Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari’s Remarks on Minorities Spark Outrage, India Calls Them a ‘Political Gimmick’
New Delhi/Varanasi: India on Friday strongly criticised Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari over his recent remarks on the treatment of minorities in India, dismissing his comments as a “political gimmick” and accusing Islamabad of hypocrisy.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said Pakistan has no moral authority to lecture India on minority rights, particularly given its own dismal human rights record and long history of persecuting religious communities within its borders.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India completely rejects Pakistan’s attempts to comment on the country’s internal affairs.
He asserted that New Delhi has no obligation to respond to observations made by Pakistan on domestic matters and termed President Zardari’s statement an attempt to divert attention from Pakistan’s own failures.
Jaiswal further remarked that it is astonishing that Pakistan is speaking about human rights when its record in safeguarding minorities is “deeply troubling”.
He added that Pakistan’s policies of cruelty and discrimination have systematically targeted Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Ahmadiyyas and other vulnerable communities.
Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi, members of the Muslim Mahapanchayat staged a protest against President Zardari’s statement and burnt his effigy and poster.
The protesters accused Pakistan of repeatedly interfering in India’s internal matters and condemned its comments on issues relating to Indian Muslims.
Muslim Mahapanchayat leader Abdul Basit said Pakistan should first address its own problems before commenting on India. He maintained that India’s judiciary is fully capable of resolving all domestic issues and that no external intervention is needed.
The protesters also voiced concern over reports that Pakistan has written to the Mahant of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, warning that such actions could create unnecessary disturbances and further strain relations.

नई दिल्ली/वाराणसी: पाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति आसिफ अली जरदारी द्वारा भारत में अल्पसंख्यकों के साथ व्यवहार को लेकर की गई टिप्पणी पर भारत ने शुक्रवार को तीखी प्रतिक्रिया दी। भारत ने उनके बयान को ‘राजनीतिक स्टंट’ करार देते हुए पाकिस्तान पर दोहरे मापदंड अपनाने का आरोप लगाया।
विदेश मंत्रालय (MEA) ने कहा कि पाकिस्तान को भारत में अल्पसंख्यकों के अधिकारों पर भाषण देने का कोई नैतिक अधिकार नहीं है, खासकर तब जब उसका अपना मानवाधिकार रिकॉर्ड बेहद खराब रहा है और वह अपने देश में धार्मिक समुदायों के उत्पीड़न का लंबा इतिहास रखता है।
विदेश मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता रणधीर जायसवाल ने कहा कि भारत अपने आंतरिक मामलों पर पाकिस्तान की किसी भी टिप्पणी को पूरी तरह खारिज करता है। उन्होंने कहा कि नई दिल्ली को अपने घरेलू मामलों पर पाकिस्तान की टिप्पणियों का जवाब देने की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है और राष्ट्रपति जरदारी का बयान पाकिस्तान की अपनी विफलताओं से ध्यान भटकाने का प्रयास है।
जायसवाल ने कहा कि यह आश्चर्यजनक है कि पाकिस्तान मानवाधिकारों की बात कर रहा है, जबकि अल्पसंख्यकों की सुरक्षा को लेकर उसका रिकॉर्ड बेहद चिंताजनक है। उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि पाकिस्तान की भेदभावपूर्ण और दमनकारी नीतियों का निशाना हिंदू, सिख, ईसाई, अहमदिया और अन्य कमजोर समुदाय लंबे समय से बनते रहे हैं।
उधर, उत्तर प्रदेश के वाराणसी में मुस्लिम महापंचायत के सदस्यों ने राष्ट्रपति जरदारी के बयान के विरोध में प्रदर्शन किया और उनका पुतला तथा पोस्टर फूंका। प्रदर्शनकारियों ने भारत के आंतरिक मामलों में बार-बार हस्तक्षेप करने की पाकिस्तान की प्रवृत्ति की निंदा की और भारतीय मुसलमानों से जुड़े मुद्दों पर उसकी टिप्पणियों को अनुचित बताया।
मुस्लिम महापंचायत के नेता अब्दुल बासित ने कहा कि पाकिस्तान को भारत पर टिप्पणी करने से पहले अपने देश की समस्याओं पर ध्यान देना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि भारत की न्यायपालिका देश के सभी आंतरिक मुद्दों को सुलझाने में पूरी तरह सक्षम है और किसी बाहरी हस्तक्षेप की कोई आवश्यकता नहीं है।
प्रदर्शनकारियों ने इस बात पर भी चिंता जताई कि पाकिस्तान की ओर से वाराणसी के काशी विश्वनाथ मंदिर के महंत को पत्र लिखे जाने की खबरें सामने आई हैं। उनका कहना था कि इस तरह की गतिविधियां अनावश्यक तनाव और अव्यवस्था को जन्म दे सकती हैं।
