Indian-American Voters Lean Strongly Democratic Ahead of US Midterms, Poll Finds

Two-thirds of Indian-American respondents favour Democratic candidates, while Trump’s standing remains weak among Asian-American voters
AAPI Data survey shows 66% backing Democrats in House and Senate races, while Trump remains unpopular among Asian-American voters

WASHINGTON: The Indian-American vote could prove considerably less favourable to Republicans in the November midterm elections than it was during the 2024 presidential race, according to a new survey that shows a strong preference for Democratic candidates among the community.

The findings from AAPI Data indicate that Democrats currently hold a substantial advantage among Indian-American respondents.

For elections to the US House of Representatives, 66% said they intended to support Democratic candidates, compared with 22% who favoured Republicans.

The Democratic lead was equally pronounced when respondents were asked about Senate contests.

Two-thirds of Indian-American voters surveyed backed Democrats, while only 18% said they planned to vote Republican.

The numbers place Indian-Americans among the Asian-American groups showing particularly strong Democratic support.

They also point to a potentially important change from the political movement seen during the 2024 presidential election, when Donald Trump made gains among sections of the community.

The shift is especially notable because the Indian-American population has traditionally maintained significant support for the Democratic Party.

About two million Indian-Americans remain part of the community, but their political preferences are not uniform, and the 2024 campaign demonstrated that Republicans could make inroads.

A Carnegie Endowment survey conducted before the 2024 election had found that 32% of Indian-American respondents intended to vote for Trump.

Support was considerably stronger among men, with around four in ten Indian-American male respondents saying they planned to back him.

The latest polling also suggests that Trump’s broader standing among Asian-American voters remains a challenge for Republicans. Around 70% of those surveyed viewed the president negatively.

Economic pressures appear to be playing a major role in shaping voter priorities.

The cost of living and inflation ranked prominently, alongside healthcare, crime and concerns over racism.

Foreign affairs have also acquired considerable importance.

Seventy-eight per cent of respondents described war and foreign policy as important or extremely important, reflecting the significance of international developments at a time when the United States remains deeply involved in the conflict with Iran.

On several issues, respondents gave Democrats a clear advantage over Republicans.

When asked which party would be better equipped to address inflation and household expenses, 44% chose Democrats, while only 18% placed greater confidence in Republicans.

The findings point to a broader problem for the Republican Party: it is not merely facing a voting-intention gap but also a trust deficit on issues that voters consider important.

Immigration and economic policy have contributed to dissatisfaction with the Trump administration, according to a separate Carnegie Endowment assessment from 2026.

That study found that 71% of Indian-Americans surveyed disapproved of Trump’s performance during the first year of his second presidential term.

The community has also shown reservations about policies associated with the administration, including tariffs and its approach to immigration.

At the same time, Democratic dominance should not be interpreted as an unconditional attachment to the party.

Identification with Democrats among Indian-Americans has declined from 52% in 2020 to 46% in 2026.

Republican identification, however, remains substantially lower, at 19%.

Concerns about racial intolerance may also be influencing political choices.

Among Indian-Americans who do not identify as Republicans, 27% said their reluctance to associate with the party stemmed from a perception that it is intolerant towards minorities.

That figure is particularly significant because it represents a 10-percentage-point increase from 2024, suggesting that attitudes towards race and inclusion have become more politically consequential for some voters.

With the midterms approaching, the polling presents Republicans with a difficult landscape among Indian-American voters.

While the community is not politically homogeneous and its partisan identification has evolved, Democrats currently retain a sizeable advantage in both congressional voting intentions and perceptions of which party can better address key domestic concerns.

AAPI Data
