Rahul Gandhi Stages Sit-In Outside PM Residence, Seeks Modi and Amit Shah’s Resignation Over Student Protest Crackdown
New Delhi: Intensifying its offensive against the Union government over the Delhi Police action against demonstrators marching towards Parliament, the Congress on Tuesday escalated the political confrontation as Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a sit-in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence.
Joining him at the demonstration were Congress general secretary and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with several senior party leaders.
After reaching 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the Congress delegation sat on the road, raising slogans against the government and demanding the immediate resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
As the protest unfolded, the Centre deputed Union Minister Jitendra Singh to engage with the agitating leaders.
Meanwhile, more Congress MPs and party workers were reported to be heading towards the protest venue to express solidarity.
Explaining the reason behind the demonstration, Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X that the Congress leadership had marched to the Prime Minister’s residence to seek answers over what he described as the brutal treatment meted out to students during the previous day’s police action.
Accusing the government of jeopardising the aspirations of the country’s youth, he asserted that both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister should accept responsibility and resign.
At the same time, police officials repeatedly appealed to the Congress leaders to call off the protest, pointing out that the Prime Minister’s residence falls within one of the Capital’s most sensitive security zones.
Visuals released by the Congress on social media showed Rahul Gandhi distributing plastic zip ties among fellow protesters before the demonstration gathered pace.
Party leaders were seen fastening their wrists together with the ties, apparently to make it difficult for police personnel to separate or detain them individually.
Simultaneously, Delhi Police erected additional barricades on roads leading to Lok Kalyan Marg to prevent more protesters from reaching the venue.
Reiterating the party’s position, Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain said their demand was straightforward and centred on fixing political accountability by seeking the Prime Minister’s resignation.
Only hours before beginning the sit-in, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had visited Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital to enquire about the condition of people injured during Monday’s police action against demonstrators participating in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-organised march.
The protest organised by the CJP had been aimed at pressing for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged question paper leaks ahead of competitive examinations.
The march towards Parliament was stopped by police, leading to clashes in which several protesters sustained injuries.
A Congress parliamentarian revealed that the decision to stage the protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence was kept under wraps to prevent the police from getting advance information.
According to the MP, party legislators were initially asked to gather at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to greet him on his birthday.
It was only after they assembled there that they were informed about the plan to proceed to the Prime Minister’s residence for the sit-in.
The lawmaker said the move came as a surprise even to many Members of Parliament, underscoring the secrecy with which the programme had been organised.
Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan, who happened to be in the national capital on an official visit, also joined the agitation shortly after learning about the protest.
Sources said he was at Kerala House when he received information about the demonstration and immediately left to stand alongside the Congress leadership.
Earlier in the day, Rahul Gandhi mounted a sharp attack on the Centre while addressing mediapersons inside Parliament.
Condemning the police action against the student protesters, he said the manner in which young people had been treated was completely unacceptable.
He argued that India’s youth were already grappling with shrinking employment opportunities and that competitive examinations remained one of the few legitimate avenues available to build their future.
According to him, repeated irregularities in the examination system had now eroded even that hope, leaving students anxious and disillusioned.
Emphasising that the agitation reflected a much deeper crisis, the Leader of the Opposition said the issue extended far beyond the education sector.
In his view, the protests represented the frustration of an entire generation that believed its future was slipping away.
Rather than addressing shortcomings in the education and examination systems, he alleged, the government had chosen to suppress dissent through force instead of initiating meaningful reforms.
Continuing his criticism, Rahul Gandhi maintained that although Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should be held accountable and resign over the examination controversies, responsibility for the police action rested with the Union Home Ministry.
He asserted that Home Minister Amit Shah should also step down, adding that since the Home Minister functions under the leadership of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi too must accept political responsibility for the developments and resign.
The Congress’ surprise protest outside the Prime Minister’s residence has further intensified the political confrontation between the Opposition and the Centre over the handling of student demonstrations and allegations surrounding competitive examination paper leaks.
With the party appearing determined to sustain its campaign, the issue is expected to dominate the political discourse both inside and outside Parliament in the coming days

नई दिल्ली: संसद की ओर कूच कर रहे प्रदर्शनकारियों पर दिल्ली पुलिस की कार्रवाई को लेकर केंद्र सरकार के खिलाफ अपना हमला और तेज करते हुए कांग्रेस ने मंगलवार को राजनीतिक संघर्ष को नई धार दी।
लोकसभा में नेता प्रतिपक्ष राहुल गांधी ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी के आधिकारिक आवास के बाहर धरना देकर सरकार को सीधे कटघरे में खड़ा कर दिया।
राहुल गांधी के साथ कांग्रेस महासचिव एवं वायनाड सांसद प्रियंका गांधी वाड्रा सहित पार्टी के कई वरिष्ठ नेता भी मौजूद रहे। 7, लोक कल्याण मार्ग पहुंचने के बाद सभी नेता सड़क पर बैठ गए और प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी तथा केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह के इस्तीफे की मांग करते हुए जोरदार नारेबाजी की।
हालात को संभालने के लिए केंद्र सरकार ने केंद्रीय मंत्री जितेंद्र सिंह को प्रदर्शन स्थल पर भेजा, जिन्होंने राहुल गांधी और अन्य नेताओं से बातचीत शुरू की।
इस बीच कांग्रेस के अनेक सांसदों और कार्यकर्ताओं के भी धरना स्थल पर पहुंचने की खबरें सामने आने लगीं।
सोशल मीडिया मंच एक्स पर जारी अपने संदेश में राहुल गांधी ने कहा कि कांग्रेस नेताओं ने प्रधानमंत्री आवास तक मार्च इसलिए किया क्योंकि वे छात्रों पर हुई कथित पुलिस ज्यादती का जवाब चाहते हैं।
उन्होंने आरोप लगाया कि सरकार ने देश के युवाओं के भविष्य के साथ खिलवाड़ किया है और इस पूरे घटनाक्रम की नैतिक जिम्मेदारी प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी तथा केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह को लेते हुए अपने पदों से इस्तीफा देना चाहिए।
दूसरी ओर, पुलिस अधिकारियों ने कांग्रेस नेताओं से धरना समाप्त करने की अपील करते हुए कहा कि प्रधानमंत्री का आवास देश के सबसे संवेदनशील उच्च सुरक्षा क्षेत्रों में शामिल है।
कांग्रेस की ओर से सोशल मीडिया पर साझा किए गए एक वीडियो में राहुल गांधी अपने साथियों को प्लास्टिक के ज़िप टाई बांटते दिखाई दिए। इसके बाद प्रदर्शनकारी नेताओं ने अपने हाथ आपस में बांध लिए ताकि पुलिस के लिए उन्हें अलग-अलग हिरासत में लेना आसान न हो।
इसी दौरान दिल्ली पुलिस ने लोक कल्याण मार्ग की ओर जाने वाले रास्तों पर अतिरिक्त बैरिकेडिंग कर दी, जिससे अन्य प्रदर्शनकारियों को धरना स्थल तक पहुंचने से रोका जा सके।
कांग्रेस सांसद सैयद नसीर हुसैन ने कहा कि पार्टी की मांग बिल्कुल स्पष्ट है और सरकार को जवाबदेही तय करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री का इस्तीफा लेना चाहिए।
धरना शुरू होने से कुछ घंटे पहले राहुल गांधी और प्रियंका गांधी वाड्रा दिल्ली स्थित राम मनोहर लोहिया अस्पताल पहुंचे थे, जहां उन्होंने सोमवार को कॉकरोच जनता पार्टी (सीजेपी) के प्रदर्शन के दौरान पुलिस कार्रवाई में घायल हुए लोगों का हालचाल जाना।
सीजेपी ने संसद मार्च का आयोजन केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान के इस्तीफे की मांग को लेकर किया था। पार्टी का आरोप था कि विभिन्न प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं से पहले प्रश्नपत्र लीक होने की घटनाओं ने लाखों युवाओं के भविष्य पर गंभीर सवाल खड़े कर दिए हैं।
प्रदर्शनकारी जब संसद की ओर बढ़ रहे थे, तब पुलिस ने उन्हें रास्ते में रोक दिया, जिसके बाद हुई कार्रवाई में कई लोग घायल हो गए।
कांग्रेस के एक सांसद ने बताया कि प्रधानमंत्री आवास के बाहर धरना देने की पूरी योजना को बेहद गोपनीय रखा गया था ताकि पुलिस को पहले से इसकी भनक न लग सके।
उनके अनुसार सभी सांसदों को पहले कांग्रेस अध्यक्ष मल्लिकार्जुन खड़गे के जन्मदिन पर शुभकामनाएं देने के लिए उनके आवास बुलाया गया था।
वहां पहुंचने के बाद ही पार्टी नेतृत्व ने अचानक घोषणा की कि सभी नेताओं को प्रधानमंत्री आवास के बाहर विरोध प्रदर्शन के लिए रवाना होना है। सांसद ने कहा कि यह फैसला अधिकांश सांसदों के लिए भी पूरी तरह अप्रत्याशित था।
दिल्ली दौरे पर आए केरल के मुख्यमंत्री वी.डी. सतीशन भी इस विरोध प्रदर्शन में शामिल हुए। बताया गया कि वह उस समय केरल हाउस में मौजूद थे। जैसे ही उन्हें धरने की जानकारी मिली, वह तुरंत कांग्रेस नेताओं के साथ प्रदर्शन स्थल पर पहुंच गए।
इससे पहले संसद परिसर में पत्रकारों से बातचीत करते हुए राहुल गांधी ने छात्र आंदोलन पर हुई पुलिस कार्रवाई की तीखी आलोचना की।
उन्होंने कहा कि देश के युवाओं के साथ इस तरह का व्यवहार किसी भी लोकतांत्रिक व्यवस्था में स्वीकार नहीं किया जा सकता।
उनके अनुसार आज युवाओं के सामने रोजगार के अवसर लगातार कम होते जा रहे हैं और प्रतियोगी परीक्षाएं ही उनके भविष्य की सबसे बड़ी उम्मीद बची हैं।
लेकिन परीक्षा प्रणाली में बार-बार सामने आ रही अनियमितताओं ने उस उम्मीद को भी कमजोर कर दिया है।
राहुल गांधी ने कहा कि यह विवाद केवल शिक्षा व्यवस्था तक सीमित नहीं है, बल्कि यह देश के करोड़ों युवाओं के भविष्य और उनके भीतर बढ़ रही निराशा का प्रतीक बन चुका है।
उनका कहना था कि सरकार को शिक्षा और परीक्षा प्रणाली में सुधार करने की दिशा में ठोस कदम उठाने चाहिए थे, लेकिन इसके बजाय उसने अपनी आवाज उठा रहे छात्रों पर बल प्रयोग का रास्ता अपनाया।
अपनी बात को आगे बढ़ाते हुए कांग्रेस नेता ने कहा कि प्रश्नपत्र लीक के मामलों को लेकर केंद्रीय शिक्षा मंत्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान को नैतिक जिम्मेदारी लेते हुए इस्तीफा देना चाहिए।
हालांकि उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि छात्रों पर हुई पुलिस कार्रवाई के लिए केवल शिक्षा मंत्री नहीं, बल्कि केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह भी समान रूप से जिम्मेदार हैं।
राहुल गांधी ने आरोप लगाया कि गृह मंत्रालय की जवाबदेही अंततः प्रधानमंत्री तक जाती है, इसलिए प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी को भी इस पूरे घटनाक्रम की राजनीतिक जिम्मेदारी स्वीकार करते हुए अपने पद से इस्तीफा देना चाहिए।
प्रधानमंत्री आवास के बाहर कांग्रेस का यह अचानक शुरू हुआ धरना छात्र आंदोलनों, प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं में कथित अनियमितताओं और पुलिस कार्रवाई को लेकर केंद्र सरकार तथा विपक्ष के बीच राजनीतिक टकराव को और तेज करने वाला माना जा रहा है।
संकेत हैं कि कांग्रेस आने वाले दिनों में इस मुद्दे को संसद के भीतर और बाहर पूरी ताकत से उठाकर सरकार पर दबाव बनाए रखने की रणनीति पर आगे बढ़ेगी।
