Over 100 Delhi Police K9 Dogs Join Massive Security Operation for BRICS Summit
Sniffer dogs deployed across Bharat Mandapam, hotels and strategic locations as Delhi Police mounts extensive anti-sabotage checks ahead of foreign leaders’ meeting.
More than 100 Delhi Police K9 dogs are supporting the BRICS Summit security operation, checking Bharat Mandapam, hotels and strategic locations for explosives and suspicious objects.
New Delhi’s elaborate security arrangements for the BRICS Summit have brought the Delhi Police’s canine teams into a prominent operational role, with more than 100 K9 dogs being deployed across venues and locations linked to visiting foreign delegates.
The dogs are working as part of a security apparatus involving around 30,000 personnel.
Their task extends beyond the main conference venue, with teams conducting systematic searches of areas where a suspicious object or concealed material could potentially be placed.
At Bharat Mandapam, where the summit’s talks and bilateral engagements are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, 30 sniffer dogs and their handlers are maintaining round-the-clock coverage.
Their searches include far more than open areas.
Seating areas, staircases, gardens, parking zones and concealed corners are among the places being examined during anti-sabotage sweeps.
Hotels accommodating foreign delegates are also receiving K9 coverage.
The Delhi Police currently has 110 dogs in its K9 establishment. Each animal operates alongside a designated handler, with the handlers ranging in rank from constable to Assistant Sub-Inspector.
Security planners have distributed the remaining teams according to operational requirements.
Some are stationed at hotels, while others remain available for advance checks of markets and other sensitive locations whenever foreign guests, dignitaries or members of their families are scheduled to visit.
The New Delhi district has been given particular attention, with approximately 25 dogs assigned to the area, especially around Chanakyapuri.
The canine operation is not being conducted solely by the Delhi Police.
At selected locations, additional K9 resources have been made available by the National Security Guard (NSG), the Army and other paramilitary organisations, adding to the overall search capability.
An officer said the dogs form a key component of anti-sabotage procedures, working alongside personnel equipped with metal detectors and handheld detection instruments.
Their ability to detect concealed material provides another layer to the physical security checks being conducted at summit-related locations.
Preparation has also included simulated exercises. Delhi Police K9 teams took part in mock drills supervised by the NSG, allowing personnel and dogs to rehearse procedures before the international gathering.
The force has strengthened its canine resources this year as well. More than 50 trained Belgian Malinois, Labradors and German Shepherds were inducted from the Indian Army into the Delhi Police setup.
The responsibilities of the Dog Squad extend well beyond VIP-event security. The unit is involved in crime detection, explosive identification and narcotics detection, as well as assignments where rapid and accurate searches are required.
Established in 1967, the Dog Squad operates administratively under the Crime Branch.
Its teams work in coordination with specialist units including Mobile Crime Teams, the Bomb Disposal Squad and the Bomb Detection Team.
For major events, the K9 teams undertake comprehensive pre-event searches of venues, with particular attention to detecting explosives or other suspicious material that could have been concealed beforehand.
The unit’s identity was given a formal visual marker last year.
In September, then Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golchha unveiled the Dog Squad’s emblem, showing a dog positioned beneath the police force’s logo, along with its official designation, ‘Shwan Dasta’.
With the BRICS Summit bringing foreign leaders and delegations to the capital, the canine teams are now being used as an additional detection layer within one of Delhi Police’s largest coordinated security deployments.

नई दिल्ली में BRICS Summit को लेकर सुरक्षा व्यवस्था को बेहद व्यापक बनाया गया है। इस पूरे इंतजाम में दिल्ली पुलिस की K9 यूनिट के 100 से अधिक प्रशिक्षित कुत्ते महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभा रहे हैं।
इनकी तैनाती सम्मेलन स्थल के अलावा विदेशी प्रतिनिधियों के ठहरने वाले होटलों और अन्य संवेदनशील स्थानों पर की गई है।
BRICS सम्मेलन के लिए करीब 30,000 सुरक्षाकर्मियों की तैनाती की गई है। K9 टीमों को इस व्यवस्था में खास तौर पर संदिग्ध वस्तुओं और संभावित विस्फोटक सामग्री का पता लगाने की जिम्मेदारी दी गई है।
शनिवार और रविवार को जहां मुख्य बैठकें और द्विपक्षीय वार्ताएं होंगी, उस भारत मंडपम में 30 स्निफर डॉग्स अपने हैंडलर्स के साथ लगातार ड्यूटी पर रहेंगे। यहां उनकी तैनाती चौबीसों घंटे की गई है।
इन टीमों की जांच केवल खुले और आसानी से दिखाई देने वाले हिस्सों तक सीमित नहीं है। सीटों, सीढ़ियों, बगीचों, पार्किंग क्षेत्रों और छिपे हुए स्थानों तक की बारीकी से तलाशी ली जा रही है।
विदेशी प्रतिनिधियों के ठहरने वाले होटलों में भी इसी तरह की सुरक्षा जांच की जा रही है।
दिल्ली पुलिस के K9 दस्ते में फिलहाल 110 कुत्ते हैं। प्रत्येक कुत्ते के साथ एक प्रशिक्षित हैंडलर नियुक्त रहता है। इन हैंडलर्स की रैंक कांस्टेबल से लेकर असिस्टेंट सब-इंस्पेक्टर (ASI) तक है।
मुख्य आयोजन स्थल के अलावा बाकी K9 टीमों को अलग-अलग सुरक्षा जरूरतों के अनुसार तैनात किया गया है।
कुछ टीमें विदेशी प्रतिनिधियों के होटलों में मौजूद हैं, जबकि कुछ को बाजारों और दूसरे महत्वपूर्ण स्थानों की पहले से जांच के लिए तैयार रखा गया है।
विदेशी मेहमान, किसी वरिष्ठ गणमान्य व्यक्ति या उनके परिवार के सदस्यों के आने की स्थिति में संबंधित स्थानों की अग्रिम जांच भी इन टीमों के जरिए की जाएगी।
नई दिल्ली जिले में करीब 25 डॉग्स को विशेष रूप से तैनात किया गया है, जिसमें चाणक्यपुरी क्षेत्र पर खास ध्यान है।
इस अभियान में दिल्ली पुलिस अकेली नहीं है। कुछ स्थानों पर राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा गार्ड (NSG), भारतीय सेना और अन्य अर्धसैनिक बलों की K9 इकाइयों से भी सहायता ली गई है। इन संगठनों ने सुरक्षा जांच के लिए अपने प्रशिक्षित डॉग्स उपलब्ध कराए हैं।
एक पुलिस अधिकारी के अनुसार, K9 टीमें एंटी-सबोटाज जांच का अहम हिस्सा हैं। कुत्तों के साथ सुरक्षा कर्मी मेटल डिटेक्टर और हाथ में इस्तेमाल किए जाने वाले डिटेक्शन उपकरणों के जरिए भी तलाशी लेते हैं।
इस तरह अलग-अलग तकनीकों और मानवीय निगरानी को एक साथ इस्तेमाल किया जा रहा है।
सम्मेलन से पहले सुरक्षा अभ्यास भी किए गए हैं। दिल्ली पुलिस के डॉग्स ने NSG की निगरानी में मॉक ड्रिल में हिस्सा लिया, ताकि वास्तविक सुरक्षा अभियान से पहले टीमों की तैयारी और समन्वय को परखा जा सके।
K9 व्यवस्था को इस साल और मजबूत किया गया है। दिल्ली पुलिस ने भारतीय सेना से 50 से अधिक प्रशिक्षित बेल्जियन मेलिनोइस, लैब्राडोर और जर्मन शेफर्ड शामिल किए हैं।
हालांकि, इस दस्ते का काम केवल बड़े आयोजनों में सुरक्षा देना नहीं है।
दिल्ली पुलिस की K9 यूनिट का इस्तेमाल अपराध की जांच, विस्फोटक और मादक पदार्थों की पहचान तथा ऐसे अभियानों में भी किया जाता है, जहां तेज और सटीक तलाशी की जरूरत होती है।
दिल्ली पुलिस का डॉग स्क्वाड वर्ष 1967 में स्थापित किया गया था और प्रशासनिक रूप से यह क्राइम ब्रांच के अधीन काम करता है।
इसके जवान और प्रशिक्षित कुत्ते मोबाइल क्राइम टीमों, बम डिस्पोजल स्क्वाड और बम डिटेक्शन टीम के साथ मिलकर भी काम करते हैं।
किसी बड़े आयोजन से पहले K9 टीमों द्वारा पूरे परिसर की गहन जांच करना नियमित सुरक्षा प्रक्रिया का हिस्सा है।
इसका उद्देश्य यह सुनिश्चित करना है कि आयोजन स्थल पर पहले से कोई विस्फोटक या संदिग्ध वस्तु छिपाकर न रखी गई हो।
डॉग स्क्वाड को पिछले वर्ष औपचारिक पहचान भी मिली। सितंबर में तत्कालीन दिल्ली पुलिस आयुक्त सतीश गोलछा ने यूनिट का नया प्रतीक चिन्ह जारी किया था।
इसमें पुलिस के लोगो के नीचे एक कुत्ते की आकृति दिखाई गई है और यूनिट का आधिकारिक नाम ‘श्वान दस्ता’ रखा गया है।
BRICS Summit के लिए राजधानी में विदेशी प्रतिनिधिमंडलों की मौजूदगी के बीच K9 टीमें सुरक्षा व्यवस्था की उस अतिरिक्त परत के रूप में काम कर रही हैं, जिसका उद्देश्य संवेदनशील स्थानों पर छिपी संभावित खतरे की वस्तुओं का समय रहते पता लगाना है।
