Taslima Nasreen Draws Parallel with Bangladesh Unrest, Urges Restoration of Awami League’s Democratic Rights
Kolkata/New Delhi: Exiled Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen has voiced concern over recent student-led demonstrations in India, saying that a brief video clip of the protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar reminded her of the chain of events that unfolded in Bangladesh during the 2024 student movement.
Although she clarified that she had not closely followed the Indian agitation, she said her country’s experience has made her cautious about mass protests that undergo unexpected political shifts.
Recalling the developments in Bangladesh, Nasreen said the demonstrations had initially appeared to focus solely on the demand for changes to the quota system.
According to her, many people believed the agitation would end once those demands were addressed.
She claimed, however, that the movement later took a different direction and alleged that Islamist fundamentalist groups eventually gained influence over it, leading to consequences that, in her view, proved damaging for Bangladesh.
The noted author said those events continue to shape her perspective whenever she watches similar protest movements elsewhere.
She explained that her concerns stem from Bangladesh’s political experience rather than from any direct assessment of the recent protest in India.
Speaking on the political developments in her home country, Nasreen expressed support for former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India after leaving Bangladesh.
She questioned the circumstances under which Hasina departed the country and argued that democratic principles require political differences to be resolved through elections rather than prohibitions.
Nasreen strongly criticised the decision to prohibit the Awami League from participating in political activities.
She maintained that banning a major political party weakens democratic institutions and said every recognised political organisation should be allowed to seek a public mandate through the electoral process.
Calling for an early reversal of the decision, the author said she hoped the restrictions imposed on the Awami League would be withdrawn so that the party could contest future elections.
She also expressed the hope that Sheikh Hasina would eventually be able to return to Bangladesh.
The Awami League was prohibited in Bangladesh in 2025 under anti-terror legislation by the country’s interim administration.
Referring to developments after the ban, Nasreen alleged that many workers and supporters associated with the party had been subjected to violence and intimidation.
Nasreen’s own life has also been marked by exile. In 1994, she left Bangladesh after receiving repeated death threats from religious extremists over her writings and views on religion.
A decade later, she shifted to India, where she has lived in exile since 2004.
Her stay in Kolkata was also interrupted in 2007 after violent protests erupted over her literary work, forcing her to leave the city.
For years, she remained uncertain whether she would ever be able to return.
Earlier this week, Nasreen visited Kolkata for the first time in nearly two decades.
Speaking after her arrival, she described the visit as deeply emotional and said she had once believed the city would always remain open to her.
She credited social activist Osman Gani Mallik and the Secular Mission for making her return possible after such a long absence.
