Pezeshkian Rejects Trump’s Iran Threat at UN, Says Tehran Will Not Yield to Pressure
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected Donald Trump’s threat against Iran at the UN General Assembly while insisting Tehran remains committed to diplomacy.
UNITED NATIONS: The confrontation between Washington and Tehran took centre stage at the United Nations this week, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian using his address to reject US pressure while simultaneously leaving room for a diplomatic settlement.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, Pezeshkian presented Iran as a country defending itself against foreign military action.
His appearance came just 24 hours after US President Donald Trump used the same podium to warn that he faced a choice between negotiating an agreement with Tehran and destroying the Islamic Republic.
Pezeshkian challenged Washington’s description of Iran and its conduct during the conflict. He said ordinary Iranians had themselves suffered from acts of violence and rejected the portrayal of his country as a source of terrorism.
The Iranian president’s speech was accompanied by a visual appeal to the international community. He displayed photographs connected to an attack on a school in Minab, southern Iran, using the images to underscore his argument that civilians had borne the consequences of the conflict.
Tehran says military strength is meant to deter attacks
A central theme of Pezeshkian’s address was Iran’s need to maintain sufficient military capability to discourage future attacks.
He argued that a country unable to defend itself becomes vulnerable to external pressure. At the same time, he said Tehran did not intend to turn its military strength into a tool for regional domination.
Pezeshkian also addressed the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, making clear that Tehran would not accept the waterway being used as a means of imposing what it regards as aggression or insecurity on Iran.
The strait is a crucial route for global energy shipments, making any prolonged confrontation there potentially significant beyond the immediate region.
Iranian president refuses to concede to Washington
Pezeshkian’s remarks amounted to a direct rejection of the idea that military or economic pressure could force Tehran to surrender.
He told the UN that Iran would not yield under external coercion and maintained that his country had acted in self-defence. His language came against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter exchange between the two governments over responsibility for the conflict.
The Iranian president nevertheless stopped short of closing the diplomatic route.
He reiterated that Tehran still regarded negotiations as a possible means of ending the confrontation. That position creates a notable contrast within his speech: Iran’s leadership is presenting resistance to US pressure as non-negotiable while simultaneously keeping diplomacy on the table.
Trump had offered Tehran two stark choices.
The immediate backdrop to Pezeshkian’s address was Trump’s speech to the General Assembly on Tuesday.
Trump said he faced what he described as a major decision over Iran. One possibility, he said, was an agreement that would allow the country to rebuild and pursue a more prosperous future.
The alternative he presented was military action aimed at destroying the Islamic Republic.
Trump also defended the US military campaign, arguing that Washington had previously given Tehran opportunities to reach an agreement before force was used.
His remarks were framed around the long-running US demand that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons. Trump has said American military action was intended to address that concern and prevent Iran from again threatening other countries.
Diplomacy remains possible despite the rhetoric.c
The exchange at the UN has produced an unusual combination of threats and diplomatic signals.
While Trump publicly raised the possibility of destroying Iran, US and Iranian officials were also engaged in diplomatic contacts surrounding the UN gathering. Reports indicated that the two sides had made direct contact, offering a potential channel even as public statements remained sharply hostile.
That makes the diplomatic picture difficult to read simply as an escalation toward further military action. Both sides are continuing to issue uncompromising public statements, yet negotiations remain part of the conversation.
For Tehran, Pezeshkian’s message was that talks cannot be conducted from a position of forced surrender. For Washington, Trump’s position is that any agreement must address the issues that led the United States to confront Iran militarily.
Strait of Hormuz adds an international dimension.
The dispute also carries consequences well beyond the US and Iran because of the importance of the Strait of Hormuz to international energy transportation.
Any sustained disruption around the waterway could affect shipping, oil supplies and global markets. The US has said its forces have been involved in protecting commercial oil shipments through the strait, while Tehran has linked the waterway’s status to the broader security dispute.
That makes the diplomatic outcome important not only for the two governments but also for countries dependent on Middle Eastern energy flows.
A confrontation with diplomacy still in the background
Pezeshkian’s UN appearance therefore delivered two messages at once. Iran would resist what it considers coercion and maintain the ability to defend itself, but it was not formally closing the door to negotiations.
The address also demonstrated how sharply the two sides differ in their account of the conflict. Washington portrays its military campaign as necessary to prevent a serious threat from Iran, while Tehran describes itself as responding to attacks and rejecting attempts to force it into submission.
With both governments continuing to use strong language, the immediate challenge for diplomats is to determine whether the limited space still available for negotiations can produce a framework for ending the conflict.
For now, the UN has become the backdrop for both the confrontation and the search for an exit from it.
