Pakistan Displays Air Defence System Resembling China’s HQ-17A
Unidentified missile platform featured in Pakistani military video highlights expanding defence cooperation with Beijing
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has publicly displayed an unidentified air-defence platform whose configuration has drawn comparisons with China’s HQ-17A short-range surface-to-air missile system, highlighting the increasingly close military relationship between Islamabad and Beijing.
The system appeared in a promotional video released on the Pakistani military’s official X account.
According to a Bloomberg report, the footage showed a six-wheel military vehicle fitted with a prominent rectangular radar array.
Pakistan’s armed forces did not disclose the identity or designation of the weapon shown in the video.
However, the vehicle’s configuration and visible equipment have been reported as closely resembling China’s HQ-17A, a short-range air-defence system.
The HQ-17A is produced in China by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation.
The system was publicly displayed during China’s National Day military parade in 2019, bringing greater attention to Beijing’s development of mobile short-range air-defence capabilities.
The scale of China’s deployment also indicates the system’s importance within its military inventory.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies estimates that the People’s Liberation Army operates about 200 HQ-17 systems and around 50 HQ-17A units.
The Chinese system has also found buyers outside China. Serbia and Tajikistan have acquired variants of the platform, while the HQ-17AE is an export version derived from the HQ-17A design.
If the equipment displayed by Pakistan is confirmed to be an HQ-17A or an export derivative, its reported acquisition would be notable for the region.
It would represent the first reported sale of the system in South Asia.
The appearance of the suspected Chinese-origin system comes amid a broader strengthening of Pakistan-China defence links.
Military cooperation between the two countries has gained further prominence since the India-Pakistan confrontation in 2025.
Chinese-origin equipment featured prominently in Pakistan’s military operations during that confrontation.
Pakistan employed Chinese-made J-10C fighter aircraft during Operation Sindoor.
Islamabad subsequently claimed that its J-10C fighters had shot down several Indian aircraft, including French-built Rafale jets. India rejected those claims.
New Delhi, meanwhile, said its Air Force had destroyed roughly a dozen Pakistani aircraft during the fighting.
According to the Indian claim, the losses included at least five advanced fighter aircraft, among them US-origin F-16s or Chinese-built JF-17s.
The overall aircraft-loss figures from the confrontation remain contested.
Claims of battlefield success made by both India and Pakistan have been disputed, and analysts have questioned the competing accounts over the number and type of aircraft lost.
Against that backdrop, the Pakistani military’s latest display offers another indication of the role Chinese defence technology plays in Islamabad’s military modernisation, although the exact identity and origin of the air-defence system shown have not been officially established.

इस्लामाबाद: पाकिस्तान ने एक ऐसे एयर डिफेंस सिस्टम को सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रदर्शित किया है, जिसकी बनावट चीन के HQ-17A शॉर्ट-रेंज सतह से हवा में मार करने वाले मिसाइल सिस्टम से मिलती-जुलती बताई जा रही है।
हालांकि पाकिस्तानी सेना ने प्रदर्शित हथियार की आधिकारिक पहचान या उसका नाम नहीं बताया है।
यह सिस्टम पाकिस्तानी सेना के आधिकारिक X अकाउंट पर जारी एक प्रचार वीडियो में दिखाई दिया। Bloomberg की रिपोर्ट के मुताबिक, वीडियो में छह पहियों वाले सैन्य वाहन पर बड़ा आयताकार रडार एरे लगा नजर आया।
प्रदर्शित सैन्य प्लेटफॉर्म की कुछ प्रमुख विशेषताएं चीन के HQ-17A सिस्टम से मेल खाती बताई गई हैं। इसी समानता के कारण पाकिस्तान द्वारा चीनी मूल के इस एयर डिफेंस सिस्टम को हासिल किए जाने की अटकलों को बल मिला है, हालांकि इसकी आधिकारिक पुष्टि नहीं हुई है।
चीन का HQ-17A कम दूरी की वायु रक्षा के लिए विकसित किया गया सिस्टम है। इसका निर्माण China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation करता है।
इसे पहली बार 2019 में चीन की नेशनल डे मिलिट्री परेड के दौरान सार्वजनिक रूप से प्रदर्शित किया गया था।

International Institute for Strategic Studies के आकलन के अनुसार, चीनी सेना के पास करीब 200 HQ-17 और लगभग 50 HQ-17A सिस्टम हैं।
इस चीनी एयर डिफेंस प्लेटफॉर्म को दूसरे देशों ने भी अपनाया है। सर्बिया और ताजिकिस्तान इसके उपयोगकर्ताओं में शामिल हैं। HQ-17AE को HQ-17A पर आधारित निर्यात संस्करण के तौर पर विकसित किया गया है।
यदि पाकिस्तान द्वारा प्रदर्शित सिस्टम की पहचान HQ-17A या इसके किसी निर्यात संस्करण के रूप में होती है, तो दक्षिण एशिया के लिहाज से यह एक महत्वपूर्ण घटनाक्रम होगा।
ऐसी स्थिति में पाकिस्तान इस प्रणाली का क्षेत्र का पहला खरीदार बन सकता है।
यह घटनाक्रम पाकिस्तान और चीन के बीच लगातार मजबूत होते सैन्य संबंधों की पृष्ठभूमि में सामने आया है।
खासकर 2025 में भारत-पाकिस्तान के बीच हुए सैन्य टकराव के बाद दोनों देशों के रक्षा सहयोग पर और अधिक ध्यान गया है।
2025 के Operation Sindoor के दौरान पाकिस्तान ने चीन में निर्मित J-10C लड़ाकू विमानों का इस्तेमाल किया था। इस घटनाक्रम ने पाकिस्तान की सैन्य क्षमता में चीनी रक्षा उपकरणों की भूमिका को भी सामने रखा।
पाकिस्तान ने दावा किया था कि उसके J-10C विमानों ने कई भारतीय विमानों को मार गिराया, जिनमें फ्रांस निर्मित Rafale लड़ाकू विमान भी शामिल थे। हालांकि, भारत ने इन दावों को खारिज कर दिया था।
