Nepal flood disaster leaves 288 Indians out of contact and nearly 1,500 people missing across Nepal and Tibet. India has sent 47 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and intensified emergency support.
As catastrophic flooding and mudslides devastate parts of Nepal and Tibet, New Delhi says hundreds of Indians remain out of contact, while rescue agencies battle difficult terrain to locate nearly 1,500 missing people.
New Delhi/Kathmandu: India has intensified its humanitarian response to the devastating floods and mudslides that have struck Nepal and adjoining parts of Tibet, as the Ministry of External Affairs said 288 Indian nationals remain out of contact amid one of the region’s worst recent disasters.
The crisis has also left around 200 Indians undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra stranded on the Chinese side of the border, according to the ministry. At least 21 people from Tamil Nadu have been rescued.
The disaster has spread across the Himalayan region, with nearly 1,500 people reported missing in Nepal and Tibet.
Available figures indicate that Indians form the largest group of missing foreign tourists, followed by citizens from the United States, Ukraine and Malaysia.
Nepalese police have reported at least 270 deaths after powerful flash floods swept through settlements in areas close to the border.
In Tibet, authorities have reported 558 people missing, including foreign nationals. Chinese state media has also reported three deaths in the affected Tibetan region.
The flooding is believed to have followed a massive mudslide in Nepal’s Rasuwa district near the Tibet border.
Rescue workers are continuing their search for hundreds of people, while experts are examining whether an ice-and-rock avalanche associated with a glacier, potentially triggered by seismic activity, may have caused the disaster.
India has already delivered 47 tonnes of humanitarian assistance to Nepal.
The latest consignment includes 37.5 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief material, medicines and food packets.
The Ministry of External Affairs said the second shipment was handed over to Nepal’s Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Mahabir Pun.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India would continue to stand with Nepal and support its rescue and relief operations.
With search operations continuing, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu has issued emergency helplines for Indian citizens and families seeking assistance.

The Nepal government has sought assistance from both India and China as emergency teams struggle to reach some of the worst-hit locations.
The difficult mountain landscape, damaged routes and the widespread scale of destruction have made the search operation increasingly challenging.
Authorities have warned residents and travellers to remain away from the banks of major rivers, including the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani, because of continuing risks associated with high water levels and unstable conditions.
Nepal has also turned to private aviation to speed up relief deliveries.
More than 40 charter helicopter sorties departed from Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Thursday to transport supplies to flood-affected districts, including Rasuwa.
The operation was coordinated by the Nepal Army, whose personnel supervised the movement of relief materials from a central collection point to helicopters before they were flown to disaster-hit areas.
Meanwhile, the Gujarat government said 12 people from the state remain missing in the Nepal disaster.
The group includes four non-resident Indians, adding to the concern over the large number of Indian nationals whose whereabouts have not yet been confirmed.
The disaster has brought an urgent focus on the safety of tourists and pilgrims travelling through the Himalayan region.
With rescue teams still searching across remote and dangerous terrain, authorities in Nepal, India and China are working to establish contact with those missing and provide aid to communities cut off by the catastrophe.

नई दिल्ली/काठमांडू: नेपाल में आई भीषण बाढ़ और भूस्खलन ने हिमालयी क्षेत्र में बड़े मानवीय संकट को जन्म दिया है।
भारत के विदेश मंत्रालय के अनुसार, अब भी 288 भारतीय नागरिकों से संपर्क स्थापित नहीं हो सका है, जबकि नेपाल और तिब्बत के प्रभावित इलाकों में करीब 1,500 लोग लापता बताए जा रहे हैं।
विदेश मंत्रालय ने बताया कि कैलाश मानसरोवर यात्रा पर गए लगभग 200 भारतीय चीन की ओर फंसे हुए हैं। राहत अभियान के दौरान तमिलनाडु के 21 लोगों को सुरक्षित निकाला गया है।
लापता लोगों में भारतीय पर्यटकों की संख्या सबसे अधिक बताई जा रही है। इसके बाद अमेरिका, यूक्रेन और मलेशिया के नागरिकों के लापता होने की सूचना है।
हालांकि, अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों से मिल रहे आंकड़ों में बदलाव की संभावना बनी हुई है क्योंकि बचाव एजेंसियां लगातार नई जानकारी जुटा रही हैं।
नेपाल पुलिस के मुताबिक, सीमावर्ती इलाकों में अचानक आई बाढ़ से कम से कम 270 लोगों की मौत हुई है।
दूसरी ओर, तिब्बत में 558 लोगों के लापता होने की सूचना है। चीनी सरकारी मीडिया के अनुसार, प्रभावित क्षेत्र में तीन लोगों की मौत हुई है और लापता लोगों में बड़ी संख्या विदेशी नागरिकों की है।
सबसे अधिक प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में नेपाल का रसुवा जिला शामिल है, जहां तिब्बत सीमा के निकट बड़े पैमाने पर भूस्खलन के बाद विनाशकारी बाढ़ की स्थिति पैदा हुई।
विशेषज्ञ इस संभावना की जांच कर रहे हैं कि ग्लेशियर से जुड़ा बर्फ और चट्टानों का विशाल हिमस्खलन इस आपदा का प्रमुख कारण हो सकता है।
कुछ विशेषज्ञों ने संभावित भूकंपीय गतिविधि की भूमिका पर भी ध्यान देने की बात कही है।
भारत ने नेपाल की राहत एवं बचाव व्यवस्था को मजबूत करने के लिए अब तक 47 टन मानवीय सहायता सौंपी है।
विदेश मंत्रालय के अनुसार, दूसरी खेप में 37.5 टन आपदा राहत सामग्री, दवाइयां और खाद्य पैकेट शामिल थे।
भारत की यह सहायता नेपाल के विज्ञान, प्रौद्योगिकी और नवाचार मंत्री महावीर पुन को सौंपी गई।
विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता रणधीर जायसवाल ने कहा कि भारत संकट की इस घड़ी में नेपाल और उसके लोगों के साथ खड़ा है और राहत तथा बचाव प्रयासों में सहयोग जारी रखेगा।
इस बीच, नेपाल में भारतीय दूतावास ने प्रभावित लोगों और उनके परिजनों के लिए आपातकालीन सहायता नंबर जारी किए हैं।

नेपाल सरकार ने प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में राहत और बचाव कार्य तेज करने के लिए भारत और चीन से सहायता मांगी है।
दुर्गम पहाड़ी इलाकों, क्षतिग्रस्त सड़कों और व्यापक तबाही के कारण कई स्थानों तक बचाव दलों की पहुंच मुश्किल बनी हुई है।
अधिकारियों ने लोगों को भोटेकोशी, त्रिशूली और नारायणी जैसी प्रमुख नदियों के किनारों से दूर रहने की सलाह दी है। नदियों के आसपास की स्थिति को लेकर लगातार सतर्कता बरती जा रही है।
राहत सामग्री को दूरदराज के प्रभावित इलाकों तक पहुंचाने के लिए नेपाल में निजी हेलीकॉप्टरों की भी मदद ली जा रही है।
गुरुवार को काठमांडू के त्रिभुवन अंतरराष्ट्रीय हवाई अड्डे से 40 से अधिक चार्टर्ड हेलीकॉप्टर उड़ानों के जरिए रसुवा समेत कई प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में राहत सामग्री भेजी गई।
इस अभियान का समन्वय नेपाली सेना ने किया। हवाई अड्डे पर तैनात सेना की 14वीं बटालियन ने राहत सामग्री को संग्रह केंद्र से हेलीकॉप्टरों तक पहुंचाने और उसके बाद प्रभावित क्षेत्रों में भेजने की प्रक्रिया की निगरानी की।
उधर, गुजरात सरकार ने कहा है कि राज्य के 12 लोग नेपाल की आपदा के बाद अब भी लापता हैं। इनमें चार अनिवासी भारतीय भी शामिल बताए गए हैं।
बढ़ते मानवीय संकट के बीच नेपाल और आसपास के हिमालयी क्षेत्रों में तलाश अभियान जारी है।
हजारों लोगों के प्रभावित होने और बड़ी संख्या में लोगों के अब भी संपर्क से बाहर होने के कारण प्रशासन के सामने राहत पहुंचाने के साथ-साथ हर लापता व्यक्ति तक पहुंचने की चुनौती बनी हुई है।
