से बचने के लिए ऊंची जगह की ओर जाने की कोशिश कर रहे थे।
स्थिति बिगड़ने पर उन्होंने एक स्थानीय व्यक्ति के घर में शरण लेने की कोशिश की। लेकिन कुछ ही देर में बाढ़ का पानी उस मकान में भी घुसने लगा।
परिवार को बताया गया कि घर का एक बड़ा हिस्सा पानी में डूब चुका है और वहां रहना सुरक्षित नहीं है।
इसके बाद बातचीत अचानक थम गई।
परिजनों के मुताबिक फोन लाइन कुछ समय तक जुड़ी रही, लेकिन दूसरी ओर से कोई आवाज नहीं आई। परिवार ने बार-बार बात करने की कोशिश की, मगर कोई जवाब नहीं मिला।
इसके बाद से 29 यात्रियों में से किसी के साथ भी संपर्क स्थापित नहीं हो सका है।
लापता लोगों में कृष्ण-राधिका खनाल और रामचंद्र-भावती खनाल अधिकारी के परिवार शामिल हैं।
यह समूह किसी एक शहर या मोहल्ले से जुड़े यात्रियों का सामान्य जत्था नहीं था, बल्कि एक-दूसरे से पारिवारिक रिश्तों में जुड़े लोगों का बड़ा परिवार था।
इनमें भाई-बहन, पति-पत्नी, जीजा-साले और अन्य रिश्तेदार शामिल थे।
सावन पूर्णिमा के अवसर पर इन सभी ने नेपाल के प्रसिद्ध धार्मिक स्थल गोसाईं कुंड की यात्रा की थी। यात्रा के बाद उन्हें सुरक्षित लौटना था, लेकिन अब भोपाल में उनके घरों में इंतजार और अनिश्चितता का माहौल है।
यह घटना ऐसे समय सामने आई है जब नेपाल और तिब्बत के सीमावर्ती क्षेत्रों में आई अचानक बाढ़ ने बड़े पैमाने पर तबाही मचाई है।
नेपाल के राष्ट्रीय आपदा जोखिम न्यूनीकरण एवं प्रबंधन प्राधिकरण के अनुसार, 28 अगस्त तक 538 लोगों की मौत हो चुकी थी, जबकि 977 लोग लापता थे। करीब 3,742 लोगों को बचाया जा चुका था और राहत एवं बचाव अभियान में 14,829 सुरक्षाकर्मियों को लगाया गया था।
भारत के लिए भी यह आपदा गंभीर चिंता का विषय बनी हुई है। विदेश मंत्रालय के अनुसार करीब 320 भारतीय नागरिकों से संपर्क नहीं हो पाया था।
इसके अलावा भारतीय मूल के 100 से अधिक ऐसे लोग भी लापता बताए गए, जिनके पास अन्य देशों की नागरिकता है। वहीं चीन की ओर मौजूद करीब 400 भारतीयों के सुरक्षित होने की पुष्टि की गई थी।
हालांकि आंकड़ों के बीच भोपाल के इन परिवारों के लिए सबसे बड़ा सवाल अब भी वही है—उनके 29 रिश्तेदार आखिर कहां हैं।
आखिरी फोन कॉल के बाद कोई संदेश नहीं आया है। ऐसे में परिजन राहत और बचाव दलों से किसी भी जानकारी की उम्मीद लगाए बैठे हैं।
उनके लिए हर गुजरता घंटा उस आखिरी बातचीत की चिंता और गहरी कर रहा है।
