NEW DELHI: Veteran journalist and television anchor Rajat Sharma has revisited a memorable association with former President Pranab Mukherjee, sharing photographs and a video from the late statesman’s public life in a tribute posted on social media.
Sharma’s recollection centred on an observation Mukherjee made years ago about his work in journalism.
According to Sharma, the former President had described him as the “public prosecutor of the people of India”—a phrase that the television journalist says has remained with him long after the occasion on which it was spoken.
The memory was shared under the hashtag RememberingPranabDa, with Sharma reflecting on the lasting significance of words spoken by the former President.
Rather than recalling the exchange simply as a ceremonial compliment, Sharma presented it as an enduring reminder of the responsibility attached to speaking for ordinary citizens.
The episode dates back to an event marking the 21st anniversary of Sharma’s television programme ‘Aap Ki Adalat’.
Mukherjee was among the prominent personalities present at the celebration, where he spoke about the distinctive public role of the programme and its host.
Mukherjee’s remarks used the language of the courtroom to describe Sharma’s journalistic position.
He suggested that the anchor did not require a formal legal qualification to perform the role because, in his view, the programme had effectively placed him in the position of representing the concerns of the public.
The former President also encouraged Sharma to continue with the journalistic style that had become associated with the programme.
His comments gave a political and constitutional metaphor to a television format built around questioning public figures.
The connection between the two men was not limited to that public appearance.
Their association acquired another dimension in 2015, when Mukherjee presented Sharma with the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards.
For Sharma, the recent tribute appears to have revived memories of both occasions—the words that Mukherjee directed towards his journalism and the national honour he presented to him.
‘Aap Ki Adalat’, which has run for more than three decades, has built its format around Sharma questioning politicians, public figures and other personalities in a courtroom-style setting.
The programme has consequently become closely identified with his style of interviewing and public questioning.
By recalling Mukherjee’s description, Sharma has highlighted a particular interpretation of that role: journalism as an intermediary between people and those who wield public influence.
Mukherjee, who served as India’s President from 2012 to 2017 and was a prominent figure in Indian public life for decades, died in 2020.
His political career spanned several major phases of India’s post-Independence history.
Sharma’s tribute now places their earlier interactions in the context of Mukherjee’s wider public legacy, while also reflecting the significance that the veteran journalist continues to attach to the former President’s words.
