Trump Rejects Iran’s Hormuz Proposal as US-Iran Standoff Deepens
Tehran had proposed a seven-day process to restore shipping through the strategic waterway, while Washington would ease its blockade; Trump says he turned down the offer.
WASHINGTON: A potential diplomatic opening between the United States and Iran has run into fresh uncertainty after President Donald Trump said he had rejected a proposal from Tehran involving the reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s remarks came after several days of reports that American and Iranian negotiators had been examining a possible phased arrangement to ease the confrontation.
Under the proposal described by officials, Iran would restore normal passage through the waterway while Washington would lift its blockade of Iranian ports. Qatar has been involved as a mediator.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said Tehran was seeking an immediate reopening of the strait because, in his assessment, the restrictions had severely affected Iran’s finances.
He said he had declined an Iranian offer that was intended to facilitate reopening the waterway.
The development comes as the conflict enters a prolonged phase, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining one of the most sensitive pressure points in the confrontation.
Tehran’s seven-day proposal
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described a plan under which the reopening process would begin after Washington formally accepts Tehran’s proposal.
According to Araghchi, the arrangement would involve a sequence of US measures during the initial days, followed by the restoration of shipping through the strait and then negotiations on broader issues.
He said the timetable would begin once the United States accepted the proposal.
Earlier reports said Iran had conveyed its proposal through mediators, with Tehran linking the reopening of the waterway to a reduction in US military pressure and the lifting of the blockade on Iranian ports.
Reuters reported that Iranian officials had given their delegation at the United Nations authority to pursue negotiations.
However, the diplomatic picture remains unsettled.
After Trump publicly said he had rejected the proposal, Araghchi said Iranian officials were still waiting for mediators to communicate Washington’s definitive position formally.
He indicated that Tehran would decide its next step after receiving that response.
Why Hormuz has become central to the conflict
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important maritime energy corridors. Its status has therefore become much more than a bilateral issue between Washington and Tehran.
Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway can affect energy supplies, tanker movements and international markets.
The possibility of reopening the route has already influenced expectations in global oil markets, with earlier reports of Iran’s proposal contributing to a decline in crude prices.
For Iran, the strait has become a major bargaining point in negotiations over the conflict. For Washington, restoring freedom of navigation is tied to its wider military and economic pressure campaign against Tehran.
US and Iran had been exploring a way out.
The latest confrontation follows a period in which negotiators from both countries were reportedly attempting to construct a step-by-step route towards de-escalation.
Reuters reported that discussions in New York centred on a possible exchange: Tehran would reopen the waterway, while Washington would remove its blockade of Iranian ports.
The idea was intended to provide an initial step towards ending the broader conflict rather than attempting to settle every disputed issue simultaneously.
Bloomberg separately reported that Qatari officials were helping facilitate the discussions between the two sides.
The negotiations followed earlier Iranian indications that Tehran was prepared to restore passage through Hormuz if the United States reduced military pressure and lifted the blockade.
Trump takes a harder line
Trump has presented the Iranian proposal as evidence that the pressure campaign is hurting Tehran.
In his comments, he argued that Iran was seeking access to the strait because the restrictions had deprived it of an important source of revenue. He also said the United States had established what he described as a major military blockade.
Trump’s rejection of the proposal contrasts with comments earlier in the week in which he acknowledged that US officials had held talks with Iranian representatives in New York.
Bloomberg reported that Trump described those discussions as very good, while negotiations were conducted through intermediaries.
The conflicting signals underline the uncertainty surrounding the diplomatic track.
Iran says conditions must be met
Tehran, meanwhile, has maintained that reopening Hormuz cannot be separated from the broader conditions of any agreement.
Araghchi has said Iran does not accept negotiations conducted under coercion and has linked movement on the waterway to specific steps by Washington.
Iranian officials have also indicated that the proposed arrangement would not automatically resolve every disagreement between the two countries.
Reuters reported that Iran’s initiative was intended as a staged process rather than an unconditional reopening of the strait.
That distinction is significant because the two governments remain divided over military operations, economic restrictions, ons and the future framework for negotiations.
What happens next?
For the moment, the status of the Iranian proposal remains unclear.
Trump says he rejected it, while Iranian officials say they are waiting for a formal response through mediators before determining their next move.
The possibility of reopening Hormuz nevertheless provides one of the few concrete areas around which a broader de-escalation arrangement could potentially be constructed.
Whether that possibility develops into a negotiated settlement will depend on whether Washington and Tehran can bridge their differences over the blockade, military pressure and the conditions governing future talks.
Until then, the Strait of Hormuz remains both a crucial international shipping route and one of the principal pressure points in the US-Iran confrontation.
