Sikkim Tunnel Collapse: Eight Dead, Around 20 Feared Trapped as Massive Rescue Operation Continues
Gangtok: A major rescue operation is underway in Sikkim after a landslide caused the collapse of an under-construction tunnel in Namchi district, leaving at least eight people dead and around 20 others feared trapped.
Persistent rainfall has continued to weaken the surrounding terrain, while suspected toxic gas inside the tunnel has made rescue efforts increasingly difficult, according to officials.
The accident took place inside the 7-kilometre-long tunnel being constructed for the Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project near Samardung.
At the time of the collapse, between 25 and 38 people—including senior officials of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and representatives of Patel Engineering, the company executing the project—were reportedly present inside the tunnel during a routine inspection.
Rescue personnel have so far managed to evacuate 12 people from the site. However, officials believe that 18 to 20 workers and officials remain trapped nearly three kilometres inside the collapsed tunnel, making the operation extremely complex and time-consuming.
A large-scale search and rescue mission has been launched with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim Police, the Fire and Emergency Services, and local volunteers working jointly at the site.
The difficult terrain, unstable ground, and hazardous conditions have also resulted in injuries to several rescue personnel engaged in the operation.
Reacting to the tragedy, Sikkim Chief Minister P. S. Tamang expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured that the state government was mobilising every available resource to support the rescue mission.
He appealed to the public to remain calm, refrain from spreading unverified information and stand in solidarity with the families affected by the disaster.
In his message of condolence, the Chief Minister said he was deeply distressed by the incident at the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey, in Namchi district.
He conveyed his heartfelt sympathies to the families of those who lost their lives and said the entire state stood with them during this period of immense grief.
Tamang also said he was personally monitoring the rescue operation and praised the courage, dedication and commitment of all emergency personnel working under extremely challenging circumstances.
He stated that instructions had been issued to all concerned departments to provide every possible assistance, accelerate rescue efforts and ensure that the highest safety standards were maintained throughout the operation.
According to the Chief Minister, the government remains fully committed to ensuring that the rescue mission reaches a safe and successful conclusion.
Expressing similar concern, Sikkim MP Indra Hang Subba described the incident as deeply distressing and said district authorities, disaster response teams and other emergency agencies were working in close coordination.
He offered prayers for those still trapped inside the tunnel and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
He also noted that the exact cause of the accident has not yet been established and would be determined after a detailed investigation.

गंगटोक: सिक्किम के नामची जिले में निर्माणाधीन सुरंग के धंस जाने से बड़ा हादसा हो गया, जिसमें अब तक आठ लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है, जबकि करीब 20 लोगों के अब भी सुरंग के भीतर फंसे होने की आशंका है।
लगातार हो रही भारी बारिश से पहाड़ी क्षेत्र की जमीन कमजोर होती जा रही है और राहत अभियान प्रभावित हो रहा है। वहीं सुरंग के भीतर संदिग्ध जहरीली गैस की मौजूदगी ने बचाव कार्य को और अधिक चुनौतीपूर्ण बना दिया है।
यह दुर्घटना समरदुंग के निकट तीस्ता स्टेज-6 जलविद्युत परियोजना की निर्माणाधीन सात किलोमीटर लंबी सुरंग में हुई। हादसे के समय सुरंग के भीतर 25 से 38 लोग मौजूद थे।
इनमें नेशनल हाइड्रोइलेक्ट्रिक पावर कॉरपोरेशन (एनएचपीसी) के वरिष्ठ अधिकारी और परियोजना का निर्माण कर रही पटेल इंजीनियरिंग कंपनी के प्रतिनिधि भी शामिल थे, जो नियमित निरीक्षण के लिए वहां पहुंचे थे।
राहत एवं बचाव दल अब तक 12 लोगों को सुरक्षित बाहर निकालने में सफल रहा है। हालांकि अधिकारियों का अनुमान है कि 18 से 20 लोग अभी भी सुरंग के भीतर लगभग तीन किलोमीटर अंदर फंसे हुए हैं, जिसके कारण बचाव अभियान बेहद जटिल और समय लेने वाला बन गया है।
घटनास्थल पर व्यापक स्तर पर बचाव अभियान चलाया जा रहा है। राष्ट्रीय आपदा मोचन बल (एनडीआरएफ), राज्य आपदा मोचन बल (एसडीआरएफ), सिक्किम पुलिस, अग्निशमन विभाग तथा स्थानीय स्वयंसेवक संयुक्त रूप से राहत कार्य में जुटे हैं।
खराब मौसम, अस्थिर पहाड़ी ढलान और जोखिमपूर्ण परिस्थितियों के कारण कई बचावकर्मी भी अभियान के दौरान घायल हुए हैं।
घटना पर गहरा शोक व्यक्त करते हुए सिक्किम के मुख्यमंत्री पी. एस. तमांग ने मृतकों के परिजनों के प्रति संवेदना प्रकट की और कहा कि राज्य सरकार राहत एवं बचाव अभियान के लिए उपलब्ध सभी संसाधनों का उपयोग कर रही है।
उन्होंने लोगों से अपील की कि वे शांत रहें, अपुष्ट खबरों पर विश्वास न करें और प्रभावित परिवारों के साथ एकजुटता बनाए रखें।
अपने शोक संदेश में मुख्यमंत्री ने कहा कि समरदुंग, झोलुंगे स्थित एनएचपीसी तीस्ता स्टेज-6 जलविद्युत परियोजना की निर्माणाधीन सुरंग में हुई यह दुर्घटना अत्यंत दुखद है।
उन्होंने मृतकों के परिवारों के प्रति गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त करते हुए कहा कि इस कठिन घड़ी में पूरा राज्य उनके साथ खड़ा है और उनकी पीड़ा में सहभागी है।
मुख्यमंत्री तमांग ने यह भी कहा कि वह स्वयं राहत एवं बचाव अभियान की लगातार निगरानी कर रहे हैं।
उन्होंने कठिन परिस्थितियों में कार्य कर रहे सभी बचावकर्मियों के साहस और समर्पण की सराहना की तथा संबंधित विभागों को निर्देश दिया कि हर संभव सहायता उपलब्ध कराई जाए, बचाव अभियान में तेजी लाई जाए और पूरे अभियान के दौरान सुरक्षा के सर्वोच्च मानकों का कड़ाई से पालन सुनिश्चित किया जाए।
उन्होंने भरोसा जताया कि सरकार सभी फंसे लोगों को सुरक्षित निकालने के लिए हरसंभव प्रयास कर रही है।
इस बीच सिक्किम के सांसद इंद्रा हांग सुब्बा ने भी हादसे पर गहरा दुख व्यक्त किया। उन्होंने कहा कि जिला प्रशासन, आपदा प्रबंधन एजेंसियां और अन्य आपातकालीन दल आपसी समन्वय के साथ राहत कार्य में जुटे हुए हैं।
उन्होंने सुरंग में फंसे लोगों की सुरक्षित वापसी की प्रार्थना करते हुए मृतकों के परिजनों के प्रति संवेदना व्यक्त की। सांसद ने यह भी कहा कि दुर्घटना के वास्तविक कारणों का अभी पता नहीं चल पाया है और विस्तृत जांच के बाद ही इसकी पुष्टि हो सकेगी।
