The ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ Actor Walked Away From Stardom at 42, Lost Nearly Everything to Farming, and Found His Way Back Through Faith and Family

In 2017, at the age of 42, Rajesh Kumar was at the peak of his television career. He had made the nation laugh as the lovably dramatic Rosesh Sarabhai in the cult sitcom ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’.

He was a household name, a familiar face in shows like ‘Baa Bahoo Aur Baby’, ‘Neeli Chatri Waale’, and ‘Yam Kisi Se Kam Nahin’.

Then, he walked away. He returned to his village, Barma in Gaya, Bihar, to take up farming. “I wanted to change how people looked at farming,” he later said. “I wanted urban youth to see it as a viable, dignified career.”

The decision was not a whim. It was driven by a deeper question.

“What am I doing for the next generation?” he recalls asking himself. His father initially thought it was a passing fancy—”2-3 mahine ka bhoot hai”—, but Rajesh was determined.

He threw himself into organic agriculture with characteristic enthusiasm, renting 20 acres of land in Palghar and planting over 15,000 saplings.

What followed was a brutal series of setbacks. An unexpected flood—in an area that had never seen flooding in 30 years—wiped out everything.

Then came the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. Three separate attempts at farming failed in succession. The financial fallout was devastating. “I lost everything I had saved,” Rajesh recalled.

EMIs began to bounce. Credit card recovery agents started calling the watchman’s cabin downstairs, abusing him because he couldn’t pay.

He sold his car—the last vehicle he owned, an Eco Car—and handed it over to his farmers in Nashik because he couldn’t pay them.

At his lowest point, while on a 24-day shoot in the UK for the film ‘Binny and Family’, he had just ₹2,500 left in his bank account. “I couldn’t even bring back chocolates for my kids,” he said.

The humiliation was compounded when he set up a small vegetable cart outside his son’s school to make ends meet.

His son, who was in third grade at the time, would go to his teachers and say, “Would you please buy vegetables from my dad?” “That pain was real,” Rajesh later reflected.

By the time the dust settled, he had accumulated a debt of over ₹2 crore.

Yet, amidst this financial ruin, Rajesh Kumar never allowed himself to sink into depression.

He credits his family—his wife and children—for pulling him through the lowest phase of his life.

But it was spirituality that became his anchor. “I think it was all part of God’s plan,” he told Screen.

“Those five years transformed me as a human being. I became more real, more grounded. I came to understand the depths of suffering, how much pain a person can endure.”

He found solace in the belief that his struggles were part of a divine design, a lesson that would eventually make him a better actor and a more complete human being.

In 2022, after five years of relentless struggle, Rajesh Kumar made his acting comeback. He received a call to play the role of a maths teacher in the second season of ‘Kota Factory’.

Since then, he has starred in a string of successful projects, including the blockbuster ‘Saiyaara’, which has grossed over ₹450 crore worldwide.

Today, his ₹2 crore debt is down to just 10-15 per cent—approximately ₹20 lakh. Remarkably, his two sisters, who had been settled in the US and Finland for over 25 years, quit their high-paying jobs to join him on his Bihar farm.

“After I became obsessed with agriculture, my sisters decided to join me,” he said.

Rajesh Kumar’s story is not one of failure, but of profound transformation. It is a testament to the power of faith, the resilience of the human spirit, and the quiet strength that comes from losing everything and finding yourself.

फिर कोविड-19 महामारी और लॉकडाउन आया। खेती के तीन अलग-अलग प्रयास लगातार विफल रहे। वित्तीय परिणाम विनाशकारी था। राजेश ने याद किया, “मैंने अपनी सारी बचत खो दी।” ईएमआई बाउंस होने लगीं।

क्रेडिट कार्ड रिकवरी एजेंट नीचे वॉचमैन के केबिन में फोन करके उनका अपमान करने लगे क्योंकि वे भुगतान नहीं कर पा रहे थे। उन्होंने अपनी कार बेच दी—आखिरी वाहन जो उनके पास था, एक इको कार—और उसे नाशिक में अपने किसानों को दे दिया क्योंकि वे उन्हें भुगतान नहीं कर पा रहे थे।

अपने सबसे निचले स्तर पर, ‘बिनी एंड फैमिली’ फिल्म की शूटिंग के लिए यूके में 24 दिनों की शूटिंग के दौरान, उनके बैंक खाते में केवल ₹2,500 बचे थे। उन्होंने कहा, “मैं अपने बच्चों के लिए चॉकलेट भी नहीं ला सका।”

अपमान तब और बढ़ गया जब उन्होंने गुज़ारा करने के लिए अपने बेटे के स्कूल के बाहर एक छोटी सब्जी की गाड़ी लगाई।
