Netanyahu Targets Zohran Mamdani at UN, Escalating Public Clash Over Gaza
Israeli PM accuses New York mayor of antisemitism and links him to Hamas supporters; Mamdani rejects allegations as baseless
NEW YORK: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday to intensify his public confrontation with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accusing the mayor of spreading what he described as false claims about Israel and of being hostile toward Jews and the Jewish state.
Netanyahu devoted part of his roughly 40-minute speech to Mamdani, who has sharply criticised Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and previously described the Israeli prime minister as a war criminal.
The exchange has become one of the most prominent political disputes surrounding Netanyahu’s visit to New York for the UN General Assembly.
Addressing critics of Israel from the UN podium, Netanyahu accused them of distorting the events surrounding the war and said Israel had acted to prevent genocide rather than commit one.
He specifically singled out Mamdani, accusing him of aligning himself with Hamas supporters.
Netanyahu also told the assembly that criticism of Israel and Jews had consequences.
His remarks came as numerous delegates walked out around the beginning of his address, while protests against his appearance took place outside the UN headquarters.
The Israeli leader further brought Mamdani’s wife, artist Rama Duwaji, into the dispute.
Netanyahu alleged that Duwaji had previously liked social-media content that praised the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Duwaji has separately apologised for controversial language from her teenage years after old social-media posts resurfaced, saying she understood the harm caused by those comments.
Netanyahu also referred to Mamdani’s association with online streamer Hasan Piker and cited a past controversial statement attributed to Piker concerning the September 11 attacks in the United States.
The Israeli prime minister presented the association as part of his broader criticism of Mamdani.
Mamdani rejects Netanyahu’s accusations
Mamdani responded by accusing Netanyahu of using what he called “baseless lies” to defend Israel’s conduct in Gaza.
The New York mayor has consistently rejected accusations of antisemitism and has said his administration is committed to combating hate and antisemitic incidents in the city.
The dispute follows months of increasingly direct exchanges between the two men.
Mamdani has criticised Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and had previously said he would seek to have Netanyahu arrested under the International Criminal Court warrant if he possessed the authority to do so.
He later acknowledged that a New York mayor does not have such legal power.
Netanyahu had signalled before arriving in New York that Mamdani would be a target of his UN remarks.
In a video released ahead of the speech, he accused Mamdani and Duwaji of supporting or celebrating the October 7 attack, allegations that Mamdani has rejected.
The confrontation unfolded against a wider political backdrop. Netanyahu is facing an election in Israel on October 27, while his government continues to face intense international criticism over the Gaza war.
At the same time, the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes; Israel rejects the allegations and disputes the court’s jurisdiction.
Protesters gather outside UN headquarters
Netanyahu’s appearance also triggered demonstrations in New York.
Protesters opposing Israel’s Gaza campaign gathered outside the UN complex, with more than 100 people reportedly detained during one demonstration.
Among those detained were public figures and political candidates, according to reports.
Inside the General Assembly hall, the departure of numerous delegations provided a dramatic backdrop to Netanyahu’s speech.
The Israeli prime minister nevertheless proceeded with a wide-ranging defence of his government’s actions and criticism of countries and political figures he accused of opposing Israel.
The clash with Mamdani has therefore extended beyond a disagreement over Gaza policy, becoming a highly visible dispute between Israel’s prime minister and the mayor of one of the world’s most influential cities.

न्यूयॉर्क: इजरायल के प्रधानमंत्री बेंजामिन नेतन्याहू ने गुरुवार को संयुक्त राष्ट्र महासभा में अपने संबोधन के दौरान न्यूयॉर्क के मेयर ज़ोहरान ममदानी को निशाने पर लेते हुए उनके खिलाफ तीखे आरोप लगाए।
नेतन्याहू ने ममदानी पर इजरायल और यहूदियों के बारे में गलत जानकारी फैलाने तथा हमास समर्थकों के साथ खड़े होने का आरोप लगाया।
करीब 40 मिनट के अपने भाषण में नेतन्याहू ने गाजा में इजरायल की सैन्य कार्रवाई का बचाव करने के साथ-साथ ममदानी पर भी विशेष रूप से हमला किया।
ममदानी लंबे समय से गाजा में इजरायल की कार्रवाई की आलोचना करते रहे हैं और नेतन्याहू को युद्ध अपराधी भी कह चुके हैं।
नेतन्याहू ने संयुक्त राष्ट्र के मंच से इजरायल के खिलाफ लगाए जा रहे आरोपों को खारिज किया और कहा कि उनके देश ने नरसंहार नहीं किया बल्कि उसे रोकने के लिए कार्रवाई की।
उन्होंने ममदानी पर हमास के समर्थकों के साथ खड़े होने का आरोप लगाते हुए कहा कि ऐसे लोगों ने इजरायलियों को नुकसान पहुंचाया होता, अगर इजरायल ने उन्हें रोकने के लिए कदम नहीं उठाए होते।
इजरायली प्रधानमंत्री ने ममदानी की पत्नी रामा दुवाजी का भी अपने भाषण में उल्लेख किया। नेतन्याहू ने आरोप लगाया कि दुवाजी ने सोशल मीडिया पर ऐसी सामग्री को पसंद किया था
जिसमें 7 अक्टूबर, 2023 के हमले की प्रशंसा की गई थी। दुवाजी इससे पहले अपने किशोरावस्था के पुराने सोशल मीडिया पोस्टों को लेकर माफी मांग चुकी हैं और कहा था कि उन्हें उन टिप्पणियों से हुई चोट का एहसास है।
नेतन्याहू ने ऑनलाइन स्ट्रीमर हसन पिकर के साथ ममदानी के संबंधों का भी जिक्र किया। उन्होंने पिकर के पुराने विवादित बयान को सामने रखते हुए ममदानी से पूछा कि ऐसे लोगों से उनकी नजदीकी क्यों है।
ममदानी ने आरोपों को किया खारिज
ममदानी ने नेतन्याहू के आरोपों का जवाब देते हुए कहा कि इजरायली प्रधानमंत्री उनके खिलाफ “बेबुनियाद झूठ” फैला रहे हैं। ममदानी ने गाजा में इजरायल की कार्रवाई को लेकर नेतन्याहू की कड़ी आलोचना की है, जबकि वह अपने ऊपर लगाए गए यहूदी-विरोधी होने के आरोपों को लगातार खारिज करते रहे हैं।
दोनों नेताओं के बीच विवाद पिछले कई महीनों से बढ़ता गया है। ममदानी ने पहले कहा था कि अगर उनके पास कानूनी अधिकार होता तो वह अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय (ICC) के वारंट के आधार पर नेतन्याहू की गिरफ्तारी की दिशा में कदम उठाते।
बाद में उन्होंने स्वीकार किया कि न्यूयॉर्क के मेयर के पास ऐसा करने का कानूनी अधिकार नहीं है।
नेतन्याहू ने संयुक्त राष्ट्र पहुंचने से पहले ही संकेत दे दिया था कि वह अपने भाषण में ममदानी को जवाब देंगे। उन्होंने एक वीडियो जारी कर ममदानी और दुवाजी पर 7 अक्टूबर के हमले का समर्थन या जश्न मनाने का आरोप लगाया था। ममदानी ने इन आरोपों को स्वीकार नहीं किया है।
यह विवाद ऐसे समय सामने आया है जब नेतन्याहू इजरायल में 27 अक्टूबर को होने वाले चुनाव की तैयारी कर रहे हैं। गाजा युद्ध को लेकर उनकी सरकार को अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर भारी आलोचना का सामना करना पड़ रहा है।
इसी बीच अंतरराष्ट्रीय अपराध न्यायालय ने नेतन्याहू के खिलाफ कथित युद्ध अपराधों के मामले में गिरफ्तारी वारंट जारी किया हुआ है। इजरायल इन आरोपों को खारिज करता है और अदालत के अधिकार क्षेत्र पर भी सवाल उठाता है।
संयुक्त राष्ट्र के बाहर प्रदर्शन, 100 से अधिक लोग हिरासत में
नेतन्याहू के संयुक्त राष्ट्र संबोधन के दौरान न्यूयॉर्क में उनके खिलाफ विरोध प्रदर्शन भी हुए। गाजा में इजरायल की सैन्य कार्रवाई का विरोध करने वाले प्रदर्शनकारी संयुक्त राष्ट्र मुख्यालय के बाहर जमा हुए।
एक प्रदर्शन के दौरान 100 से अधिक लोगों को हिरासत में लिए जाने की खबर है। के भाषण की शुरुआत के दौरान कई देशों के प्रतिनिधि बाहर चले गए। इसके बावजूद इजरायली प्रधानमंत्री ने अपना संबोधन जारी रखा और गाजा के अलावा ईरान तथा अन्य क्षेत्रीय मुद्दों पर भी इजरायल के रुख का बचाव किया।
ममदानी पर नेतन्याहू का हमला अब दोनों नेताओं के बीच चल रहे विवाद को अंतरराष्ट्रीय कूटनीति के केंद्र में ले आया है।
गाजा युद्ध, इजरायल की नीतियों और यहूदी-विरोधी भावना को लेकर दोनों पक्षों के बीच तीखा मतभेद सार्वजनिक रूप से सामने आ चुका है।
