Prayagraj Restaurant Assault: Lawyers Protest After Advocate Allegedly Beaten Over Food Complaint
Advocates block traffic at Eklavya Crossing after advocate alleges assault, robbery and injury at Loknath restaurant near AG Office.
PRAYAGRAJ: A dispute over the quality of food at a restaurant near the AG Office escalated into a lawyers’ protest and a prolonged traffic blockade in Civil Lines on Thursday, a day after an advocate alleged that he was assaulted by restaurant staff and others.
The confrontation centred on Loknath Restaurant on Sarojini Naidu Marg, where advocate Vishnu Pandey claimed he was attacked after objecting to being served rice that was both undercooked and burnt.
The advocate, a resident of Lukerganj, had gone there with friends on Wednesday evening.
According to the complaint lodged by Pandey, the disagreement did not end after he raised the food-related objection.
He alleged that the restaurant manager and waiters became involved in the argument, following which several people joined the confrontation.
Pandey claimed his shirt was torn and that his gold chain and ₹890 in cash were taken.
He further alleged that the restaurant owner struck him with a hard object, causing him to lose consciousness.
His friends subsequently took him to hospital for treatment.
The incident triggered anger among members of the legal fraternity the following day.
Advocates first gathered at Civil Lines police station and pressed for the immediate arrest of those named in the complaint.
The protest later shifted to Eklavya Crossing, where lawyers blocked the road from around 2 pm.
The blockade continued for nearly four hours, severely affecting traffic not only around the crossing but also across adjoining parts of Civil Lines.
Police officials eventually persuaded the protesters to withdraw the blockade after assuring them that the accused would be arrested within 24 hours.
The police have registered a case based on Pandey’s complaint against the restaurant owner, its manager and unidentified waiters. The investigation is underway.
The restaurant has also become part of a larger civic controversy surrounding Sarojini Naidu Marg.
The road, which is lined by several major government offices, has previously drawn objections over the allocation of commercial spaces along it.
According to the information provided, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had raised objections to the presence of shops along the stretch during a recent meeting concerning flooding and waterlogging.
The issue of these commercial allocations is also before the Allahabad High Court.
The concern extends beyond the presence of restaurants and other establishments.
The allocation of shops along the road has been criticised for affecting its beautification and the greenery developed along the stretch.
Evening-time parking on the road frequently leaves traffic movement disorderly, adding to congestion and creating the conditions for disputes, according to the account.
The location carries particular administrative importance as several state-level institutions operate along or near the road, including the Government Press, the Uttar Pradesh Board, the Directorate of Education, Police Headquarters, the Revenue Board and the Accountant General’s office.
Thursday’s disruption therefore had an impact beyond the immediate dispute at the restaurant, bringing renewed attention to traffic management and commercial activity along one of Civil Lines’ important government-office corridors.
Police now face the task of establishing the sequence of events at the restaurant and identifying those allegedly involved, while the lawyers’ demand remains focused on the arrest of the accused.

प्रयागराज: एजी ऑफिस के पास भोजन की गुणवत्ता को लेकर शुरू हुआ विवाद गुरुवार को सड़क पर उतर आया।
लोकनाथ रेस्टोरेंट में एक अधिवक्ता के साथ कथित मारपीट के विरोध में बड़ी संख्या में अधिवक्ताओं ने सिविल लाइंस थाने पर प्रदर्शन किया और बाद में एकलव्य चौराहे पर यातायात रोक दिया।
करीब चार घंटे तक चले चक्काजाम से आसपास के इलाकों में भी यातायात प्रभावित रहा।
मामला लूकरगंज निवासी अधिवक्ता विष्णु पांडेय की शिकायत से जुड़ा है। पांडेय के अनुसार वह बुधवार शाम दोस्तों के साथ सरोजनी नायडू मार्ग स्थित रेस्टोरेंट में भोजन करने पहुंचे थे।
वहाँ परोसे गए चावल कच्चे और जले हुए होने पर उन्होंने आपत्ति जताई।
उनका आरोप है कि भोजन को लेकर शिकायत के बावजूद उनसे बिल का भुगतान करा लिया गया और इसके बाद मामला विवाद में बदल गया।
शिकायत के मुताबिक, रेस्टोरेंट के मैनेजर और वेटरों के साथ बहस बढ़ने के बाद कुछ और लोग वहां पहुंच गए।
पांडेय ने आरोप लगाया है कि इस दौरान उनके साथ हाथापाई की गई, उनकी शर्ट फाड़ दी गई और सोने की चेन तथा जेब में रखे 890 रुपये निकाल लिए गए।
अधिवक्ता का यह भी आरोप है कि रेस्टोरेंट मालिक ने किसी कठोर वस्तु से उन पर वार किया। चोट लगने के बाद वह बेहोश हो गया। दोस्तों ने उन्हें उपचार के लिए अस्पताल पहुंचाया।
घटना की जानकारी फैलने के बाद गुरुवार को अधिवक्ताओं में नाराजगी बढ़ गई।
दोपहर करीब दो बजे वकील सिविल लाइंस थाने पहुंचे और आरोपियों की गिरफ्तारी की मांग करने लगे।
इसके बाद विरोध प्रदर्शन एकलव्य चौराहे तक पहुंच गया, जहां सड़क पर वाहनों की आवाजाही रोक दी गई।
चक्काजाम के कारण सिविल लाइंस और आसपास के मार्गों पर वाहनों की लंबी कतारें लग गईं।
पुलिस अधिकारियों ने प्रदर्शनकारियों को कार्रवाई का भरोसा दिलाया और 24 घंटे के भीतर आरोपियों की गिरफ्तारी का आश्वासन दिया। इसके बाद अधिवक्ताओं ने जाम समाप्त किया।
पुलिस ने विष्णु पांडेय की तहरीर के आधार पर रेस्टोरेंट मालिक, मैनेजर और अज्ञात वेटरों के खिलाफ मुकदमा दर्ज किया है। अब पुलिस घटनास्थल से जुड़े तथ्यों और शिकायत में लगाए गए आरोपों की जांच कर रही है।
रेस्टोरेंट से जुड़ा विवाद सड़क की व्यवस्था तक पहुंचा
जिस स्थान पर यह विवाद हुआ, वह सरोजनी नायडू मार्ग पर है। यह इलाका पहले से ही व्यावसायिक गतिविधियों, पार्किंग और यातायात व्यवस्था को लेकर चर्चा में रहा है।
उपलब्ध जानकारी के मुताबिक, इस मार्ग पर दुकानों और रेस्टोरेंट के आवंटन को लेकर मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ भी आपत्ति जता चुके हैं।
बाढ़ और जलभराव की स्थिति को लेकर हुई हालिया बैठक के दौरान मुख्यमंत्री ने इस मार्ग पर दुकानों के आवंटन पर नाराजगी व्यक्त की थी। इस मामले से संबंधित विवाद हाईकोर्ट में भी लंबित है।
मार्ग पर व्यावसायिक प्रतिष्ठानों के कारण सड़क के सौंदर्यीकरण और विकसित हरित क्षेत्र पर असर पड़ने की बात कही गई है।
शाम के समय सड़क किनारे बेतरतीब वाहनों की पार्किंग से यातायात बाधित होने की शिकायत भी सामने आती रही है।
सरोजनी नायडू मार्ग की अहमियत इसलिए भी अधिक है क्योंकि इसके आसपास कई महत्वपूर्ण सरकारी संस्थान स्थित हैं।
इनमें राजकीय मुद्रणालय, यूपी बोर्ड, शिक्षा निदेशालय, पुलिस मुख्यालय, राजस्व परिषद और एजी कार्यालय जैसे प्रमुख संस्थान शामिल हैं।
इस लिहाज से गुरुवार का विरोध केवल एक रेस्टोरेंट में हुए कथित विवाद तक सीमित नहीं रहा।
मारपीट के आरोपों पर कार्रवाई की मांग के साथ सड़क पर उतरे अधिवक्ताओं के प्रदर्शन ने इलाके की यातायात व्यवस्था और इस महत्वपूर्ण मार्ग पर व्यावसायिक गतिविधियों से जुड़े पुराने सवालों को भी सामने ला दिया।
फिलहाल पुलिस के सामने शिकायत में लगाए गए आरोपों की जांच करने, घटना में शामिल बताए जा रहे लोगों की पहचान करने और मामले में आगे की कार्रवाई सुनिश्चित करने की चुनौती है।
