RG Kar Case Takes New Turn as Bengal CM Orders Probe Into Victim’s Cremation
Inquiry will examine circumstances surrounding cremation of the 2024 rape-murder victim as family renews demand for justice on second anniversary
Kolkata: Two years after the rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital triggered nationwide outrage, the case has acquired a fresh investigative dimension with West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordering a police inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the cremation of the victim’s body.
The Chief Minister announced the move on Sunday at a memorial programme in Panihati, North 24 Parganas, held on the second anniversary of the young doctor’s death.
He said the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was already dealing with the principal criminal case and matters relating to alleged corruption at RG Kar under judicial supervision, but maintained that the circumstances surrounding the cremation could be examined separately by the state police.
Adhikari directed the Barrackpore police commissioner to initiate the inquiry.
Questions raised over cremation arrangements
The Chief Minister’s announcement centres on the cremation at Nataghat crematorium in the Ghola police station area.
According to Adhikari, the body was listed as the third cremation scheduled at the facility that day, but the sequence was subsequently altered to make it the first.
He also raised questions about the documentation and payment procedures normally associated with cremation.
The body had undergone post-mortem examination earlier on August 9, 2024, and was cremated later the same day.
Adhikari said these circumstances warranted a separate examination by the police, even though the larger criminal investigation remains under the jurisdiction of the CBI and the courts.
Three TMC leaders named by CM
During his address, Adhikari identified former Panihati MLA Nirmal Ghosh, Panihati municipality councillor Somnath Dey and local Trinamool Congress leader Sanjib Mukherjee in connection with the allegations raised over the cremation.
The Chief Minister said those found responsible should face punishment.
The three men have denied the allegations in the past, maintaining that their involvement was limited to helping the victim’s grieving parents following the tragedy.
They could not be reached for a fresh response on Sunday despite attempts to contact them.
The allegations therefore remain subject to investigation.
Victim’s mother vows to continue fight
The memorial programme was attended by the victim’s mother, Ratna Debnath, who reiterated that the family would continue seeking justice.
“We will not rest till our daughter gets justice,” she said at the event.
Debnath entered electoral politics earlier this year and won the Panihati Assembly constituency on a BJP ticket, defeating a candidate linked to former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh’s family.
The political significance of the RG Kar case has remained considerable in West Bengal, where the issue featured prominently in the 2026 Assembly election campaign.
Second CBI investigation already under way
The cremation inquiry comes alongside a separate development in the main case.
The Calcutta High Court had earlier ordered another CBI investigation into the matter, with a three-member Special Investigation Team headed by a joint director constituted for the purpose.
The victim’s parents have repeatedly voiced dissatisfaction with the progress and outcome of the earlier CBI investigation.
That probe broadly followed the line of the Kolkata Police investigation and resulted in the conviction of former civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, who was sentenced to life imprisonment.
The family has continued to seek answers on whether the investigation fully established the circumstances surrounding their daughter’s death.
Adhikari acknowledged the family’s dissatisfaction but said the latest CBI investigation was being conducted pursuant to a court order and that the government would have to await its findings.
State hospitals observe second anniversary
The state government marked the second anniversary of the incident with a two-minute silence across hospitals in memory of the doctor.
The commemoration came as the case remained a major subject of public and political debate, with questions continuing over the original investigation, alleged institutional lapses and the broader circumstances surrounding the crime.
Adhikari said he remained committed to ensuring justice and that anyone found responsible for irregularities would face action.
Political battle remains intertwined with case
The RG Kar case has repeatedly crossed the boundary between criminal justice and electoral politics.
During the 2026 Assembly campaign, BJP leaders had prominently invoked the case, while the victim’s mother contested the Panihati election on the party’s ticket.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also campaigned in support of her candidature, according to the material surrounding the election.
After assuming office as chief minister in May, Adhikari also suspended former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and IPS officers Indira Mukherjee and Abhisek Gupta over alleged mishandling of the case and allegations concerning the treatment of the victim’s parents.
He ordered an inquiry into their conduct.
With the newly ordered examination of the cremation process, attention has now shifted to an aspect of the case that had remained outside the principal criminal investigation.
The police inquiry will have to establish whether the alleged discrepancies in the cremation arrangements occurred, who was responsible for them, and whether they had any bearing on the investigation into the doctor’s death.

कोलकाता: कोलकाता के आरजी कर मेडिकल कॉलेज एवं अस्पताल में जूनियर डॉक्टर के साथ बलात्कार और हत्या की घटना के दो साल पूरे होने पर पश्चिम बंगाल के मुख्यमंत्री सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने मामले से जुड़े एक नए पहलू की जांच के आदेश दिए हैं।
उन्होंने पीड़िता के शव की अंत्येष्टि की परिस्थितियों को लेकर पुलिस जांच शुरू कराने का निर्देश दिया है।
रविवार को उत्तर 24 परगना जिले के पानीहाटी में आयोजित स्मृति कार्यक्रम में मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि मुख्य आपराधिक मामले और आरजी कर अस्पताल में कथित भ्रष्टाचार से जुड़े मामलों की जांच अदालत के निर्देश पर CBI कर रही है।
ऐसे में राज्य सरकार उस जांच में हस्तक्षेप नहीं कर सकती। हालांकि, उन्होंने कहा कि शव की अंत्येष्टि से जुड़े घटनाक्रम की अलग से पुलिस जांच की जा सकती है।
अधिकारी ने बैरकपुर पुलिस आयुक्त को इस संबंध में जांच शुरू करने का निर्देश दिया।
श्मशान में व्यवस्था को लेकर उठे सवाल
मुख्यमंत्री ने घाटल क्षेत्र के नटागढ़ श्मशान घाट में हुई अंत्येष्टि की प्रक्रिया पर सवाल उठाए।
उनका दावा है कि उस दिन शवों की अंत्येष्टि की सूची में पीड़िता के शव का क्रम तीसरा था, लेकिन बाद में उसे बदलकर पहला कर दिया गया।
उन्होंने अंत्येष्टि से जुड़े दस्तावेजों और शुल्क जमा करने की प्रक्रिया को लेकर भी सवाल उठाए।
पीड़िता का पोस्टमार्टम 9 अगस्त 2024 को ही पूरा कर लिया गया था और उसी दिन शाम को शव का अंतिम संस्कार किया गया था।
अधिकारी ने कहा कि इन परिस्थितियों की अलग से जांच जरूरी है। हालांकि, आरजी कर मामले की मुख्य आपराधिक जांच अब भी CBI और न्यायिक निगरानी के दायरे में है।
मुख्यमंत्री ने तीन TMC नेताओं का लिया नाम
सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने अंत्येष्टि से जुड़े आरोपों के संदर्भ में पूर्व पानीहाटी विधायक निर्मल घोष, पानीहाटी नगरपालिका के पार्षद सोमनाथ डे और स्थानीय TMC नेता संजीब मुखर्जी के नाम लिए।
मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि यदि जांच में उनकी जिम्मेदारी सामने आती है तो उनके खिलाफ कार्रवाई होनी चाहिए।
हालांकि, तीनों नेताओं ने पहले इन आरोपों से इनकार किया है। उनका कहना रहा है कि घटना के बाद उन्होंने केवल सदमे में डूबे पीड़िता के माता-पिता की मदद करने की कोशिश की थी।
रविवार को उनसे दोबारा प्रतिक्रिया लेने के प्रयास किए गए, लेकिन संपर्क नहीं हो सका।
इसलिए अंत्येष्टि को लेकर लगाए गए आरोप अभी जांच का विषय हैं।
मां ने कहा- न्याय तक संघर्ष जारी रहेगा
स्मृति कार्यक्रम में पीड़िता की मां रत्ना देबनाथ भी मौजूद थीं। उन्होंने कहा कि परिवार अपनी बेटी के लिए न्याय मिलने तक पीछे नहीं हटेगा।
रत्ना देबनाथ ने कहा, “हम तब तक नहीं रुकेंगे, जब तक हमारी बेटी को न्याय नहीं मिल जाता।”
इस वर्ष हुए पश्चिम बंगाल विधानसभा चुनाव में वह भाजपा के टिकट पर पानीहाटी सीट से चुनाव लड़ी थीं और उन्होंने जीत दर्ज की थी। उनका मुकाबला पूर्व TMC विधायक निर्मल घोष के बेटे से हुआ था।
इस घटनाक्रम ने आरजी कर मामले को एक बार फिर राज्य की राजनीति के केंद्र में ला दिया है।
मुख्य मामले में दूसरी CBI जांच
अंत्येष्टि की नई पुलिस जांच ऐसे समय शुरू हो रही है जब मुख्य मामले में पहले ही एक और CBI जांच का आदेश दिया जा चुका है।
कलकत्ता हाईकोर्ट ने मामले की दोबारा जांच के लिए CBI की तीन सदस्यीय विशेष जांच टीम गठित करने का निर्देश दिया था। इस टीम की अगुवाई संयुक्त निदेशक स्तर के अधिकारी को सौंपी गई है।
पीड़िता के माता-पिता पहले की CBI जांच के परिणाम को लेकर कई बार असंतोष जता चुके हैं। पहली जांच में पुलिस की जांच के निष्कर्षों के अनुरूप ही एक मुख्य आरोपी, पूर्व कोलकाता पुलिस सिविक वालंटियर संजय रॉय, के खिलाफ मामला आगे बढ़ा और उसे उम्रकैद की सजा हुई।
हालांकि, परिवार का कहना रहा है कि उनकी बेटी की मौत से जुड़े सभी सवालों के जवाब अभी नहीं मिले हैं।
सुवेंदु अधिकारी ने भी माना कि परिवार CBI जांच से संतुष्ट नहीं है, लेकिन कहा कि मौजूदा जांच अदालत के आदेश के तहत चल रही है और सरकार को उसके निष्कर्षों की प्रतीक्षा करनी होगी।
अस्पतालों में दो मिनट का मौन
घटना की दूसरी बरसी पर पश्चिम बंगाल के सभी अस्पतालों में दो मिनट का मौन रखकर मृत डॉक्टर को श्रद्धांजलि दी गई।
दो साल बाद भी आरजी कर मामला जांच की दिशा, कथित प्रशासनिक चूक और घटना के बाद उठे कई सवालों के कारण सार्वजनिक चर्चा में बना हुआ है।
मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि सरकार न्याय सुनिश्चित करने के लिए प्रतिबद्ध है और भर्ती या संस्थागत प्रक्रियाओं में किसी भी प्रकार की गड़बड़ी के लिए जिम्मेदार पाए जाने वालों के खिलाफ कार्रवाई की जाएगी।
चुनावी राजनीति में भी प्रमुख मुद्दा रहा मामला
आरजी कर घटना पिछले दो वर्षों में केवल कानूनी और सामाजिक मुद्दा नहीं रही, बल्कि पश्चिम बंगाल की राजनीति का भी प्रमुख विषय बनी रही है।
2026 के विधानसभा चुनाव में भाजपा ने इस मामले को प्रमुखता से उठाया। पीड़िता की मां ने भी भाजपा के टिकट पर चुनाव लड़ा। प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी और केंद्रीय गृह मंत्री अमित शाह ने उनके समर्थन में प्रचार किया था।
राज्य में सत्ता परिवर्तन के बाद मुख्यमंत्री अधिकारी ने मई में पूर्व कोलकाता पुलिस आयुक्त विनीत गोयल तथा IPS अधिकारियों इंदिरा मुखर्जी और अभिषेक गुप्ता को मामले से निपटने में कथित लापरवाही और पीड़िता के माता-पिता के साथ धन की पेशकश से जुड़े आरोपों के आधार पर निलंबित किया था।
इन अधिकारियों के खिलाफ जांच के भी आदेश दिए गए।
अब शव की अंत्येष्टि को लेकर शुरू होने वाली जांच यह तय करेगी कि श्मशान की प्रक्रिया में वास्तव में कोई नियमविरुद्ध बदलाव हुआ था या नहीं, उसके लिए कौन जिम्मेदार था और क्या इसका 2024 की घटना की जांच पर कोई असर पड़ा।
