Trump-Xi White House State Dinner: Tech Titans, Wall Street Chiefs and Chinese Officials Share the Table
More than 130 guests attended aed the White House dinner for Xi Jinping as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Sundar Pichai, and other business leaders joined senior US and Chinese officials.
WASHINGTON: A White House state dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, brought together an unusually powerful mix of political leaders, technology executives, Wall Street figures, judges, media personalities and members of the Trump family.
The event, held on Thursday, September 24, featured 134 guests, according to the guest list released by the White House.

While the occasion was formally a diplomatic dinner honouring the Chinese president, the composition of the American guest list gave the evening a distinctly economic and technological character.
The gathering included some of the most influential figures in the global technology industry.
Among those listed were Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Amazon chairman Jeff Bezos, Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang, Apple chairman Tim Cook, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin, AMD chief executive Lisa Su, Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell, Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, Zoom founder Eric Yuan and Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra were also included on the list.
OpenAI was represented by both Altman and company president and co-founder Greg Brockman.
A diplomatic dinner with Silicon Valley at its centre
The prominence of technology leaders was striking because Washington and Beijing are simultaneously competing over several strategic areas, including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, advanced computing and access to critical technologies.
The dinner therefore brought political diplomacy and corporate interests into the same room.
The presence of executives whose companies have major exposure to China or whose businesses are directly affected by US technology policy added an economic dimension to an event traditionally associated with formal state-to-state relations.

Nvidia’s Huang, for example, is at the centre of the global semiconductor industry, while Cook represents Apple, a company with extensive manufacturing and commercial links to China.
Musk’s Tesla also operates a major manufacturing facility in Shanghai and has significant interests in the Chinese market.
For AI companies, the relationship is equally consequential.
OpenAI and Google are competing in the rapidly developing generative-AI sector, while Nvidia’s chips are fundamental to the computing infrastructure required to train and operate advanced AI systems.
The appearance of so many technology leaders consequently underscored how closely US-China diplomacy is now connected with the future of technology and global business.
Reuters had reported ahead of the dinner that leading figures from technology and finance were expected to attend, including Bezos, Pichai, Altman, Cook, Musk, Huang and Michael Dell.
Wall Street and corporate America were also strongly represented
The guest list extended well beyond Silicon Valley.
Some of the biggest names in American finance were included, among them JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon, BlackRock chief Larry Fink, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon and Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser.
Executives from Visa, Mastercard and the New York Stock Exchange were also present. The list included Visa CEO Ryan McInerney, Mastercard CEO Michael Miebach and NYSE President Lynn Martin.
Major industrial and pharmaceutical companies were represented as well. Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg, Lockheed Martin chairman and CEO Jim Taiclet, GE Aerospace CEO Larry Culp, General Motors CEO Mary Barra, ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla were among those invited.
French luxury conglomerate LVMH was represented by Bernard Arnault, while Paramount Skydance CEO David Ellison was among the media and entertainment figures on the list.
The breadth of the guest list reflected the many sectors affected by US-China relations — from finance and manufacturing to aviation, energy, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, media and technology.
Chinese delegation much smaller
The contrast between the American and Chinese sides was notable.
Xi and Peng were accompanied by a relatively small group of senior Chinese officials.
The delegation included Cai Qi, a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee and a senior aide to Xi; Wang Yi, a senior Chinese foreign-policy official; Vice Premier He Lifeng; National Development and Reform Commission chairman Zheng Shanjie; Commerce Minister Wang Wentao; Executive Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu and Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng.
Additional Chinese officials, diplomats and members of Xi’s staff were also listed, taking the Chinese contingent beyond the seven senior officials accompanying the presidential couple in the core delegation.
One notable feature was the absence of a comparable group of Chinese technology executives.
While America’s largest technology companies were heavily represented, the guest list did not feature equivalent senior executives from major Chinese technology companies such as Alibaba, Tencent or Huawei.
Trump administration officials join the dinner.
The dinner also brought together a large number of senior figures from the Trump administration.
Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance attended, as did Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Other senior officials on the list included White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, Attorney General Todd Blanche, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Education Secretary Linda McMahon and Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff.
The presence of key economic and trade officials was particularly relevant given the importance of tariffs, market access, investment and technology restrictions in the US-China relationship.
Supreme Court justices and congressional leaders attend
The guest list also extended into the US judiciary and Congress.
Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Amy Coney Barrett and Justice Brett Kavanaugh were among the Supreme Court members listed for the dinner.
House Speaker Mike Johnson was also invited, along with several members of Congress.
Their presence added another institutional layer to an evening otherwise dominated by executive-branch officials and corporate leaders.
Trump family members among the guests
Members of the Trump family were also part of the gathering.
Ivanka Trump, Eric Trump, Lara Trump, Tiffany Trump, and Michael Boulos were listed among the guests.
Arabella Kushner, Ivanka Trump’s daughter, and Viktor Knavs, Melania Trump’s father, were also included.
The presence of family members alongside senior administration officials, corporate executives and foreign dignitaries added a social dimension to an event otherwise centred on international diplomacy.
AI and technology emerge as major themes
Although a state dinner is primarily ceremonial, the concentration of technology executives offered a window into the issues shaping the broader US-China relationship.
Artificial intelligence has become one of the central areas of competition between Washington and Beijing.
Both countries are seeking advances in computing power, chips, AI models and data infrastructure, while governments are increasingly treating advanced technology as a matter of economic and national security.
The dinner came shortly after OpenAI called for greater international coordination on AI standards and argued that the United States and China should maintain dialogue over emerging AI risks.
Sam Altman’s presence at the White House event therefore came at a moment when AI policy was becoming increasingly intertwined with international diplomacy.
The semiconductor sector is another critical area. Nvidia’s Huang attended even as the company operates within a complicated US export-control environment affecting the sale of advanced chips to China.
The participation of Cook, Musk and other executives similarly highlighted how American corporations remain deeply connected to China through manufacturing, supply chains, sales and investment.
More than a ceremonial gathering
State dinners traditionally provide presidents with an opportunity to honour visiting heads of state in a formal setting.
But the guest list for Xi’s dinner suggested that the event also reflected the enormous economic stakes surrounding the US-China relationship.
The world’s two largest economies remain competitors in several strategic areas while also maintaining extensive commercial ties.
American companies rely on Chinese manufacturing, customers and supply chains, while China remains an important market for many US businesses.
That combination makes business leaders relevant participants in any broader discussion about tariffs, technology controls, investment rules, supply chains and market access.
Trump and Xi seek to manage a complicated relationship
The dinner came during a period in which Washington and Beijing were attempting to stabilise relations while disagreements remained over trade, Taiwan, technology and other strategic matters.
Reuters described the dinner as part of a broader effort by Trump and Xi to manage tensions between the two countries.
Against that backdrop, the White House guest list became significant in its own right.
It placed America’s political leadership, financial establishment and technology industry alongside China’s senior political delegation, creating a gathering that was as much a snapshot of the modern US-China relationship as it was a formal diplomatic occasion.
From Wall Street to Silicon Valley and from Washington’s political establishment to China’s senior leadership, the dinner brought together people whose decisions can influence trade, technology, investment and the future direction of relations between the two countries.
