Prashant Kishor Scripts Historic Bankipur Upset as Bypoll Results Deliver Mixed Verdict Across Three States
New Delhi/Patna: The by-elections held in Bihar, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh produced a politically mixed outcome on Monday, with the biggest surprise emerging from Bihar where Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor registered a landmark victory in the Bankipur Assembly constituency.
Contesting an election for the first time, Kishor defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a seat that had remained in its possession for nearly three decades.
The result marked a significant political breakthrough for the Jan Suraaj Party. Bankipur had consistently elected BJP candidates since 1995 and was regarded as one of the party’s safest urban constituencies.
The vacancy arose after Nitin Nabin relinquished the Assembly seat following his elevation to the Rajya Sabha soon after assuming charge as the BJP’s national president.
Election Commission figures showed that Kishor secured a decisive lead over BJP nominee Neeraj Kumar, winning by a margin of more than 19,000 votes.
The contest also featured the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), making it a three-cornered electoral battle. Polling for the constituency was conducted on July 30.
While Bihar delivered a setback to the BJP, the party retained its dominance in Gujarat’s Manjalpur Assembly constituency. BJP candidate Satendrabhai Patel emerged victorious with a comfortable margin of over 30,000 votes against Congress contender Bhikhabhai Rabari.
The Manjalpur by-election became necessary after the demise of sitting BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Yogesh Patel.
Voting took place on July 30 across 260 polling stations, where officials recorded a voter turnout of 37.5 per cent.
The constituency has traditionally remained a BJP stronghold. In the 2022 Gujarat Assembly election, Yogesh Patel had won the seat with more than 1.20 lakh votes, defeating the Congress candidate by a massive margin.
Madhya Pradesh’s Datia Assembly seat, however, swung in favour of the Congress.
Party candidate Ghanshyam Singh defeated BJP nominee Ashutosh Tiwari by a margin exceeding 6,000 votes, giving the Congress an important electoral gain.
The Datia bypoll was also held on July 30 and witnessed a voter participation of 71.44 per cent. Political observers viewed the contest closely because of developments that had unfolded after the 2023 Assembly election.
The vacancy in Datia arose after Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti, who had defeated senior BJP leader and former Home Minister Narottam Mishra in the 2023 Assembly election, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by a Delhi court in a fraud case.
Although Bharti later secured bail, the conviction resulted in the by-election.
The BJP’s decision to nominate Ashutosh Tiwari instead of fielding former minister Narottam Mishra generated discontent within the party.
Mishra’s supporters staged protests after he was denied a ticket, making the election politically significant even before polling day.
Taken together, the by-election results reflected contrasting political trends across the three states.
While the BJP successfully retained Manjalpur, it suffered the unexpected loss of its long-held Bankipur bastion, whereas the Congress strengthened its position in Datia with a convincing victory.

नई दिल्ली/पटना: बिहार, गुजरात और मध्य प्रदेश की विधानसभा सीटों पर हुए उपचुनावों के नतीजों ने सोमवार को अलग-अलग राजनीतिक संकेत दिए।
सबसे बड़ा उलटफेर बिहार के बांकीपुर विधानसभा क्षेत्र में देखने को मिला, जहां जन सुराज पार्टी के संस्थापक प्रशांत किशोर ने अपने पहले ही चुनाव में भारतीय जनता पार्टी के मजबूत गढ़ को ध्वस्त करते हुए ऐतिहासिक जीत दर्ज की।
यह परिणाम जन सुराज पार्टी के लिए बड़ी राजनीतिक उपलब्धि माना जा रहा है। वर्ष 1995 से लगातार भाजपा के कब्जे में रही बांकीपुर सीट को पार्टी की सबसे सुरक्षित शहरी सीटों में गिना जाता था।
यह सीट भाजपा नेता नितिन नवीन के राज्यसभा सदस्य बनने और बाद में पार्टी का राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष बनने के कारण रिक्त हुई थी।
निर्वाचन आयोग के उपलब्ध आंकड़ों के अनुसार, प्रशांत किशोर ने भाजपा प्रत्याशी नीरज कुमार को 19 हजार से अधिक मतों के अंतर से पराजित किया।
इस मुकाबले में राष्ट्रीय जनता दल (राजद) भी मैदान में था, जिससे चुनाव त्रिकोणीय बन गया था। इस सीट पर मतदान 30 जुलाई को कराया गया था।
जहां बिहार में भाजपा को अप्रत्याशित झटका लगा, वहीं गुजरात के मंजलपुर विधानसभा क्षेत्र में पार्टी ने अपना मजबूत जनाधार बरकरार रखा।
भाजपा उम्मीदवार सतेंद्रभाई पटेल ने कांग्रेस के भिखाभाई रबारी को 30 हजार से अधिक मतों के अंतर से हराकर सीट अपने कब्जे में बनाए रखी।
मंजलपुर में उपचुनाव पूर्व विधायक और गुजरात सरकार के पूर्व मंत्री योगेश पटेल के निधन के बाद कराया गया था।
30 जुलाई को हुए मतदान में 260 मतदान केंद्रों पर लगभग 37.5 प्रतिशत मतदाताओं ने अपने मताधिकार का प्रयोग किया।
यह सीट लंबे समय से भाजपा का मजबूत गढ़ रही है। वर्ष 2022 के विधानसभा चुनाव में योगेश पटेल ने लगभग 1.20 लाख मत प्राप्त कर कांग्रेस प्रत्याशी को भारी अंतर से पराजित किया था।
मध्य प्रदेश के दतिया विधानसभा क्षेत्र में कांग्रेस ने महत्वपूर्ण जीत दर्ज की।
पार्टी उम्मीदवार घनश्याम सिंह ने भाजपा प्रत्याशी आशुतोष तिवारी को छह हजार से अधिक मतों के अंतर से हराकर यह सीट अपने नाम कर ली।
दतिया में भी मतदान 30 जुलाई को हुआ था, जहां 71.44 प्रतिशत मतदान दर्ज किया गया। इस सीट पर मुकाबले को विशेष महत्व इसलिए भी दिया जा रहा था क्योंकि इसके पीछे पिछले विधानसभा चुनाव के बाद की घटनाओं का प्रभाव रहा।
वर्ष 2023 के विधानसभा चुनाव में कांग्रेस के राजेंद्र भारती ने भाजपा के वरिष्ठ नेता और पूर्व गृह मंत्री नरोत्तम मिश्रा को पराजित किया था।
बाद में दिल्ली की एक अदालत ने धोखाधड़ी के एक मामले में उन्हें तीन वर्ष के कारावास की सजा सुनाई।
यद्यपि बाद में उन्हें जमानत मिल गई, लेकिन सजा के कारण यह सीट रिक्त हो गई और उपचुनाव कराना पड़ा।
उपचुनाव में भाजपा ने नरोत्तम मिश्रा को टिकट न देकर आशुतोष तिवारी को उम्मीदवार बनाया।
इस निर्णय का पार्टी के भीतर विरोध हुआ और मिश्रा समर्थकों ने खुलकर नाराजगी जताई, जिससे चुनाव से पहले ही राजनीतिक माहौल गर्म हो गया।
तीनों राज्यों के उपचुनाव परिणामों ने अलग-अलग राजनीतिक संदेश दिए।
गुजरात में भाजपा ने अपना प्रभाव कायम रखा, मध्य प्रदेश में कांग्रेस ने महत्वपूर्ण जीत हासिल की, जबकि बिहार के बांकीपुर में प्रशांत किशोर की जीत ने राज्य की राजनीति में एक नया अध्याय जोड़ते हुए भाजपा के लगभग तीन दशक पुराने गढ़ को ध्वस्त कर दिया।
