Ram Temple Donation Row: UP Speaker Satish Mahana Offers to Refund Digvijaya Singh’s Contribution, Sparks Fresh Political Storm
Lucknow: Political tensions over the alleged misappropriation of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya intensified on Wednesday after Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker and senior BJP leader Satish Mahana said he was willing to return Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh’s contribution towards the temple’s construction.
Mahana remarked that devotees who had donated with genuine faith could proudly see the magnificent temple standing today, while those demanding their money back were focusing only on the allegations of theft.
The BJP leader’s response came after Digvijaya Singh recently announced that he had sought a refund of the amount he had contributed for the Ram Temple so that he could donate it instead to the Ramalaya Trust.
The Congress leader had alleged that his faith had been deeply hurt by the reported corruption linked to the handling of donations at the Ayodhya temple.
Singh has also announced a “non-political” foot march from the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain to Ayodhya beginning on October 2.
The remarks were made against the backdrop of the ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged theft of temple donations.
While the BJP has maintained that those responsible should face strict legal action, the party has simultaneously accused Opposition leaders of using the incident to cast doubts on the Ram Janmabhoomi movement and hurt the religious sentiments of millions of devotees.
Speaking to the media, Mahana said Opposition leaders were unfairly raising questions about the fate of the entire Hindu community.
According to him, people who had made contributions with devotion could clearly witness that their donations had gone into the construction of the grand temple, whereas those demanding a refund appeared interested only in highlighting allegations of theft.
He further criticised political opponents for, in his view, attempting to revive old objections to the Ram Temple movement by linking them with the current controversy.
Referring indirectly to Digvijaya Singh’s proposed march, Mahana remarked that it would have been more meaningful had such a yatra been organised in support of the temple’s construction rather than over allegations surrounding the donation controversy.
Clarifying his stand, the senior BJP leader said his comments should not be interpreted as an attempt to shield those accused in the alleged embezzlement.
He stressed that every individual found guilty must face appropriate punishment.
However, he argued that the actions of a few individuals should not be used to question the credibility of the temple, the institution managing it, or the larger Ram Janmabhoomi movement.
Mahana also criticised AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi over his recent remarks regarding the possible inclusion of a Muslim representative in the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.
Questioning the logic behind such statements, Mahana asked whether this implied that the entire Hindu community should be viewed through the actions of a handful of accused persons.
The Speaker’s comments triggered sharp reactions from Opposition parties, which accused him of making insensitive remarks and attempting to judge the faith of devotees.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress, in a post on X, sarcastically questioned whether the BJP government now intended to conduct an “audit of people’s faith.”
The Congress further alleged that Mahana’s remarks suggested that if donations had been stolen, the fault lay not with the administration but with the intentions of the devotees themselves.
The party also claimed that law and order had deteriorated in Uttar Pradesh, asserting that criminals had become increasingly emboldened while those in authority were offering “strange justifications.”
The Samajwadi Party also condemned the Speaker’s remarks, describing them as highly inappropriate and regrettable.
The party urged Mahana to maintain the dignity expected of the constitutional office he holds and avoid making statements that could hurt public sentiments or deepen political divisions.
The SP added that although it has consistently criticised the policies of the Yogi Adityanath government, it expected greater restraint and constitutional propriety from the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly while making public observations on such sensitive issues.
The controversy traces its origins to the alleged embezzlement of donations made to the Ram Temple, which surfaced in the first week of June.
Following the allegations, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter.
Subsequently, an FIR was registered on June 25 based on the SIT’s preliminary findings. So far, eight persons associated with the temple’s donation-counting process have been arrested.
Meanwhile, two office-bearers of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust—former General Secretary Champat Rai and trustee Anil Mishra—have resigned amid the ongoing investigation.

अयोध्या राम मंदिर में चढ़ावे के कथित गबन को लेकर जारी विवाद ने बुधवार को नया राजनीतिक मोड़ ले लिया।
उत्तर प्रदेश विधानसभा अध्यक्ष एवं वरिष्ठ भाजपा नेता सतीश महाना ने कांग्रेस के वरिष्ठ नेता दिग्विजय सिंह को मंदिर निर्माण के लिए दिया गया उनका दान वापस करने की पेशकश करते हुए कहा कि जिन्होंने श्रद्धा और विश्वास से योगदान दिया, वे आज उसी धन से निर्मित भव्य राम मंदिर को देख रहे हैं, जबकि धन वापसी की मांग करने वालों को केवल चोरी ही दिखाई दे रही है।
महाना की यह प्रतिक्रिया दिग्विजय सिंह के उस हालिया बयान के बाद आई, जिसमें उन्होंने कहा था कि उन्होंने राम मंदिर निर्माण के लिए दिया गया अपना चंदा वापस मांगा है ताकि वह राशि रामालय ट्रस्ट को दान कर सकें।
कांग्रेस नेता ने यह भी आरोप लगाया था कि अयोध्या राम मंदिर से जुड़े कथित भ्रष्टाचार के कारण उनकी आस्था आहत हुई है।
उन्होंने 2 अक्टूबर से उज्जैन स्थित महाकाल मंदिर से अयोध्या तक “गैर-राजनीतिक” पदयात्रा निकालने की भी घोषणा की है।
यह बयान ऐसे समय आया है जब राम मंदिर में चढ़ावे की कथित चोरी को लेकर पूरे देश में राजनीतिक बहस तेज है।
भाजपा का कहना है कि यदि किसी ने चोरी की है तो उसे कड़ी सजा मिलनी चाहिए, लेकिन विपक्ष इस घटना के बहाने राम जन्मभूमि आंदोलन और करोड़ों श्रद्धालुओं की आस्था पर सवाल खड़े करने का प्रयास कर रहा है।
मीडिया से बातचीत में महाना ने कहा कि विपक्ष के कुछ नेता पूरे हिंदू समाज की आस्था को कटघरे में खड़ा कर रहे हैं।
उनके अनुसार, जिन लोगों ने सच्ची श्रद्धा से दान दिया था, वे स्पष्ट रूप से देख सकते हैं कि उनका योगदान आज भव्य मंदिर के रूप में सामने है, जबकि धन वापसी की मांग करने वाले केवल चोरी के आरोपों पर ही ध्यान केंद्रित कर रहे हैं।
उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि जो लोग कभी राम मंदिर आंदोलन पर सवाल उठाते थे, वही अब कथित चोरी का मुद्दा उठाकर फिर से उसी आंदोलन और करोड़ों लोगों की धार्मिक भावनाओं पर संदेह पैदा करने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं।
दिग्विजय सिंह की प्रस्तावित पदयात्रा का परोक्ष उल्लेख करते हुए महाना ने कहा कि यदि ऐसी यात्रा मंदिर निर्माण के समर्थन में निकाली जाती तो उसका कहीं अधिक महत्व होता।
अपने बयान पर सफाई देते हुए वरिष्ठ भाजपा नेता ने कहा कि उनके शब्दों का अर्थ यह नहीं निकाला जाना चाहिए कि वह चोरी के आरोपियों का बचाव कर रहे हैं।
उन्होंने स्पष्ट किया कि जो भी व्यक्ति दोषी पाया जाएगा, उसके खिलाफ कानून के अनुसार कठोर कार्रवाई होनी चाहिए।
हालांकि, उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि कुछ व्यक्तियों के कथित कृत्य के आधार पर पूरे मंदिर, उससे जुड़े संस्थान या राम जन्मभूमि आंदोलन की विश्वसनीयता पर प्रश्नचिह्न लगाना उचित नहीं है।
महाना ने एआईएमआईएम प्रमुख असदुद्दीन ओवैसी की उस टिप्पणी पर भी प्रतिक्रिया दी, जिसमें उन्होंने राम जन्मभूमि तीर्थ क्षेत्र ट्रस्ट में किसी मुस्लिम सदस्य की संभावित भागीदारी का उल्लेख किया था।
इस पर महाना ने सवाल उठाया कि क्या कुछ व्यक्तियों के कथित अपराध के आधार पर पूरे हिंदू समाज को दोषी माना जा सकता है।
विधानसभा अध्यक्ष की टिप्पणियों पर विपक्ष ने तीखी प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त की। उत्तर प्रदेश कांग्रेस ने सोशल मीडिया मंच ‘एक्स’ पर पोस्ट कर पूछा कि क्या अब भाजपा सरकार लोगों की आस्था का भी “ऑडिट” करेगी।
कांग्रेस ने आरोप लगाया कि महाना के बयान का अर्थ यह निकलता है कि यदि मंदिर का चढ़ावा चोरी हुआ है तो सरकार की कोई जिम्मेदारी नहीं, बल्कि श्रद्धालुओं की नीयत ही दोषी है।
पार्टी ने यह भी कहा कि उत्तर प्रदेश में अपराधियों के हौसले लगातार बढ़ रहे हैं, जबकि सत्ता पक्ष उनके बजाय विचित्र तर्क प्रस्तुत कर रहा है।
समाजवादी पार्टी ने भी महाना की टिप्पणी को अत्यंत दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण और निंदनीय बताया। पार्टी ने कहा कि विधानसभा अध्यक्ष को अपने संवैधानिक पद की गरिमा के अनुरूप ही सार्वजनिक बयान देने चाहिए और ऐसी टिप्पणियों से बचना चाहिए, जो जनभावनाओं को प्रभावित करें।
एसपी ने आगे कहा कि भले ही वह मुख्यमंत्री योगी आदित्यनाथ की नीतियों की आलोचना करती रही हो, लेकिन विधानसभा अध्यक्ष जैसे संवैधानिक पद पर बैठे व्यक्ति से कहीं अधिक संयम, निष्पक्षता और मर्यादा की अपेक्षा की जाती है।
यह पूरा विवाद जून के पहले सप्ताह में उस समय सामने आया था, जब राम मंदिर में चढ़ावे के कथित गबन की जानकारी सार्वजनिक हुई। इसके बाद उत्तर प्रदेश सरकार ने मामले की जांच के लिए विशेष जांच दल (एसआईटी) का गठन किया।
एसआईटी की प्रारंभिक जांच रिपोर्ट के आधार पर 25 जून को प्राथमिकी दर्ज की गई। अब तक मंदिर में चढ़ावे की गणना से जुड़े आठ लोगों को गिरफ्तार किया जा चुका है।
वहीं, जांच के बीच श्री राम जन्मभूमि तीर्थ क्षेत्र ट्रस्ट के पूर्व महासचिव चंपत राय और ट्रस्टी अनिल मिश्रा अपने पदों से इस्तीफा दे चुके हैं।
